The "Stock Improved" ECU From 550Performance - Is It Worth It For The CRF300L / Rally?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I got a great deal on a second-hand ECU from 550Performance. It was their "Stage 1 91 Octane" map, which requires an after-market exhaust that I don't have. The re-mapped it to their "Stock Improved 91 Octane" version for me at no cost, other than shipping. I wanted to make a more objective video, comparing it to the stock ECU, but unfortunately the majority of this is just subjective, seat-of-your-pants opinion.
Here's a link to 550Perfomance where you can see the details on all of their different ECU options for the 300L:

    I'm glad you mentioned the entire reason I bought the 550, which was shutting off the throttle. It 100% has to do with the way I ride (slow) in low gears. With the stock ECU, closing the throttle felt like I was hitting the brakes. The 550 doesn't make it perfect, but it was a huge improvement. For me, that single issue made it worth the cost. I went with the improved Stock 87, and I'm happy with it. It's possible I might change the exhaust in the future, but for now I also like the quieter running of the stock one.

    I wish I could have figured out a way to measure the difference of that more accurately, but it’s certainly noticeable. Sounds like we’re in the same boat regarding a different exhaust. Love the low volume of stock, but I’m not ruling out a different one in the future - especially after feeling the extra kick of my buddy’s who went with the MotoX.

    @@HighDesertHills I'm not sure of any good way to measure it. I can feel it, and I know I like the new ECU better because it cut down what I feel was too much engine braking at low speed... but it is hard to quantify. As for the other part, I'm finding the 300L to be peppy enough with the stock exhaust. But because it is new for me, I haven't had a chance to really get it on bigger trails (winter!). I'm planning on judging it again in about 4 months to find out if more "kick" would be useful or wasted on me.

    Great video! Despite the performance gains available from a free flowing aftermarket exhaust, I agree with you on keeping the stock exhaust. When I had my XT225 I installed a FMF with quiet insert. It sounded awesome at start-up, idle, and when blipping the throttle, but longer runs down the road got really irritating. There are performance gains to be had with the aftermarket exhaust, but not enough of a gain to justify an irritating sound when cruising. I plan to stay stock on my 300L. I did do the Thai ECU, and my brain tells me the bike runs smoother, but that is all seat of the pants performance measurements. Separately, I live in North Phoenix but my in-laws live in Sandy. I get out to your area frequently, and often I bring my 300L in my truck. Your friend Justin and I went riding together in American Fork Canyon when these bikes were first released. I need to reconnect with Justin and would like to connect with you for a ride. Currently I don’t have any plans to be in your area, but that can change.

    I also got the 91 octane stock improved ECU. Your experience with the new ECU was the same with me. I was expecting more from it but it's minimal. The most notice difference was when cruising around 50 mph it will pull to 70 mph quicker. My mpg went from averaging 72 to 64 mpg. I kept the original ECU and thought about switching back but the that small improvement with being able to get around traffic quicker on the highway is worth it to me.

    It’s a little early to tell for sure, but I think I’ll keep this one over stock. It’s minor, but noticeable. I’m tempted to rig up sim sort of removable cover plastic on the front of the bike so I can get to the ECU without having to remove all the plastics and crash guards. It’s be cool to swap back and forth based on that I’m doing.

    My 300l came with the 550 stage 1 ECU and a loud black widow exhaust, I bought a silent kit from the wings exhaust that they make for the 2019 and up 690/701 and got much quieter, but not exactly where I would like, so the other day I installed the wings exhaust with the silent kit that I have on my 690, and that sounded just perfect, it gave the bike a deeper and plesent sound, so thinking about ordering another wings exhaust for the 300l

    12:30 that's the reason I've purchased two 91 octane stock modified ECUs for our two bikes (they are in transit). Yes, it's not that "on the gas" is the problem, it's the small counter-rotation of the throttle just cuts the guts out of the power. Closing the throttle felt like the front brake going on. My wife says the same. I can see from your tacho it's taking a lot longer to fall away than I'm used to seeing. 13:17 yes, you're right, it's that important to some of us, and I'll be happy once they're installed. We do a lot of low-speed riding and training (under 15km/h or 10mph) and this improvement will be worth it. Our bikes are otherwise mechanically stock. The temperature issue. We are about to go into our summer. Temps in the shade are usually 35-45oC (95-113oF). I'll see if this ECU makes any difference. Also, I'll keep an eye on the fuel use for both bikes before and after and see how it goes. Great video. Cheers, from Australia.

  • @HighDesertHills

    @HighDesertHills

    Best of luck with it! Now that I've been through a summer with it, it's hard to say whether it affected the exhaust temp. If it did, it's subtle. It doesn't really bother me since I started wearing MX boots, but I think the "real" solution for the heat would have to be an open pipe, without a cat.

    Interesting about the fuel choices you have in your area, in my area (Ontario, Canada) the 87 has ethanol and there is no such thing as " ethanol free 87" but all the 91 is ethanol free, so we have to buy the 91 for our small engines and anything with carburetors

  • @HighDesertHills

    That makes more sense to me, that the highest performance fuel would also be ethanol free. I’ve thought about using an octane booster in the 87 octane ethanol free, but I don’t know if those really work. For now, I’ll just make sure to ride through my gas often 🙂

    You’ll get pre-ignitions. Basically the gas will explode before it’s supposed to so the timing will be off and it will leach the power away. It also causes engine knocks. Realistically, it would probably be fine in a pinch here and there, but long term it could jack up your engine pretty badly.

    The CBR300R is 30.5hp 27N-m stock. If Maverick Klotz of 550 perf uses the base map of that CBR300R ECU, that's good. If it's a homebrew map. buyer beware. The stock CRF300L/Rally ECU mapping was dumbed down to only 26.9hp 26.6N-m, just like the CRF250L was dumbed down to only 23hp from the 26hp CBR250R spec. 30.5 hp /289cc = 106.6hp/litre displacement.
