The speedrunner who had prophetic dreams [a fireside story]

Ойындар

Speedrunners & gamers often dream about their games and online worlds... but has a speedrunner ever dreamed about a new strategy that actually worked, or about a world record that actually happened? In this fireside story, I recount the tale of a speedrunner, and his prophetic dreams of a number of world records that actually ended up happening.

Years ago I dreamed of a reroute for Haunted Towers in Spyro the Dragon 120%. The next day, I got talking with a few others and when it was timed it was found to be 5-7 seconds faster than the previous route. It's still used in runs today :) It's actually mentioned in the most recent marathon showing of the speedrun - kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIKGw7mon7XfmrA.html

Its a common thing when you spend most of the day playing that game for some time with no interesting event taking place irl. I remember once I was playing a game since wake up to bed time for some days and my dreams where just gameplay, like being played by me but only the screen, not the only time I dreamed like this, just this time felt so odd because was like 24h of same game everyday, wake up, play, go to sleep and keep playing lol

Not speedrunning, but I was stumped with some puzzles in Braid and The Witness that I went to bed and dreamt the solution to. According to Jon Blow (the developer) in interviews, he actually got comments like this fairly often about players being unable to solve a puzzle, going to bed and dreaming the solution, waking up, and solving it their first try.

I also had this kind of dreams when I was actively speedrunning, when I was 13-14, but my speedgame is known by just a few people in a French speaking community, so I never thought it really mattered that much. I remember dreaming about a jump about a gap that was too long, I remember talking while attempting this jump for a minute and getting it in a specific room. One or two months later I got to do a race and in that specific room, as I was talking, I didn't pay attention to what I was doing in the game since I was so tired. After 50 seconds I soft of woke up and realised that I was still in the same room, the next jump I did, did cross that gap. It gains 0.1s but you have an interval of 2 to 4 frames to do it so it isn't worth it except for WR attempts. Before that, when chasing WRs in a new category using a newly discovered glitch, I had been grinding for two days to try and get a PB, and a sub 9:10. After that I had a dream where I was speaking to another runner telling him "that's a nice time because 8=3+5". The day after I did a run, I got 8:59.33 IGT, I thought it was a bad run so I did another one right after and I got 8:33.55. And as of today, even though it was a more of a fail compilation than an actual run, I'm proud to have had a PB that looked nice when written out, I can't tell you any of my actual PBs without looking as src, but I'll always remember that 8:33.55.

Had a dream one night of me beating my score on "super hot endless mode - 216- no corner camping on level break-in" super hot is one of those games i like to play endless mode in when i am taking a break from art." Well i made a score of 216 and for the longest time i couldn't beat it. one night prior after working a shift of 13 hours on a 3d model for a client, i went to bed and had a dream of just sheer excitement, like i was in the third person looking over my shoulder and on the screen was superhot and a score of 311. the next day after doing a few hours of sculpting, i decided to take a break, i felt good, like how i felt when i got 216, low and behold, i beat 216 and got 287. Well thinking "welp i beat my score, wasn't like the dream" i let that record of mine stand for a night and went back to work. the next day, i decided to stream super hot and try and beat my record for fun, but i had the same feeling i had with beating 216, but even more so i was feeling, feelings of deja vu. like the dream, everything was fitting into place, and boom, right when i reached 311, i saw the same death and trap i died at in the dream. since then i have not been able to beat my record.

I often have dreams where something unsolved, in-game or online, happens - it's just the way our brains process information - my "gaming dreams" however, usually consisted of a wall literally opening up in a game where I was stuck (like Tomb Raiders, before I had internet), or a frustrating moment getting relived... As to prophetic? My friend once dreamed that the next Tekken separated Kuma and Panda as separate characters... Namco eventually did it some years later. There are many "dream scenarios" gamers have that devs or modders might, or might not fulfill eventually.

we had this very hard skip in far cry 1 in level archive around august last year that i had previously found to be possible and that would save around 40 seconds but it was just too inconsistent to properly pull off because it involved throwing a barrel down an elevator shaft what would have to land upright on a small platform on top of the elevator. apparently when maltemller, another speedrunner of the game, saw it, he was really fond of it and wanted it to work so bad that he actually had a dream of optimizing it to make it consistent and sure enough, that is what he did in the following days. i find this story you tell also possible because when you grind a game, it just gets into your head so much that you can have it haunt your dreams, producing a more interesting perspective on what you've been analyzing thus far.

This has happened to me multiple times in my life, where I’ll have a dream about something very specific and than maybe a day, a few days, weeks, months or even years later, what happened in the dream will happen exactly in real life, i only realize it was the dream once It happens again in real life and then I can be correct on exactly what someone else is gonna say next or something specific that happens. I’ve had one about getting left behind on a bike ride with my dad and brother and then remembered that they’d be waiting up ahead for me, which is pretty much the only time it’s been practical for me to know, all the other times has just been something short and a few words being said in conversation at the exact same place and position, the same movements being made by people and same actions. If you’d like I’d be willing to talk about this more on discord as it’s something extremely interesting to that has happened to me over many years of my life. I usually call them “Déjà vu” moments

No man, I dont think it's a coincidence at all. I have had a lot of moments in my life, where dreams have spooked me by their prophetic potential. I had an uncle when I was 8 years old. I loved the guy, he was my absolute favorite person in the world. The night he died, I had a dream that there was a fire that wouldn't extinguish, and a smoke alarm that wouldn't quit. The morning I woke from the dream, I told my parents about the dream and my fathers face went white. He then told me about how my uncle died from smoke inhalation when he left his dinner in the oven and fell asleep. Dreams are the gateway to things we truly hold dear and/or important to ourselves. There is something about dreams that we do not yet know, but have amazing potential. I really believe these stories that David Clemens told are true.

