The story behind "The First Rebirth" by Franky Jones (Jones & Stephenson) | Muzikxpress 112

Franky Jones is an alias of Frank Sels, a DJ, producer and labelowner from Mechelen in Belgium. Frank is a well known name in the dance music industry for more than 35 years already. As a DJ he did perform in many famous clubs and at lots of major festivals, all around the world.
In 1993 Frank and David Brants a.k.a. Axel Stephenson teamed up for a project which they called Jones & Stephenson. The result of their first collab was the track “The First Rebirth”, which came out via Bonzai Records. And that one became a massive success in the rave scene back then. And even now, 27 years after the original release, the track is still as popular as ever.
During the years “The First Rebirth” got several re-releases with remixes from people such as Red Jerry, John 00 Fleming, Airwave, Danjo & Styles, Charlotte de Witte and a brand new remix from techno producer Reinier Zonneveld came out in June 2020.
I spoke to Franky about the story behind "The First Rebirth", his future plans and more!
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

This became such a classic in the hardcore scene. It happened on Mystery Land 1998. There was a big soccer match for the World Cup that day. Boris Valeo played the track and the people started to shout ‘Holland! Holland’ to support the football team. After that, at every major party The First Rebirth was played and the ‘Holland’ thing became a big thing. I remember at every rave, from Masters of Hardcore to Thunderdome, from Nightmare to Ghosttown, it was played and it always was a special moment.

  • @hanklewis6371

Franky, this tras was a masterpiece from the very first time: Clubs weren't ready at that time yet, most Dj's werent too, music policies didn't match ... but time has proven that everyone bends the knee on your creation. Speed was right, track structure too, synth patch "Rave Choir" from Korg M1 explains how many electronic instruments had to be used in a different way for this "different music styles". The First Rebirth will be remembered as one of the most brilliant and simple (in an good way) electronic music dance tune ever, and through the years you can see more and more attempts to bring all the splendor over the prejudices it had from the very beginning.

Bazen 😎

i was very lucky during the 90's to be at around 20-25 years of age. i was also lucky to have been able to go to "the big clubs" in belgium. not in size, but in name. cherry moon, la rocca, extreme, la bush, la goa, carat, bocaccio , bal moral, montini... ive been in all of these, and more! little did i know back then that i was actually living the history. i mean, when i talk about those days to younger people, they go crazy, and are so jealous that i was able to go to all these clubs during the best days of techno, trance, acid, whatever "genre" you want to put the music in. all i cared about was going out, have a blast, and listen to music. i didnt care about what kind of box this or that song belonged in. it was EDM, all of it. also, even today, "retro" parties, they just cant bring back the feeling, the spirit of back in those days, they just are not able to do it. all i know is that im happy and proud to have lived as a "youngster" back in those days, seeing the dj's at work that now have become legends!

After following you for well over a decade it seems now! I got a real feel for your tracks, even being a generation behind this scene. I LOVE IT. and so greatful i connected with all you guys in the past on Facebook to study your sounds. I can't remember which set i played first rebirth in or when i featured it. But Jones & Stephenson - The Third Rebirth (Cortex Thrill Mix) went amazingly well with World Inside The Music Featuring Dj Panda It's A Dream (Remix) kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZOK0qWckaTHk7A.html !!!!

Awesome interview Twan, I was really looking forward to it as The First Rebirth has been one of my favorite tracks since 1993!! For Bonzai style fans, check this one if you never did: M - Razzia 2 - Bonzai Mix (By Jones & Stephenson)

Trance, hardcore or whatever? People didn’t care about styles back then. Now everything has to be put in boxes. One more reason to say that 90’s were just magic!
