I first heard this song on a compilation cassette from my girlfriend in 1989, being from Manchester I couldn't believe how good they sounded with the jangle guitars and songs full of swagger. Unreal memories

You mean as opposed to all of the other English areas that produced other fantastic legendary bands too? London perhaps .. its not so much Manchester mate as the whole of England..our beautiful little country gave birth to the greatest bands of all time ..stones ,beatles ,floyd ,sabbath, maiden ,cream and Eric Clapton. The mighty led zep ,pistols ,the jam , Smith's and morrisey .Elton John (early stuff) queen ..I am going to stop before I go on all day lol ..musically us English were gifted ..England is tiny but damn if we didn't rule the musical world ..now its shit tho .

Reni's backing vocals on this are off the scale. Beatles (here comes the sun), beach boys harmonies. I'm incapable of loving this song anymore. This song gives me a euphoric buzz 30 odd year after the first time I heard it.

Love this - thanks. It's great to have lyrics. When I listen, I hear "you see in this heat, river cools where I belong" though. And if you listen to the demo version - another section of the chorus sounds like "I want to creep, where the drownings are".

Yes technically correct, Ian Brown wrote it about neither the Mersey in Liverpool or Manchester but about its flow through his hometown of Warrington

I suspect the person who put this official video up is copying the wrong lyrics posted on the internet. Sounds nothing like "where the drownings are" to me. It's "song" to rhyme with "belong".
