Nathan, I'm glad you went back to the old format of making videos where you are doing them by yourself and you have the camera pointed down in front of you. Just like the old days. I always liked the way you originally did your videos.

I am so glad to see that you pulled out of some of your old stock. It was interesting. A lot of things are old date but if you are hungry enough you would not complain. Hell in Vietnam we got a LOT of the Korea canned stuff. These kids today do not know how good they have it even if it is old it is still filling - unless clearly spoiled. The hard stuff you can always work with somehow Hint about the jerky. Put it in a canteen cup of boiling water. It will soften, you will also have a nice hot soup you could drink and chew at the same time. (sorry I did not know how to explain that one)

I live in Norway and I have bought that beef jerkey here before and if you get it fresh from the store, it's exactly like the American beef jerkey. I know this because I grew up in Minnesota so I've had both.

Very cool Nathan. ORP'S are excellent. Solid components. Most, not all, looked good and tasted good. It would seem. I am glad you had some fun. Peace, John. Be safe.

Take the main out and that's a lot of junkie food. That's not good when you consider this is for twelve hours, not one meal. Lots of drinks to cope with the heat in the Middle East. A British ration without a cup of tea!?! This is perhaps the biggest surprise in this ration. I think with the jerky, you're supposed to let it sit in your mouth and absorb some saliva to soften up before you start chewing it. The dry South African jerky is like this. I thought that blackcurrant drink was going to be like Ribena in the cup. Considering this ration expired nine years ago, it's in pretty good shape.

Silly question--what makes you think that this ration tasted any better when "fresh?" Spices serve to preserve food and flavor food but sometimes the flavor is an acquired taste. The Oreos and beef jerky were good controls because they were commercial foods available today and can be compared side-by-side. Is Roundtree still in business? I'll have to check. You are braver than me. Expired food potentially means a hospital stay. Thanks for publishing this video. Military rations have been part of my life for my entire life. When I studied the history of rations, I was initially surprised to see that most military rations are sourced from commercial sources--but I was not yet in high school when I figured that out. The 12-hour ration pack in your video appeared to be a replacement for the standard 24-hour ration pack. A Big Lie is "one size fits all." Different rations are required for different conditions. What to do when a unit is on the move or in contact with the enemy and can't take a meal break? I noted that the 12-hour ration pack was heavy on snack foods, especially candy. The packing list was a good reference. In the Hill Aerospace Museum, a World War Two pilot flight meal was on display until it simply rotted away--the "meal" consisted of a selection of candies in a box about the size of a cigarette pack. www.aerotoons.com/blog/ww2_aircrew_lunch.html A sugar rush, a dash of caffeine (or something stronger), and drinks both hot and cold give a psychological boost when the mess tent and field kitchen are miles away and the enemy is shooting at you. There are several situations outside of military combat when stopping for a meal isn't practical. Preparing, consuming, and the clean-up may take three hours. Hikers used trail mix and granola--now there are energy bars. Driving cross country and don't want to halt more than 15 minutes? Working on a project with an expired deadline and there's no time for pizza or takeout? Whether sitting in a blind or stalking, hunting is similar to combat in that there's a lot of waiting and the noise and smells of cooking will alert the quarry. Fishing may preclude cooking food--if it can't be eaten cold or isn't packed in an insulated container, your hasty fishing meal will just have to be consumed at ambient air temperature! Many situations in "the real world" preclude fine dining and may require your dinner to fit in a pocket. What I take away from videos like this is what decision makers determined suitable for young troops (infantry combat is a young man's team sport), and this was hopefully based on experience. Once upon a time the emergency combat ration was made unappetizing so that starving teen-age soldiers wouldn't gobble up their emergency ration and be left without when the supply chain failed. www.wearethemighty.com/mighty-history/field-ration-d-hersheys-chocolate/ I'm glad that the Tropical Bar is no longer current. I was issued the with MCI and back when the MRE came in dark brown plastic bags Tropical Bars were issued--but fell from favor over their consistency and flavor. I thought that they were okay--but I grew up poor and still regard sleeping indoors and buying food to be luxuries. A secondary function of military rations is unofficial barter or gifts. War zones are blighted areas where everything is in short supply. This man helped win the first Western victory of the Cold War by donating his candy rations--and swapping tobacco rations to his buddies in exchange for more candy. www.thecandybomber.org/gails-story/ Sometimes special morale rations win wars in unexpected ways.
