I no longer visit retail stores regularly because the items don’t make me giddy anymore. A good vintage show or store is what makes my adrenaline activate. Finding things that I’ve wanted since the 80’s or 90’s is my goal now. Style is personal, fashion is a business. I make it my business to personally be fashionable ✨🤸🏾✨

Yes, I can totally relate to the thrill that high quality vintage clothing provides! When I was young I craved new retail items, now I'm the opposite. I'm so bored in retail stores now. My unique style gets daily compliments from so many demographics. I've found perfect authentic vintage Versace top & Gucci bag for $6!! Thrifting is Life.

Hey!! I paused to answer the “What is fashion” question …. My simple answer is basically Fashion is what’s already provided, and Style is what you do with what’s provided! Clothes already existed before we were on the planet but as the century’s rolled along, styles evolved.

I strongly believe that fashion is an art genre just as paintings, poetry, singing , and performing are. The creator creates it and the consumers buys the art and uses it to express him or herself. However when the fashion designer is not inspired, the consumer cannot be inspired to style. There is a symbiotic relationship between the designer and the consumer because many consumers are also artist and they use their bodies as the canvas for the designer. Curious to hear your commentary.

I would also like to challenge people to actually try to make something. I swear once i started sewing that made me think of clothing and construction DIFFERENTLY. That also led me to shop differently, if at all if we’re being honest (people really don’t CONSTRUCT clothes like they used to). My appreciation increased immensely. People please look into small businesses and makers. It’s not easy to make something from scratch and present it to the world, especially a world where people will give their money to bigger brands and be extremely resistant with smaller makers. Great video Kia! A much needed conversation I know i could go on for days about. Thank you for doing the research and sharing your perspective. ❤

Thank you, thanks for watching and your comment. Thrifting taught me a lot about fabrics and the quality of clothing but sewing really showed me the about of time and patience goes into the construction of clothing. Today mostly everything you see is massed produced. This just inspired a video idea, thank you!

As a woman 50+ I remember being able to go to clothing stores and find my style because there was such a variety of style choices to choose from; designer brands. High and street fashion. Which is probably why when you thrift, you can find such a varity of interesting pieces. Now everyone looks like a clone. No matter the age, height, clothing size or body frame...In my opinion one style does not compliment everyone. It also, as mentioned, within reason, begins to steal your individuality. Who you are, who GOD created you to be as an individual. Your personality which is connected to your personal style. Whenever I watch nature I am reminded of how creative our CREATOR is. Nothing looks alike even if it's connected to a similar species. And yet everything serves an individual purpose. Be it animal, insect, vegetation, or flower. The sun, the moon and stars. Everything intricately thought out, detailed and designed suitably for the survival of and betterment of the whole. Still, there are new things being discovered or have yet to be discovered. Thanks for sharing ❤ 👍 😊

A lil late but I really miss a lot of folks originality. Growing up in Brooklyn style in the neighborhood was the hustlers, corner boys, the church ladies on Sunday and Saturday nite😂, or the fly hip sista that all the young dudes drooled over, or saving up for a Mooshood original!! It was a time! Perhaps the Internet got us all in A Stepford Wives kind of style choke hold. I’m really trying to shop the things I already have, plus I’m older now & I just wanna still look good, comfortable with some head turning pieces.

Loved this! I think fast fashion has a purpose also. Like if I have an event I want to go to and wanna look very on trend then instead of investing in something that I may not like next season I'll rather go for the fast fashion option. Saves me headache of having a garment that Ive spent a lot of money on sitting in my wardrobe unused even though I knew Id only enjoy the style for a season. I think a lil fast fashion is great. But basing our wardrobe on timeless quality staple pieces is key. I ve decided I Can't base my wardrobe on current trends. I think a lot of people would benefit thinking about it this way. I would love this sit down style.

I’m halfway through but wanted to comment before I forget- my answer is definitely influenced by me just having gone to the Women Designing Women show at the Met 😅 but fashion is… art. It’s political. It’s intimate. It’s architecture for the body. In an homage to Iris Appel- I decided to wear the carpenter jeans I thrifted and covered in painted on lightning bolts paired with a thrifted quilted jacket. 80% of my closet is from thrift stores. This year, more sewing/reworking, painting, and personalizing of my thrifted wardrobe is the plan!

