The Stereo Shop__Turntable Calibration 2

Ойын-сауық

How to balance, a dynamically balanced tone arm, using a Dual 505 turntable with an Ortofon OM-10 phono cartridge. The tonearm features a 4 point bearing, a counter weight, and a precision calibrated spring at the the pivot point, to add the downward force (weight). Check out my other video to learn how to calibrate a statically balanced arm. The Stereo Shop, Hartford CT.

    I would have never expected that the record would play changing the angle of the turntable like that what a surprise that was. Very good video very good with setting up the weight on the stylus.

    I remember back in the 70s Dual would have a display on their trade show booths, with a playing turntable that was mounted inside a big gimball device that would slowly spin it around and even turn it completely upside down (the mat and record were glued to the platter so they didn't fall off).

    So glad I came across this video. Left my turntable in to get serviced and new cartridge fitted. Ended up setting the pitch myself as it was running slow and the anti-skate and needle weight was way too light. Now records that had really bad sibilance as the arm tracked towards center are playing great. Thanks again!

    You can balance the arm in ether location, I find it easier to do it over the platter so I can see the arm better. It should be level. Usually when I do it near the arm rest, the cueing gets in the way. By bring the arm over the platter lets you lower the cue so it doesn't interfere with the balancing of the arm.

    When checking the cartridge with the scales do it without the mat. Usually it's best to run it under bias not over? Your bias might be out or not on a level surface, check it on a CD to see if it stays in one position while the CD is turning, all skating should be adjusting by ear with headphones to define the perfect balance

    By using a spring to provide the Tracking Force it will allow the Turntable to be completely inverted, and if the record and platter are secure, it will play the record. In the late 60s, or early 70s, Dual did demonstrate that. Some other brands of Turntables, would just use the counterweight to unbalance the Tonearm, providing the Tracking pressure

    Hello to thestereoshop I 've been balancing tonearms since the late 70's but boy I had the hardest time with a Dual 1225 tone arm the tone arm is very lite just like my old Onkyo CP-1055FII but this one was the hardest I ever had I could not balance it I'd tweek the counter weight just slightly it would go down I tweek it up it would go up I could not balance it even I checked on the tone arm to see if there was any play ,no play the I checked to see if the screws that help keep the tone in place where bearings are it was fine could it be the head shell was light ,this turntable was barely used it was in original box the dust cover had very small minor scratches the wood base was pristine the head shell looked new even the conectors for the cartridge looked new ??????? for two days I played with it so I got some very small o rings and found a little space inside og headshell I put in 2 o rings I was desperate never encountered this EVER!!!! so I tried it finally I got the tone arm to balance don't know if this was thr fight remedy but I got tone to balanes even set tracking force to 1.75 grams checked it with scale off my half a gfam played a few albums no problems maybe head shell was too lite?????can't explain I had a another 1225 TT but it balanced perfectly took me 5 seconds to balance but this one almost defeated me but I think I solved it what would you do????? I noticed that one of the three black screws that holds the chassi, the back one, was missing. Does this affect any of the TT operation or is important only for preparing the TT for transport? It was actually during a transport that that specific screw jumped out and got bented.

I think my anti-skating isn't working as it should be, ie when I turn the anti-skating dial I think it may not apply the correct amount of anti-skating. Thank you for this video. Now I can understand how the weight works a little better. I need your help. I know that my tonearm is very light. Some records start skipping when they reach the last grooves although they are brand new (not even mint condition). I was also told I could fix that myself by the guy who brought me my new stylus but I don't know how (or I'm scared) to do it. Here is my question: is there a common way to do this? I don't know my stylus' brand and I'm really scared to damage my tonearm and my stylus altogether. Thanks in advance!

    The other problem I have is that my turntable has a belt-drive system.

  • @thestereoshop

    @thestereoshop

    8 жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure make or model your turntable is, but if it has auto shutoff or auto return and if it is skipping towards the end of the record, this may be the cause. There is a a leaver under the platter that when the tone arm starts to come to the end of the record the tone arm makes contact with as it and starts to move it inward as it gets closer to the last groves of the record (end). When it moves in far enough to the platter it trips and the auto shut of is started. Over time the lubricants get thicker and it doesn't move as freely as it once did, so added friction is added and the records skips. This leaver mechanism needs to be disassembled cleaned and re lubricated very lightly with silicone or a drop of very light machine oil. you may want a professional to do the job unless you are mechanically inclined. Hope this explains what is actually happening.

    Thank you! It's perfectly clear. Mine is a Noblex music center (MC 538). As I'm not into mechanics, I let somebody else repair it some months ago. I was told everything was fine but that the tonearm was a little bit light. Maybe this person didn't take care of this lever under the platter and that is what is giving me a hard time, just like you told me. Thank you again. I hope I can have it repaired soon.

    Can I ask? On this exact model turntable, what is the process to replace the RCA cables, which are hard-wired into the inside of the turntable? I have this model and it seems the RCAs are pretty much shot, and tend to bring up a hum or various noises almost every time i play it. If i wiggle the RCAs i can get it "back" for a while, then it goes out again. Thanks, your video has been fantastic.

    While this table can play even while upright, IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO THIS. This can only be done with DYNAMICALLY balanced arms. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT try this with a table that has a STATICALLY balanced arm....very high risk of damage to stylus and record.
