The Spectacular Fall of Ben Simmons

Спорт

Ben Simmons has had one of the most spectacular falls in recent NBA history. From being an All Star and All Defensive player for the top seeded 76ers, to being a $40 million liability for the Brooklyn Nets. So how did one of the NBA's most promising young players fall so fast, so quickly?

Stat-wise he was better. Dude was really, really NBA ready. It's why everyone was sure he was going to be an all-time great: most young players improve each year and peak in their late 20's/early 30's. Simmons pretty much did the opposite and got worse. If only he had Giannis' attitude and work ethic.

@@Kagemusha08 that's why I'm not a fan of those "analytics". They don't tell the whole story. Stats wise makes sense, and then you watch the games it's a different story especially in the playoffs. Hell even Giannis got a jumper and had a crazy work ethic like you said and look where he is now compared to Simmons. All he needed was a jumper idk why he didn't try to improve it.

"I never saw a player where one specific moment in a specific game ruined their career" Watch the 95 Magic vs Rockets finals. Nick Anderson missed 4 crucial free throws. He single handedly drained all life from the Magic with that moment and he was never the same again. His decent 70+ free throw % went below 50 after that and he became a huge liability. So it does happen. Simmons issue is confidence. He has none. Why he can shoot 3s under his terms but never when he's needed too. That's his problem and he overwhelmed himself with that and it destroyed him it looks like. He just couldn't handle being in such a high pressure situation.

He seemed to be dealing with some mental health issues so I wouldn’t completely sum it up to just “hurt feelings”, but I do think there was some entitlement there since he tried to reclaim some of the money that he justifiably lost. Just thought I’d add that bit of context in there.

It's not that Ben Simmons didn't improve...it's that I don't think he ever made any effort to improve. It's one thing when a guy works on something over the summer and doesn't get better at it. At least the guy put in the effort and showed that he wants to get better. As a coach, I can work with that. What I can't work with is a guy whose summer program involved getting entangled in the Kardashian web. I can't work with someone that doesn't want to get better. I used to tell my troopers this all the time. You can be bad at something and want to improve and I'll work with you all day and after duty hours to help you get better. If you don't give a shit, let me know now so we can start with some motivation (which they can't do in the NBA since you can't smoke an NBA player until the doctor tells you to stop).

The recency bias around Ben Simmons is so strong that it is basically impossible to really argue against it. That dude, whatever we're saying about him, is/was a 6'10 DPOY candidate that can lockdown 1 to 5, play solid help-defense and do some good stuff in transition. The only thing we learned is that he's definitely not a guard and IDK why it took 4 years. I'm still confident that he'll find a Draymond type of role in the league at some point (I'm not saying he'll be AS GOOD as Draymond obviously). You're making the point that he is not able to play defense like a traditionnal big but that's mainly because he played as a fucking PG since 2016 for some reasons lol, I'm pretty sure that with the excellent defensive abilities he have he could developp into a pretty good defensive minded PF in the future. Obviously he shouldnt have a max contract but I'll never blame the player in this type of situations. Anyways, I'm not blaming the Sixers, but there are a lot of draftees (and even players overall) who have had bad experiences there. It's suspicious.

Any other player is injured and it’s understandable. Ben has back surgery before the season and y’all questioning his injury. Very interesting

He has millions in the bank and doesn't care. That's why the CBA favors the players. It's guaranteed money and the owners pay for it dearly. Kyle Lowry from the Heat is another perfect example. ALWAYS injured and he's getting paid more than $30 mil a year doing effing nothing while being fat and overweight. That's why the CBA should be reviewed every 2 years.

I know I will get hate from this. I don’t claim to be some great nba analyst either, but I never thought Ben was good. He always played basketball awkwardly and like he only played a few years as a kid.

Ben Simmons is an Off-Season Sniper, only shoots and drains shots in the off-season. doesn't translate to real games. I don't care about workout clips anymore

lying to Ben Simmons and not holding him accountzble of his bullshit is what created this mindset in the first place, you guys need to stop with the Doc Rivers and everybody should have kept liying to him and would have made things better narrative
