The story behind "Ayla - Ayla" by Ingo Kunzi | Muzikxpress 216

Ayla is a project from German DJ and producer Ingo Kunzi. The most well-known Ayla track is for sure the debut track, which is called “Ayla” as well. The original version of the track already came out back in the year 1996.
During the years the track has been remixed by names such as Veracocha, The Space Brothers, Hole In One, Pronti & Kalmani and of course, every trance fan knows the famous DJ Taucher remix.
“Ayla” has not only been a popular track in the clubs and at festivals, it was also used in the movie "Kevin & Perry Go Large", plus in 1999 the Veracocha remix of “Ayla” was used in a TV commercial for McDonalds!
For this week’s vlog I sat down with Ingo Kunzi in his beautiful studio, to ask him about the story behind “Ayla” and more.
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

What a nice fella, seems extremely humble and grounded. On a personal level, Ayla was the track that really kickstarted my love affair with trance, I was always listening to trance during the 90's, but that track smashed the ceiling for me and allowed all the other great artists to come flooding through. Ayla is a seminal track, Ayla is a classic track, Ayla is one of the very best from that era of music. Ingo should be very proud to have produced such a gem.

I remember been at a rave at the Electric Workshop in Johannesburg in 1996 with a head full of Amsterdam`s finest pills, 15 000 or so people all around me and on the same vibe and this track dropping for the first time...the place melted, then erupted in whoops and hollars...what a time to be alive and young that was!

So many great tunes from back in the mid to late 1990's. The best year I ever had was 1998 - so many, many positive things happening in my life that year. Summer was just crazy. The tunes upto then though, Cafe Del Mar, Wizards of the Sonic (Westbam remix), 1998 (Matt Darey Remix).... just far too many to list but I tell you, London was alive and electric back then.

Its incredible how the DJ Taucher remix differs to the original. That's what I loved about remixes in the 90s. So many people when remixing tracks would take it in such a different direction or completely revamp the original, by taking a small sample and doing so much with it. I suppose you still get that today at times. I just hate when many trance producers take an uplifting trance track and make a very similar uplifting trance remix. Such a waste of opportunity to do something unique.

@@muzikxpress in some releases the Taucher one is sold as the "Original Taucher mix", so it could happen. I'll admit that I hadn't listened to the Tandu & Fact original version before watching this video and I really liked it. A product of its era, faster tempo, stronger bassline, some acid here and there and the mighty piano which was so popular back then. Darker melody which is a plus (at least for me). In '98 the trend was changing to the uplifting magic most of us enjoyed.

The original is very atmospheric and beautiful, but less catchy and less radio friendly than the Taucher mix. I like both versions, difficult to really compare them but if I had to choose, I'd say the original. The Kosmonova version released only one year later sounds very similar to the original Taucher mix, and Taucher did a "Taucher 97 Remix" of that which again isn't a great deal different.

@@lukasmidub I’m not looking for suggestions or doing requests at the moment, sorry. I have over 10 interviews to edit and post still, plus like 5 I need to prepare and record still. There’s over 100 tracks that are on my wish list still too, so ideas enough 😉 My main issue is time and budget. I simply don’t have a travel budget for these interviews. The ones with Ingo and Dag took a lot of planning and I could only make those happen after some donations from viewers. Unfortunately there’s not really a lot of advertising money on KZread if you don’t have millions of views. Thanks for your understanding!

Because this interview wasn’t about “Ayla Part 2”, but about “Ayla” 😉 FYI, I did a total of 4 (!!!)interviews with Ingo that day, there wasn’t unlimited time, so I did focus on the (in my opinion) most important questions.

The story behind Ayla Part II would indeed be exiting to hear. Part II was written and produced by the trio Ingo Kunzi (DJ Tandu/Ayla), Torsten Stenzel (YORK) and Ralph-Armand Beck (Taucher). To my knowledge Ayla Part II was created because of the great success of the original Ayla and of course the Taucher Remix.

Thanks a lot! And I would love that, but I simply don't have time and budget for foreign trips anymore this year. After my German trip and the trip to Zandvoort/Amsterdam last weekend (lots of new interviews will be posted in the next few months!), I have to save again for a new possible trip abroad. Charlie lives in / near London, but that's out of my budget unfortunately. Hopefully we can make it happen one day (if he's up for it), but for now I have to focus on artists / producers who live nearby (south of The Netherlands), or people who visit for gigs etc. Hopefully one day I can actually make a decent amount of money with Muzikxpress, so I can do more interviews abroad. Fingers crossed!

That's one of the 100+ tracks that is on my wish-list for an interview ;-) Hopefully I can make it happen one day, but please keep in mind I don't have a budget for these interviews. The ones with Ingo (and DJ Dag) were made thanks to donations I got some months ago. I wish I would make some good money on advertising here on KZread, but you need millions of views in order to do all of that. So, hopefully one day..... If you enjoy my interviews and you want to support Muzikxpress, you can do that via one of the links in the video's :)
