The Spring Energy Awesome Sauce Controversy Explained

Спорт

We unpack just what the heck is going on with endurance sports nutrition company Spring Energy and accusations that it produced a "fraudulent" gel called AwesomeSauce, containing less than a half of the calories and carbs it claims to contain. The controversy flared up when ultraunning coach and podcaster Jason Koop revealed he'd sent Spring Energy's Awesome Sauce gel for testing. Koop also went on to call out various influencers and prominent athletes and coaches who have been involved in the development and promotion of Awesome Sauce.

This is such a huge problem. As an ultra runner - the getting the calories wrong over a 15-30 hours will absolutely make the differ between finish or not. Recovering from caloric deficiency during the race is so hard, so this isn’t a minor problem. It also happens to be positioned as a premier product that costs more than cheaper options. I felt so duped. Thanks for your coverage.

thanks for this video - I use that spring flavor gel almost exclusively and have noticed that it didn't give me the calories - energy I expected.

Very well said, from an ethical standpoint coaches should not accept sponsorships so that their athletes can be confident there is no financial bias behind the coach's recommendations. It's crazy how those two coaches Koop called out got away with not only promoting the product, saying they created the product to backpedaling to just being tastetesters and naming, to them not even using the product they promoted because they thought it was bad all because they are such positive and good people and their fans went and attacked Koop for calling them out. It's crazy how people disregard ethics.

Agreed! In addition add to it - the Roches overly emotional tribe of people who are whining about the call out. Totally justified!

The Roches didn’t coach athletes into success. Those athletes were already doing well so let’s not over credit them. They just need a lot of love and hugs from coaches. It’s pretty clear.