I am 62 and fashion was established by the have and those (have nots) that got to work in these households were able to sometime be bestowed a piece. Sometime the tailors were the people that had mindset of developing a different look to help a person standout at the many social events. My grandmother worked as a maid and she sewed clothes for them but then she also sewed clothes for her kids and then for us, her grandkids, it would be something from Sound of Music, we would alll have outfits from the same bolt of fabric but she would give us each our own designed pieces. Eor example me being 4 yrs younger than my sister, she would make me a backless (1 strap to keep closed) short set and my sister a sundress, my younger cousin a romper. If there was a naked doll around, she would make them clothes from scraps. Every grandchild got a quilted blanket even my children (and we still have them). I got a taste of sewing from her and back then most blacks had someone to sew their special event clothing. I made money while in college because narrow pants legs became the thing and people paid me to narrow the legs on their existing pants. The whole idea of sewing a look for yourself became scarce when the prices of fabrics begin to skyrocket and stores like Casual Corner, Gap and clearance racks made clothing more affordable than sewing your own and time saving. I have always been myself to what I like in fashion because my mom was totally a fashion person and when she worked in Riches she bought our clothes off season on clearance (and taught me to do this). I also was influenced by Ted Turner TV with the old black and white movies, and I looked at what the people wore. So fashion to me is myself expression for what my character is taking on for the day and how I can make it my own. I started getting pieces from teen shops (very affordable) to add some tweaks to my office looks. Shoes were my favorite update to a regular suit (I sought out options just from regular black pumps); I started wearing high heel booties under my trousers. Getting dress was the most exciting thing about going to work. Co-workers would jokingly say the aisles and hallway was my runway because I walked like I was (probably came from being in Sears charm school and my mom). I enjoyed the conversation subject and I do miss your flips. I became a thrifter and you influenced me on the love of the hunt and it my favorite alone pass time (since I am retired). Hope you help people understand how to breakdown the looks they may find inspirational, from their own closet. Thanks for sharing and blessings to you and all in the days to come.

I'm scrolling on Pinterest listening to this, thinking "hmm what's something unique ya got for me" and how bout I scroll to a pic of you right at 16:11. I agree fashion has changed and you don't know where to draw from especially when back in the authentic times it came so naturally. I found myself (a very unique dresser growing up) getting in my own head and then this fast fashion world kinda oversaturated it and not gnna lie it almost had me thinking that's what style must be these days. It's a journey, it feels so rejuvenating tho to get a new sense of direction and actually create from within. And yes, LOVE A RARE FIND THRIFT!

I liked how you expressed what influences your style. Funnily enough, it was you the helped me to realize that it’s okay to prioritize comfort over everything else. That is now a style marker for me. The other day, my brother said I dress like Spinelli from Recess (which is incredibly accurate), meets the 90s (Sister Sister, Moesha, Nia Long on Fresh Prince) and hip hop culture- still have some sneakers I want to get- with being a mom. I focus less on “fashion” to inform what I wear now

Kia, I appreciate your take on this topic I have always wanted to understand fashion & its origin. But not at a sense where it’s whitewashed- I’d love to see major black designers highlighted & remembered like Ann Lowe, Stephen Burrows & Patrick Kelly. Speaking from a historical perspective- so we can really divulge the history of style/ fashion. Even street style, as you know, came from Hip-Hop culture, Black “urban” folk & outcasts. I’ve watched a few docs but there aren’t too many. Hopefully this is the beginning of a much needed convo across the board. I am definitely taking part. Thanks girl!💖 *sorry for the thinkpiece 🤣

Sustainable is really high quality, mainstream has pushed you away from materials such as leather,100% silk, cotton ect.. towards fast, cheap materials and calling it more "sustainable" or a "vegan" material but in reality,It's a very fine line playing on human psychology for profit and marketing it as a movement or to campaign a story.

While Dapper Dan definitely promoted logos, part of that was being a part of the exclusivity of labels that further promoted exclusion of those that could not afford the brand or exclusivity-for better or worse, exclusivity is also fashion. Now, the plainer things are more expensive, which in essence, makes things with labels in 100 font stand out like a sore thumb, especially to those that have. While I agree with personal style and the uniqueness of it all (I shopped in thrift stores before it became cool to do so as well), people without means often don’t want to stand out bc they’ve always had to. Fast fashion affords people an opportunity to fit in and it is that, imo, that plays a huge role in why people pick what they pick. Here’s so many fast fashion pieces in thrift stores and I see people still gravitating to them. I love my personal style, however, I’ve also earned it bc it wasn’t always cool to the “cool” kids. Now, they eat it up, and I’m also at a place where I can afford a mixture of a lot of things, however, I still enjoy thrifting. Again, fashion can be such a segregating topic on so many levels. We can NOT take money out of the conversation and we can’t assume that most “arrive” over time. What a good convo and so many angles to discuss it from!

