The Story Behind Shaq & Kobe

Спорт

It was one of the greatest and most bombastic partnerships in NBA history. The type of star-powered twosome that could rival the likes of Magic and Kareem or Jordan and Pippen. The duo of Shaq and Kobe were dominant beyond measure, yet still left something to be desired, including more championships on the table. The only things bigger than their successes together were their egos, and the divide between them.

    I think that they got the most out of that duo. After that 3rd championship it was time for a change. They actually stayed together 1 year longer than they should have. Phil, Shaq, and Kobe how those 3 egos fit together in the same room is a miracle alone.

    I think the main thing wasn't them both being alphas but the drastically different personalities both had when it came to basketball. After the first championship Shaq started getting a little lazy and got up and played when he wanted too. Kobe was all about hard work and working your ass off in practice and in the summer. It was more Shaq's fault then anything lol

    @@vizionaryentertainment8464 I agree. I think Shaq was relieved that he finally got his championships, and Kobe was obsessed with chasing MJ. The blame for the dysfunction is 50/50. With Phil siding more with Shaq because Phil wanted more short-term success.

    With Kobe it's not just about ego alone. The media narrative wanted that to be the topic. It's really about Shaq's laziness and ego. Imagine you threatening the team and coaching staff that you will not play defense if you don't always get the ball. Coming into camp out of shape. Like what the other comment here mentioned, he got complacent when he finally got his 1st championship because he's been burdened by it as it will destroy his legacy of being one of the greats.

    You know what's really interesting. Vlade Divac and Kobe would actually match up really well since Vlade was more of a passing center and didn't care for being a scorer. It would be just like the Kobe-Pau type of thing.

  • @Matt-cr4vv

    @Matt-cr4vv

    7 ай бұрын

    They wouldn’t have been anywhere close to as dominant with Kobe and Vlade over Shaq. And Vlade wouldn’t be the same as Pau. Being open to pass the ball is one thing but it’s important that the player is still a genuine offensive threat to score otherwise the opponent can just zero in on Kobe. A player leaning into passing is fine but they have to be enough of a threat to score to be the best duo. Pau was a scoring threat who averaged 18 points consistently to where he had to be kept in mind. Vlade the majority of his career averaged in the low double digits and wasn’t close to the offensive producer that either Shaq or Pau was. But neither Pau or Vlade at their best would hold a candle to the level of dominance Shaq was in the three peat. In the three years he averaged over 30 for the playoffs as a whole twice and 28 the third year. But when it came to the finals he was out of this world. Shaq averaged 38, 33 and 36 in those finals. He was so dominant those years his production just wasn’t replaceable and that’s why the conflict was so immense. Kobe was great too but how do you expect Shaq to not think it’s his team when he’s playing at the level he was? How do you tell the dude average mid 30 to nearly 40 in the finals that he isn’t the lead dog? You don’t.

    The “Showboat” nickname was given to Kobe by his teammate Byron Scott and used by many of the 1996-97 Lakers. In 2004 Karl Malone was a defensive specialist. He was injured in the Finals forcing the Lakers to start a Rookie Luke Walton against the Pistons best player, Rasheed Wallace. Walton was eaten alive by Wallace on offense and he was left open all series and missed so many shots that he became afraid to shoot. Shaq was double teamed by Ben and Rasheed Wallace all series and Kobe earned his “showboat” nickname by trying to MJ the Lakers to victory against the Jordan rules defense.

And when Shaq would have started slowing down in 07, that's when Kobe would have stepped up and took over the team. But they needed it because you have seen them have success without each other, and Kobe legacy is looked at differently with getting those two without Shaq and Shaq getting that one without Kobe. Magic can't say he didn't get one without Karrem Michael. Jordan can't say I didn't get one without Scottie. But Shaq and Kobe can say that

    @Jdjd Ndj “the Colorado incident.” A girl slept with three dudes in one night, Kobe being only the second, then claimed the one who was rich and famous raped her. Same girl got put in drug rehab by her family.

    The Miami Heat are responsible in one way or another for causing all of this chaos. By trading for Alonzo Mourning and attempting to trade for Juwan Howard. The Hornets were the mark. They got flossed SO BADLY. BADLY. Like school bullies taking lunch money from a smallchild. Jerrry West took advantage of the mayhem to get what he wanted. Smart man. Meanwhile the Heat would eventually benefit from the ripple affect YEARS later. A good portion of the players involved in these scenarios would end up on the Heat at some point between 2006 and 2013 and that would result in 3 Championships for the Heat. And 3 for the Lakers. Crazy. And almost all of them played with Shaq atleast for a season or 2.. Wait a minute. Pat Riley and Jerry West...didn't they play on the Lakers together or something?

    To be honest I blame shaq for his ego for the dynasty break up, he should have been more of a leader / mentor but his ego got the best of him, I look at how David Robinson took a back seat to Tim Duncan for the spurs to be successful and how when shaq was traded to Miami he willing took a back seat to Dwade, why couldn't he have done that in LA with kobe? Jealousy comes to mind when you look back, kobe was younger more athletic, skilled and gifted with creativity and had a better relationship with Dr. Buss, that's probably why Buss traded shaq which was the right thing to do because shaq was aging plus dealing with constant injuries, shaq later admitted he could have taken less money to stay in LA as a lakers fan this really is disappointing. Egos always ruin everything 😒

    Robinson didn't take a back seat by choice, Duncan was already better than him coming into the league. Robinson had injured his back and foot and was never the same.

    With all due respect, you can't compare Shaq/Kobe to Shaq/Wade in relation to Robinson/Duncan. There are many aspects that you have to consider when speaking about those three duo's. All had different personalities and different times in careers when each other affected one anothers..but I will say the only aspect you got right was the ego's Shaq and Kobe had in their time with the Lakers together.

    It's still unbelievable that the stinking "Orlando Magic" franchise thought a rookie Superstar who took them to the finals in only his 3rd year was not worth all that money. I mean if it were some big market annual contender then we'd understand, but the Magic ??? Orlando ??? 😂😂 I guess they've won like 5 Championships we don't know about since then, clowns. 🤣