About 10 years ago, maybe more, I was in a guild on the Hellscream server in WoW. I met a guy from my country online and we are still friends to this day. He is mildly dyslexic, and struggles to read. He played priest and wasn't that great, but doing alright... Suddenly one day during a dungeon run he started doing really good dps. Everyone joked about it and I asked him what was going on. He said he had dreamt his rotation. We laughed and thought he was kidding...and continued....and about 2 bosses later we were like ...Jesus Allan whats going on? Top damage in the raid? WTF is going on with you today? He said it again...I dreamt my rotation last night. He had a 7 button gaming mouse and literally dreamt how to set up his keys so that his rotation was now doing more damage than he had ever done. He couldnt believe it himself. Overnight. Just like that. And everyone could see it.

I find it interesting that the video that you're showing in the corner is *basically* what he saw in his dream. Obviously, they play a lot of the level so they know how things go and what the level's like, and they'd be doing what they would usually do in IRL speedruns, so what you're seeing in the video is probably 80-90% *identical* to what was seen in the dream. It's interesting because, you know most dreams are novel, and there's no way to see them again once you wake up, they're just stuck in your memory. Of course if you're an artist you could make pictures, but most people don't have that skill. But the unique circumstances of a IL speedrun make this possible in a way, and that's a nice thing to be able to experience.

I have had seemingly prophetic dreams tons of times. Almost always about videogames, never certain enough to act on. The earliest I can remember is when I was a little kid. I dreamt about the Oda Nobunaga mission in Age of Empires 2 a few days before I played AoE2 for the first time.

Perhaps what really happen is that while he was sleeping his brain manage to pick the bits of information needed to come out with a pattern or way to get the WR, just like how Giuseppe Tartini came up with his masterpiece the devil's trill sonata in a dream.

I've had video game dreams that seem to point out to new strategies or where a lost collectable might be but most of these turn out to be, well, a pipe dream. But I'm sure along the lines the gamer gods granted me with one that became true during my childhood obsessive gaming years but have since forgotten. You never know...

I never dreamt anything with speedruns but I couldn’t work how to change backbone size in spore and the answer came to me in a dream and what was really strange was when it actually worked. That was super weird and I almost have my doubts it happened.

Well, many people report such things. It is not common, but happens often enough to be told on the internet. Sometimes even the people in the dreams were seen by those in real life. So, yes. There is something more. And we still don't know it. We don't even know what exactly happens during dreams, from a metaphysical perspective at least. Where does the soul go? Forward in time? To another place? Or - sometimes, as in Clemens' case - to places where something interesting happens that does have an impact on them?

When I was a kid, me and my brother used to play Donkey Kong Country 3 in the Super Nintendo, and we were stuck in the thunderstorm stage for weeks. One day I dreamed that we had passed that stage, and that the following one was a jungle with pink Koin enemies that killed you by pushing you off ledges. We played the following day, and I told my brother I had this dream, and we were pretty spooked that the following stage was exactly like that XD. Still, it was probably a coincidence. Guessing about the pink Koins is not super outlandish, and it would make sense for them to be in a jungle stage thematically.

If you think about a problem really not its not a rare thing that you think about it: most commonly a mathematical or logical problem, but I feel thinking about some new speedrun strat is pretty similar(I do both of these things). That's much more rare that you actually solve a problem in your dreams for example because your brain works differently, but happens sometimes. Actually dreaming about someone else doing your strat seems very unlikely, but definitely possible :D I don't feel like this must be prophetic but who knows. I really enjoyed this story tho cool vid :)

@@drew8235 I don't allege to know much, but if hypothetically there is an afterlife then there's more to life than just logic and reason. So there must be a way to communicate to the uni/multiverse, existence, god or what have you. If I'm wrong, whatever we'll find out when we're dead no biggie there's either something or nothing believe what you want

So I mean, it wasn't anything as specific as a 1/8 chance on a random guard spawn with the RNG of forward boosts/backboosts working in my favor BUT I was 16 at the time and had just gotten my driver's license to where I could drive on my own, any time of the day. I had also been attending social skills classes because I was not so good at that. These social skills classes happened late at night, 7 or 8 PM. I had a dream that I was driving and it was really vivid, one of those dreams that you're surprised that you wake up from? Almost. It was pretty boring for the most part cause I was just driving on the highway home, minus there were some differences like a house, but in real life that house was totally broken down. (Like ceiling caved in, parts of the walls are missing, that level of broken down.) But in my dream, A car pulled from the opposite lane and came to hit me but I went right through it and kept driving, like nothing happened. But it happened on a specific S-curve that always worried me while driving because of how fast you go on the interstate. Nevertheless, the very next day, on my way home from social skills classes, on the SAME S-CURVES, A car veers from their side of the road, travelling 70 MPH. They're probably like 30 feet in front of me when they start to veer but it was the weirdest thing. I didn't like think, or panic, or react in any way. I like smoothly just pulled to the other lane and proceeded to FREAK THE HELL OUT AFTERWARDS. Lol! I think someone just gave me a heads up or something, I dunno. Whatever it is, Life's RNG, or RNJesus, Thanks.

When I was a kid, I was playing DKR, I would get beaten by the octopus boss time and time again, until one night I dreamt about the wizpig face on the overworld laughing and opening. Three days later I won the race against the octopus and it happened, just like in my dream wizpig face opened.
