The Steam Deck has changed gaming

Ойындар

So I've been playing a lot of games on the Steam Deck lately and surprise surprise, I love it!
It's a versatile little machine for playing all the games in my steam library.
I've found in my day to day it's hard to sit down and play some games at my PC, whereas the steam deck has allowed me to play games both portable and on the TV.
I've covered things purely from a gaming perspective but I haven't even mentioned the desktop mode that lets you use it like a PC.
But yeah if you're considering getting a steam deck, I'd recommend it.

SteamOS has better compatibility with older games than Windows 11. I wasn't expecting that. Steam Deck has become my main device for blasting through my backlog of games. I don't need to install a community patch just to launch Fallout 3? What a dream.

Strangely, but very welcome, running many older Windows games on Linux via Proton often works better than running them on modern Windows.

It's often glossed over, but I can't stress enough how awesome it is that the Steam Deck is finally succeeding at pushing Linux gaming into the mainstream. Proton got this far on their own, and the maintainers of that project deserve so much of the credit. But it's the Steam Deck that's the much needed push for game developers to take Linux seriously and at least make a little effort to play nice with Proton and Linux. Valve has absolutely earned their effective monopoly by just plain being better and treating customers well, but Microsoft absolutely hasn't, and is in fact headed in completely the wrong direction with Windows 11 on that front. Even if most people are staying on Windows for the time being, just securing Linux as a truly viable option is such an extremely good thing for PC gaming and shouldn't be overlooked.

It depends on who you ask, I guess, as I’ve seen comments from die-hard Linux users who’ve decried Valve for ruining native Linux support for video games. I’m unsure why this is, as I don’t use Linux, but it had something to do with that proton layer you mentioned - emulation vs. true support, that kind of thing.

The steam deck was everything I was looking for in a handheld. I can actually relax and enjoy a gaming sesh without having to sit in front of the TV or in front of my PC. I’ve been checking out games I don’t normally play on PC or Xbox One X, which has exposed me to so many unique indie games. I’m actually quite happy it’s taken me a way from the competitive games, I can actually game for the sake of gaming. Bought 5 games on sale for the $40x, it’s wild!

@@mickred04 there are so many games! Just last week I bought 5 games (Chorus, Batman collection, metro exodus, The Ascent, and Severed Steel) all for around $45! It’ll give you a reason to try games you don’t usually play. Only thing is, you’ll have to fine tune the controls to your liking. There are plenty of community templates, but you’ll have to adjust the to fit your play style. Don’t sleep on the gyro! Get one, you won’t regret it. One thing that may help if you want to look up games on steam is they have a compatibility section on if the game works right away or if it needs a little work to get running on the deck. I've just played through most of Halo:MCC and that ran fine, I haven't played any COD on the deck though so I'm not sure how well those games work

I have my own steam deck (got it for my birthday) because i thought it would be cool, plus i dont have much room for a pc or laptop, and man is it great, the freedom to bind anything to any key makes it feel so free for games to be comfortable to play, the back buttons can aid in extra functionality, and emalation is pretty easy with emudeck, means i can finally play games ive never really experienced, overall, i like the steam deck, and its some of the best pc gaming ive ever experienced (which is a low bar, my old laptop could barely run... anything)

Ive been a member of steam for..holy heck, probably since almost the beginning. Being a gamer since 1980, I love the Atari 2600, old school arcade games, NES, SNES, Sega master system, Genesis, TG16, PS1, PS2 (probably my fav system of all time), Dreamcast, XBOX, and XBOX 360 (second favorite system of all time). I have been a PC gamer since before the original Unreal Tournament. The Steam deck and Windows consoles most definitely changed the PC gaming industry. I personally own an OLED Steam deck and love it. I can see the console quality of it. The next sequel to the steam deck is a curious tech wonder.

Now if only it was available everywhere! But no it's only available in The United States, Europe, the UK and Asia. Everywhere else in the world good luck even if they're territories of places it's already available in. It's good that competitors have been able to take advantage of this but they usually come with Windows which is not suitable for handheld gaming so we have to install a third-party OS to make it like a Steam Deck. The only recently announced alternative that sounds interesting is the upcoming Orange Pi Neo which will come pre-installed with Manjaro Linux gaming edition instead of Windows 11.

@@SackyIRE Thanks but I already did that and bought the Lenovo Legion Go and installed Bazzite OS on it and it works fantastic especially with the extra power it has over the steam deck. Nintendo does not care about power. That was the whole point Nintendo made YEARS ago. When you chase power and graphics you reach a point where games cost too much to make and the difference isnt that great. And we are seeing that now with Sony and Xbox. Nintendo care more about the experience of playing and what they can do that changes things drastically. Less power means easier to make games that focus on gameplay. Shorter dev time, more profits. Nintendo doesnt even need to compete because its not in the death race Sony and Xbox is with all they can do now is buy IPs, not fund them and distroy the very companies that made games for their consoles.

  • @SackyIRE

That is very true, Nintendo have never fought back with power and they definitely have their own strategy on IPs that works for them, but I still wouldn't be surprised to see the steam deck eat into future Nintendo console sales given the sheer volume of games on the steam deck plus the emulation capabilities it has