The world has made individuals who rewear their clothes “poor” unless the item is $1,000+. We all have certain “trends” that aren’t essentially just trends for us but apart of our personality and has meaning. I believe a trend for 2024 will be understanding we WORK on social media and should make more of conscious decision to spend more time observing what’s in front of us and appreciating the beauty.

My whole strategy for shopping has changed. I’m currently shopping as needed and adding pieces gradually. I think there’s no reason to be shopping every month. I also think we all wear things for different reasons. Some girls have the lifestyle for a micro bag and now we are entering the mega oversized bag trend. I honestly believe in shopping for your lifestyle. Yes consumption is killing the girl’s pockets!!!

sometimes its fun adding modern touch to retro styles, it's similar to Dr. Dre beats.. pretty much mixing and adding to a sample .. so0o, maybe, try remixing a lil exodus and renaissance and what does it look like ? That is innovation. Be a trend setter is what your saying...

To me its work with what you got not trying to keep up with the latest trends. Being inspired by others just doing it in your own way. I have things in my closet from years ago that i can reinvent to make it look like the latest trends. I dont even shop often. I been over the malls cause everything was looking the same. Then everyone wanted the designers logo look. Girl as im typing we saying the same thing. Its time to dust off my sewing machines and get back to what i know how to do. I was even trying to be inspired by certain celebraties. Im fly always have been doing my own thing. Its about 5 fashion girlies i watch on youtube Kia i believe you were the first. I grew up in Conneticut my first fashion inspiration came from the dudes on the block fro m army jackets timbs butter lethers etc. Than of course my family, everybody came to us for style inspiration. I even wear this army jacket that was my sons i just sewed on some patches and i get complimented on it all the time

Sup Kia. I just recently learned that the first cash crop in america was actually indigo, before cotton. The fashion industry like the rest of America was built off the backs of Black Americans/ Ados. The indigo was used to make slave cloth which was a precursor of denim. In fact it was basically the uniform of the enslaved Black folks.

