This one takes a look at Trackmania 2020-a game I described last year as having all the potential to be the most successful racing game on the planet, that unfortunately keeps bumping up against some truly baffling business decisions. One year on, and the way this game has evolved has only complicated my views on it.

    Just want to mention that some of the "obstacle spam" might have been due to camera mode. It looks like you're using "Cam 1" in general, but several of the campaign maps were designed for "Cam 2" or "Cam 3".

  • @01Colorwise

    @01Colorwise

    2 жыл бұрын

    The default camera is absolutely necessary for ice but I prefer the first person view for most courses because it doesn't fight against the terrain. The "obstacle spam" disappears as soon as you get comfortable with each map and get a feel for the fastest lines you can take in each segment since the bumpers and pillars aren't obstructing those lines. I'm not sure if I should complain about the map design for not working well with the default camera, forcing people to either go in blind to some downhill sections, or the game for not teaching people to get comfortable with switching views. I've had a good time playing this year's campaign tracks, especially the latest season, and I enjoy setting up personal goals and seeing how much I improve as a driver. I've never felt like the maps were unfair and I've acknowledged that the mistakes I make are from my own decisions on taking bad lines or hesitating on turns and drifts.

    One of the most damning things about TM2020 is the fact that the free version of the game, which is supposed to hook in new players, is devoid of the iconic features that hooked players into the series to begin with - and only has the poorly-designed monthly campaign maps to act as a replacement, thus giving free players no insight into the power of the paid-access tools and therefore giving them no reason to buy in. Speaking personally, even as someone who has sunk hundreds of hours into the previous Trackmania games, TM2020 has failed to hook me or make me feel compelled to buy in.

    @@RR-hl6zi Trackmania Nations is still 100% free and still an excellent game, with an absolutely gargantuan amount of fan-made content to peruse. It's definitely the best place for a newcomer to start, as far as I'm aware. Trackmania United includes everything already in Nations alongside all six of the other Environments (car/tileset combos) from the two previous Trackmania games. It's a one-time purchase and it usually goes on sale for pennies. Trackmania 2 requires you to purchase all four of it's Environments individually, but they're all one-time purchases. Just be warned that the Trackmania 2 version of the Stadium Environment is an upgraded version of the Stadium Environment that's already available for free in Trackmania Nations, so it may not be worth the money to you. Additionally, while this isn't directly related to your question, I will nonetheless advise steering clear of Trackmania Turbo - it comes with all four of Trackmania 2's Environments in one purchase, but they're all **extremely** watered-down, and they've had a very cringe-inducing "EXTREME SPORTS" aesthetic haphazardly slapped onto them.

    Trackmania's one of the best games let down by how dumb the company itself was honestly. I truly do feel like if they just let you buy these games with no strings attached, no DRM and better interface that they would do much better than they do now and have more of a place in the public eye. As it stands, I can't help but feel that all the ways Ubisoft try to control it only really serve to push people away even though they truly have a real gem in their hands. I know I can't be the only one that constantly wishes this game were in better hands at the very least.

    Personally I get the most fun out of the Track/Cup of the Day system with this game. It keeps getting me back to check out the new track, compete in the cup and then hunt the map for a bit. The thing I think the game needs the most is a proper achievement/unlock system, for example unlock a badge or skin for a cup of the day win, with higher tiers depending on the division, etc... There would be so much possibilities ... that probably would make me play the game even more. And no, the trophy system does not fill that gap, as you can do absolutely nothing with them.

    I actually rewatched your other trackmania video this week as the game has been on my mind since the release of royal. Your message of “this game should be the biggest racing game” just sticks with me as I continue to play Super Smash Bros melee, another game I adore for its mechanical purity. I’ve played trackmania since 2007. I talk about it a lot to people, and I don’t think I ever convinced a single person to pick up and play the game. Powerful creation tools, simple but deep gameplay mechanics, and an art style I think really matches its mechanical simplicity is just constantly let down by a developer which over the last couple of years has revealed to be a bit toxic. I don’t know what the Nadeo team can do to relaunch trackmania and become that biggest game, but god I want them to succeed the right way so much.

  • @osaka199

    The main issue I have with the paying model and the reason this is the only trackmania game I haven't thrown my money at is that they're asking for a yearly fee for access to stuff that Nadeo really isn't making. They're literally monetizing user generated content. They'll argue that it's to keep the servers up but 1: dog food ads and 2: online gamemodes, at least royal and ranked, _are free for everyone_. The money gives you access to your locally downloaded tracks and user game rooms and campaigns, ie user content. It's scummy and scammy to incredible lengths, and as the game goes on it just grows more so. Sure, it's not an exhorbitant fee but as someone who spent 5 digit hours in the various trackmania editors over the last 15 years, I don't want my creative output to be monetized by Ubisoft Entertainment SarL.

Apparently purists don't like it so much because the physics is a little different and the only seems to be quite dead, but it has 4 environments. Didn't mention nadeo bringing in community members in for designing the last 2 campaigns either, the same is true for the e-sport side of things (which is also fairly important). Also confused about how it was difficult for you to find matchmaking players - takes less than a minute on lower to mid skill levels generally.

    I've recently read a bit into the history of Nadeo (the developers), and apparently they've been making nonsensical decisions and frustrating everyone around them since they first appeared. From the ground up, their games are always weird - even things like UI being alien compared to almost every other game. Hell, Trackmania 2020 has UX design elements that more resemble an early 2000s MMORPG than a 2020 racing game. On top of that, why is Ranked mode in a racing game team based? I know that's how Pros play the game... but it makes no bloody sense why you would need to deal with underperforming players dragging you down in an online racing game. Oh and also... since the first days of release I still can't believe anyone thought the "cup" / point accumulation system was a good idea. Just remove it now that you have a ranked ladder for fuck sake. Your ideas aren't working, they never worked. Your games always went by on the driving, track design and community content. The absolute narcissism apparent in the history of Nadeo is confusing.

    What I hate about the business model of TM is not really so much to pay 9.99 per year, which is really honest given the content available ( although you are basically paying Nadeo for content they are not making ...) but rather why they did it. Let's be honest, Trackmania used to be kind of a niche game. Then, came Zerator and his Trackmania Cups. It brought A LOT of players in the game. But for only like 2 months per year. That meant that these players just had to pay for the game and then come back every year for the new itteration of the cup without giving any more money. And with TM 2020, they found a workaround : the subscription. Players who play the game on a regular basis don't care because it's cheap, and players only playing for a few month during ZT cups have to basically pay 9.99 every year to attend the event...

    I just can't justify buying or playing ubisoft games, especially if they're going to get revenue out of me with ads anyway. I'll stick with the trackmania I already own.

    Unpopular opinion here, the subscription talk is quite old already, and they use it to make sure they can keep and update the game instead of dumping it after a few years, that should be a good thing. Also, it's less than 1$ a month, not saying it's nothing obviously, but I think it's something people need to know. Cheers, an actual happy game hunter

    The timing of this comment means that even if you clicked Reply immediately as I hit Publish, you could have only watched a maximum of two minutes of the video. Either way, I very much understand the notion of needing subscriptions/ads to keep the lights on (I say as much in the video). I also enjoy the game a great deal. My argument was more to do with whether I personally would consider the subscription worthwhile based on my own experience with the game's progress over the last year-I don't claim to speak for the community, which I'm not a part of (outside of enjoying the multiplayer and cool creations people come up with).
