In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Greece. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. Though certain death awaits the Spartans, their sacrifice inspires all of Greece to unite against their common enemy.

It’s no different than being an MMA fighter, boxer, etc. You go into a fight knowing you may win….or you may lose. But you go in despite what your own thoughts are. Win or lose, you GO! This separates the men and women from the boys and girls. Hopefully the young……they learn something from your own actions.

This is before the battle of Salamis. This is no reconnaissance force, modern historians estimate this army reached up to 250,000, the greatest land army ever assembled up to that point. Also after Salamis, the Persians still had hundreds of thousands of soldiers in Greece and could have won the war but were defeated at Platea by a Greek force lead by the Spartans

@@hassanabdulsalam1000 yeah there were 100,000 greeks at Platea, that doesn't go against my point. Persia burnt Athens, but the greeks then conquered western Turkey. Just because the Persians won a battle, doesn't discount they lost 6 other battles (Artemesium, Salamis, Platea, Mycale, Eurymedon, Marathon) and ended up losing the war. The goal of the invasion was the conquest of Greece, at the end of the war, no greeks were conquered and the Persians LOST territory. Presenting the Persian wars as a Persian victory is actually insane. It is one of the most single sided wars in history, the Persians losing hundreds of thousands of men and dozens of cities while the Greeks gained dozens of cities and took hardly any casualties. Im assuming you are Iranian, since Iran is the only place that peddles this nonsense, but you have experienced high levels of historical delusion.

Without demeriting the Spartans, 300 represented 3% of the Sparta male population, all the 300 died there, Honor and Glory. But, who reminds the no less valiant 700 TESPIANS who also stayed and died fighting the persians in the Termopilas? Their sacrifice was much bigger, because they were the 30% of the male population of the litle state-city of Tespia. Also there were fighting hopelessly 500 Tebans, also nobody reminds them. HONOR AND GLORY to these anonymous herous, nobody reminds them. I do.

1:33 Those are primitive fragmentation grenades. Explosives are a very powerful and very obscure "artform" in human technology. It dazes those close to the blast, disorienting them with flashes and thunderous sounds that deafens their victims, and that's those who are lucky enough to not get hit by shrapnel. Hence why it is called "magic" in this ancient time. Bombardiers (soldiers especializing in tossing bombs) became an important aspect of warfare after gunpowder gaining popularity because of this very purpose, and especially because it allows for exceptional breakage of enemy formations. I'm guessing this was what the Persian army intended to do... but such bombs require being thrown by hand AND close proximity due to its weight. Without supporting shield and spear infantry to protect them from the Spartans, they were easy pickings.

The thing is the phalanx of the Spartans was no joke. What’s more is this movie doesn’t depict just how heavily armored Spartans were as well. They were encased in bronze armor not in leather undies. In fact historically they were better armored than the Persians so much so that it sent Xerxes into such a rage that he “leapt three times”. Anytime Xerxes tried force they phalanxed up and anything less was like sending meat into a meat grinder. What’s more is that siege weapons were used but to construct something like what you are likely thinking of and trying to get it through the Hot Gates was nearly impossible. In fact if Xerxes hadn’t found out about the secret path to flank the Spartans it’s quite likely they would have held out.

It's literally a 1 to 1 make of the comic book. If it helps, it supposed to be interpreted as propaganda as the narrator is actually retelling the story to soldiers before a big battle (the last battle gives it away as he was not even there!). You could also make the argument that Spartans are not the good guys in the film (you could find hundreds of examples throughout, such as throwing babies down pits). The film is surprisingly deep considering the blockbuster stylings. You could however make your argument for the sequel as it clearly has no deeper meaning... but it up's the style on spectacle.

Ahhh...this where many people misunderstand this film. The whole movie is actually portrayed exactly how it was told by the soldier (hence the narrator). It's an epic, a legend, and they're often so more glorified, exaggerated, almost fantasy. Kind of like....errr, tales in the Bible? Stories of the past are usually told in such manners. This movie actually represented it well. It's beautiful IMO.

the 300 narrative has been told over and over throughout history in over-the top ways ever since it happened. I remember when I was in college and my art history professor brought up this movie because of how legendary this battle was and how different cultures were inspired by it. Raw tale of fighting to the death, outnumbered but not out-skilled, etc. It stirs the imagination pretty much to see how so few could hold back so many and that imagination beckons storytelling grandeur