Glory be to God hallelujah!!! What a Awesome Amazing God we serve. The true God who sits high and looks low on all whats going on in the earth. Great Video Kia and Yesssss it's not about Brands at all and you don't have to say what brand u wearing as long as it's comfortable. It's not about what u wear but how it's all style on your body no matter if its designer or not. Everywhere u Look people following trends and People should be themselves and not Follow a Trend just cause it's cool but people fail to understand not everything looks good on everybody which it may look Good on a Mannequin or Magazine but once u get it on yur body it looks completely different and thats understandable cause All bodies is shaped differently so each fit has to be worn differently cause each proportion Is different on each of us so one must develop there own way of styling there looks and individuality will show. We was created to lead and stand out from others and not follow. Its all about Jesus and not about clothes or things. But also in Christ we is his Kings and Queens so he does wants us to represent him as being his children and look nice dress with modesty and have our own personal style like in the other video u made on personal style. You suppose to not allow the clothes to wear u but u wear Them as a Representation of God and Yourself. True Style is Where u dont have to say anything but allow your clothes to Speak. Originality. It goes back to heaven where Lucifer was the angel of music and pride came upon him so heavily and he wanted to be like God and have the angels follow him instead of God and he didn't want to serve God but he wanted people to serve him and when him and the angels disobeyed God was banned from heaven and fell from Heaven like Lighting Striking (Luke 10:18) And made his own home and kingdom in Hell He is the Father of Lies Division Deception and Most of All Imitating and I hate Any Imitating at all cause it's no reason for that. We can be inspire by others style but dont copy. Find ways to incorporate Certain pieces from that look into yours but do it completely differently. We all was created to serve the True Living God and his Son Jesus Christ. Jesus loves us all but hates all Sin. Jesus is very soon to come back here on Earth and his not in his will to see anyone left behind but we must Repent fully and turn away from our sinful ways and ask God to help free us in any areas of weakness his strength will be made perfect 2 Corinthians 12:9,10 Jesus is Free our Free Gift to Salvation and he was sent to this World to Save It To Redeem It to Destroy the works of Evil. We all need a Savior and we not suppose to put any other God's before our True God. Exodus 20:3 What does he mean? Anything or Any1 u praise more or love more than him. There is only one God Only One who sent his Son born through a Virgin Mary that unselfishly gave his life for all mankind on that Cross on Calvary and in 3 days he rose again and his spirit lives. Now the choice is ours where our spirit will go when we pass either Heaven or Hell and it's both very Real. I have seen and heard many stories how God allowed people to experience Hell and actually went there and it was nonstop torment each day minute second hour and it was people who seen heaven as wellllll and Talked about OHHH!!! What A beautiful city it is and it's so much peace there for Eternity. The day anyone hears Jesus knocking on the door of your heart please open up and allow him to live fully inside and receive him as Lord and Savior and the only way Through God is his Son Jesus. This world needs more God and I'm not talking about Babal neither He will never be God no matter how much he tries to encourage people to bow to him. Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy which depends on human traditions and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. Yoga New Aged Practices Law of Attraction healing crystal and mushrooms is not of God but Man Made Religions God's that will never Give u any real peace. God is peace and he can give that same peace to anyone who wants it. His peace is not like the world's peace. His peace is the best peace anyone can have. U can soak in the peace of God. John 14:27 U can indeed eat Mushrooms for healing Properties but its certain ones that u have to eat but no1 not suppose to be praying to mushrooms or Praying or worshiping Crystals there is no true healing in that at all. God is the only True Healer. These is Deities that portraying as Light but its all Darkness and Satan is using these all to trick people into worshiping them and not God but he is A Liar. My people perish cause of lack of knowledge Hosea 4:16 and when we all become fully aware of his knowledge we can share it with others and prayerfully it will help many become free. Whomever the son sets free is free Indeed. John 8:36. Now the Law of Attraction let's think about that word for a second. What is u really Attracting to yourself? Light or Darkness? Patience or Next Day Stuff? Now I can clearly tell That God doesn't have anything to do with this but the Imitating Devil in Hell has everything to do with this. I dont care how much you say I want this this day or that day To be honest It will not happen until God will allow it to happen for you. We not God and we can't make something happen be4 it's time. There is Timing and Season in Christ and we have to learn to be Patient and wait on him. First be4 he blesses us he first prepares us Mentally Emotionally Spiritually Physically for it to make sure we really ready for what he's about to do in our life. We have to learn to wait patiently. Those that wait on him he shall renew their strength they shall mount up with wings like eagles they shall run and not be weary they shall walk and not faint.Isaiah 40:31 The enemy inmated this from God we can speak words of Faith over our life and situations each day and night and God honors that so much. Cause now faith is saying that even though we can't see it we believing that God is going to do what he said he's going to do but the key word Is God is going to do it not ourselves and by us Declaring and Decreeing the word over our life it will come to pass in his Timing and Season so continue to Be the best u can be In God Kia. Be dope in Him and allow your light to shine in him like never be4. U is unique and u continue to Stand as a True Leader in God and allow him to speak to u on how u can do this even more for him and listen to him and he will continue to guide u through everything. Have a bless peaceful safe positive Weekend in God. 🙏🏼😊 love your hair and always does and always will.

I think fashion is a part of natural expression! Animals even utilize fashion to make themselves attractive to other mates, they even dress up their environments. Cultures around the world utilized garments since the beginning of time, colors, textiles, we’ve always been fashionable 😍

Yessssssss Recreate and not Imitate!!! 🙏🏼😊 Glory be to God.. Yessssss Take Accountability and walk as The Individual God has Created us to be In Him cause we all was created by him. O What a Great God we serve. Yesss Kia I just mention that in the other long post I did Stop wearing something just cause u see someone else wearing it. That look may not be for You. Our True Identity is Found in God and that comes with having a personal relationship with him and not Religiously and Receiving him as Lord and Savior into your heart. When u have a Personal relationship with Lord Jesus u will learn who u is even more and he will began to download more and more into you his knowledge his wisdom self love acceptance loving yourself more and not trying to look like someone else or be someone. He will download in u what certain colors you look Good in different types of clothes and not just that Hairstyles accessories and what kinds of food he wants u to consume more. Our God is Greattttttt like this and he will never let us down. Just rely on him and allow him to take full control over your life and trust and know he won't fail. He's the Original of the Original!!!!! My prayer is that this nation will want to be more like Jesus and obey his commands and live truly for him and have the love of Christ flowing in there hearts and walk in The love of Christ towards everyone. He said in all ways knowledge him and when we do that we will indeed direct our paths. When we delight ourselves in God he will give us the desires our of heart. God-Bless you Kia 🙏🏼😊

Nowadays I just see all the YT fashion girlies are wearing the same thing. I also think a lot of women are throwing on a lot of designer with no direction and it looks too contrived. I think personal style is dead and a lot of people feel entitled to know where you purchased something that may be special to you. I notice women are very intrusive when it comes to wanting to know. What they don’t realize is the girls that are sharing their every purchase, they are getting paid to do that.
