The Star-Spangled Banner at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Games (Post 9/11)

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from the Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key.
The American flag rescued from the World Trade Center Site on September 11, 2001 was carried into the stadium by an honor guard of American athletes and was carried in by firefighters and police officers to remember the tragedy.
The National Anthem is performed by The Utah Symphony and Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
From SALT LAKE CITY 2002 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on February 8th, 2002 at Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium.

For those that don’t know, that is the actual American flag that was pulled from the remains of the World Trade Center of the 9/11 terroristic attacks. I don’t ever wanna wish for another 9/11 but we were more United back then than we’ve ever been. There wasn’t any of the craziness we deal with today. I miss when we didn’t disparage one another over the littlest things. No matter your race, or religion, or political party, sexual orientation, or gender, you are an American and more importantly, a human being!

That was a sacred, and reverent moment….I feel it still. God will always watch over us. He never abandons his children, it is they who sometimes walk away, but he never will. God teaches us in the ways we need to learn…we must trust him, and trust the Lord with all of our hearts, and he will direct our paths.

Nobody can stop the U.S.A. from her United States Constitution….and Christ can take anything and bring beauty and life back into it…with his grace, and our hearts and hands to help. May peace and joy return on this earth soon.

@@thecomedypilot5894 No it’s a shame of Republicans did this country because it was Republicans who put us in the Middle East. For 20 fucking years. Trump had the ability to get this out he did nothing. He called our soldiers who got wounded sick and died and got caught and captured traders weak and pathetic. He went after a war hero McCain after he died and called him a traitor to a nation after he was tortured for seven years in a POW camp. This is the guy you are his president. You have caused chaos in our country. I know you wanna vote for someone who wants to make a communist country and you guys are completely for it that’s great good job so proud of you guys. Uneducational fools. Most you guys probably know the history of the world they alone the history of America. You probably don’t even know the dynamic between Pakistan and Israel. You guys bow down to a fool and a false idol. He lies to you you guys take it because you think he’s smart. He’s a man who’s flat broke they need his bills now about to lose all of his assets. And you want him to run our country. Just want to put us in World War III. He’s a draft dodger he has knows nothing about war whatsoever. The last Republican we have was also a draft dodger. Shocking. They want to start a war but they don’t want to be in it. He wants to negotiate his power while he’s in president we don’t negotiate with terrorists. Also he didn’t stop any immigrants from coming across the border millions of them crossed. He got no backing for his wall where he was present no backing for the border. Actually it’s the Republicans and the GOP that stopping the best way to build that there is and has been in a very very long time. So everything that’s going on is Republicans fault. We have better jobs more job opportunities our stock market is rising which is great for the 4 OK. Primary is actually gone down since Trump is not in office anymore. But every accolade that Biden has actually don’t get pushed to the side so you guys can say all the bad stuff that he’s done. The only thing in the Congress has been doing for the last couple years is wasting their time in our tax dollars. They’ve been trying to impeach a president that they can absolutely nothing because they have nothing. The one person that they thought they had that was good for them was getting information from Russia who is once again trying to get involved in our elections. They also think apparently half of you which proves that you’re an educated that you can Impeach Hunter. So they’re all sitting on their tail between their legs. Are they doing is fighting amongst each other instead of proposing bills or actually working. You bitch about making America great again all you guys are doing is trying to fight for a communist country. No one’s trying to take your firearms away because we have the right to bear arms. We’re just trying to make it to where people that are unstable can’t shoot up schools. Because when people in the world here and think about America it’s not shootings because we have one every fucking week. People are sick and tired of losing their children to someone walking into a school and murdering them. And they’re not using a Handguns to do it they’re using assault rifles to do it. This is why we say you’re uneducated. You guys are the anti-Americans not the Democrats. Sorry to burst your little bubble that you have to live in. Also not all Democrats are all those Wolk dumbasses they’re on KZread and TV. A lot of us are actually conservative. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

The thing I love about this rendition of our national anthem is how it starts off solemn and steady, then as it gets to “and the rockets red glare” you can feel the momentum building and then the sudden crescendo right after “that our flag was still there” to being bold and powerful. That right there is why this rendition is my favorite hands down

Seeing that torn American flag was so heartbreaking and yet so inspiring as it showed how even though USA's wounds were still fresh because of 9/11, as it happened a few months before the games took place, we are still a strong country that will refuse to let terror and evil take us down.

This arrangement was by Robert Shaw, who conducted the performance at the opening ceremony at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for twenty years and founded the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus in 1970. Shaw passed away three years before the 2002 Winter Games and it was fitting that the Utah Symphony Orchestra and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (today the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square) would perform that arrangement.

No, this arrangement was by Mack Wilburg. Robert Shaw would never have allowed the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to perform his arrangement as he HATED them, so it stands to reason his estate would also never allow it

Wow. I just looked this up to remind my husband of their outfits, upon hearing that SLC will host again! We were teenagers when this aired. Now we're both in tears, as soon as I saw that flag. We know where it came from. I completely forgot that "2002 Olympics" were right agter 9/11....2001.... my brain didn't connect the 2. I guess I forgot. But everything floods back with the sight of the flag. God Bless America. I saw a lotnof red faces in the video, and I guarantee it wasn't only on account of the cold air. If we're sitting here in tears in 2024, you bet people in 2002 being there live were in tears. How united we were. How proud to be Americans we were. What happened? I am prpid to be an American. I teach online to people overseas. I am proud to display my American flag in my online classroom. Land of the FREE. HOME of the BRAVE.

Oh, say can you see, By the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed, At the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, Were so gallantly streaming. And the rocket's red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night, That our flag was still there. Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave, For the land of the free, and the home of the brave Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave, For the land of the free, and the home of the brave

What if there was universal repentance?? Maybe God would be happy. Things would turn around. Think of how he must feel when it comes to how we get along. I hope we can remember what he gave us…everything good, through his beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Do we care how they feel? How they weep? How they love us? I care a really lot!!
