It has been a while that a new GA airplane has put a smile on my face. The sparker from TL certainly did that this past week.
This is the news light aircraft to hit the GA market in quite a while. Looks good, comes with retracts and you have a great finish in the interior. This plane also flies very nicely at 200 mph.
TL Stream review - • TL Stream Is A Fun Lit...
Powerful, safe, comfortable, and very spacious; these are the attributes that characterize the newest modern aircraft from the TL-ULTRALIGHT, the Sparker. With Sparker, you'll have an elaborate and spacious cockpit. You’ll enjoy the look and feel that this modern design offers. Forget the pre-flight dilemma, with how much luggage you will be able to take. Sparker has the largest luggage compartment in the UL category. And because the compartment is accessible through exterior doors, it‘s convenient. As a result, you can sit back and enjoy your journey. That's why we created Sparker.

Bubble canopies are a very BAD idea and here's why - if you have to put it in a field you have about a 40% chance of flip over. Once that happens, you're trapped. It's happened to many a pilot. Charlie Hillard in his Sea Fury back in the 90's was in taxi on the runway during an airshow, he hits the brakes and it flips over. The top of the vertical sunk into soft sandy soil and with the aircraft upside down, the bubble canopy got crushed and killed mister Hillard. And recently an aerobatic pilot in a canopy aircraft had to do a forced landing in a "corn" field and you guessed it - he flipped over - the whole thing on camera and guess what ?? Pilot was trapped, hanging upside down and no way to get out. Thankfully the airplane never caught on fire. He called on his cell phone and about 10 minutes later people came and got him out - but it wasn't easy. So what's the moral of this story ?? Fly bubble canopied aircraft at your own risk.

LSA's and ultralights have gone into absolutely insane price regions lastly... (in Europe this plane fits into the 600kg ultralight category). Not so long ago, a VL3 could be bought for 130k€ (with RG), nowadays, it starts at around 240k, with a steep curve upwards depending on painting and options (engine, avionics,...), up to the 400k mark... this is just insane for a 2-seater !!! GA aircrafts are indeed more costly in operation and maintenance, but it's a pity that it has now become sometimes cheaper to fly GA than to fly LSA... :(

I don't ride or fly bubble canopied aircraft after watching a video {recent} of an airshow pilot in a bubble canopy aircraft had to force land in a "corn" field. The aircraft flipped over and part of the load was on the bubble canopy and the pilot could not open it, thus making him trapped. He called for help, and thankfully the aircraft did not catch on fire - but he's hanging upside down trapped - bout 10 minutes later people came and got him out. But it was not easy getting him out. Egress is one of the top things I look at in evaluating an aircraft. One reason I favor high wing aircraft because if you flip, the wing is on the bottom and much easier to escape. I mean heck, it's bad enough you're hanging upside down, but to hang upside down AND deal with a wing on top of you is not a good situation. Then what if you got kids or a disabled person as a passenger ?? How you going to get them out ?? After all, as PIC, it's YOUR responsibility to get your passengers out.

Forces may grow up with speed, in all ultralights I tested it is like this, in Sparker not. And I dont like very long start on grass rwy with 912 in comparison with other ultralights. I think that wing is optimized for fast flight and havent high lift on slow speed,so it isnt good for short rwy. This plane was created with mosaic in mind. Mosaic is designed to allow for these types of aircraft. I am looking to get one when the final rule is published late 2024 or early 2025.

4-seater and increased payload would have been nice, though. Nonetheless, this one is respectable. Modern suite, modern engine, carbon fiber, retracts, parachute, experimental for owner modifications at his/her liking, etc.

It's pretty, but too expensive. A lot of this automotive technology that's being adapted for airplanes is kinda like going backwards in a fancy way. Water cooled engines went out in WWII. Why do we want them back? One more system that needs maintenance. And antifreeze. Electronics that depend on the electrical system to operate the engine. They don't make tow trucks for airplanes. I like magnetos that still run with no connection to battery or alternator. I'm amazed at the number of flight instructors who don't know that mags are self-contained, stand-alone complete ignition systems independent of the electric system. With magnetos the engine will keep running with no battery or alternator at all. The engine can even be hand-propped to start, if you know what you're doing.

  • @rescue270

@@abel4776 Yep. They are simpler and therefore more reliable, but even they are not infallable. A geared, liquid-cooled, electronically managed turbodiesel engine turning at 4500 rpm is going to be more expensive, cost more to maintain and repair, require more maintenance, and will not last as long as a Continental O-470. I don't care how old the technology may be, they're built like tanks and everything about them has been designed from the beginning to be aircraft engines with durability and safety as the main focus, rather than economy. They were never high-strung sportscar engines. They are more like high performance tractor engines. GenAv R&D is going the wrong direction. The very thought of flying with a fuel rail with 90 psi fuel waiting spring a leak and spray fuel everywhere is unsettling for me.

@@drewfliesbikes Yes, and they are overpriced as well. My point is ALL new aircraft are way overpriced. While Government safety regulations are DEFINITELY needed, they go so overboard and make things so difficult for new manufacturers, that it is impossible to get new tech in to the mainstream for an affordable price. Think about cars for a moment - You can buy a brand new Ford Escape for under $30k, a new Mercedes E-Class for $75k, a new Range Rover for $150k or a new Bugatti for several million. With cars, there are price points for the masses. But in todays market, there are really only 2 choices in aircraft. Those for the rich and those for the uber rich. I think it's ridiculous that a decent 4 seat plane for under $250k doesn't exist. Just my opinion though.

@@tomi6261I disagree with your assertion that government safety regulations are a significant factor in pricing. Price comes down with volume: the more you make the cheaper each item becomes to produce. Ford sells 300,000 Escapes per year. That 1.5 ecoboost cost $4,000 msrp from the dealer which is less than 1/10 the cost to buy a Rotax 916. None of the cars you mentioned have composite frames which take a lot of man hours to build. The automotive industry has lots of government regulations that grow more strict every year.

@@drewfliesbikes You make a fair point I guess but I do disagree, to some degree. I am curious to know, exactly why do you think that a new O-360 engine, which is 1950's piston technology, cost $70k today? There is no fuel injection and certainly no hi-tech computers onboard. The Ecoboost you mention is "state of the art" technology in engines, and it only costs $4k!? You believe this is strictly volume? How many more engines would Lycoming sell per year if the price were decreased to a reasonable number, like $8k? I bought my first plane only 6 years ago. A decent and perfectly flying 1976 Beech Sundowner with a fresh annual. I paid HALF the price for my plane as I paid for my Mercedes E-Class car. And the car was a Demo with 8k miles on it when I bought it!!!! I would like to blame Bidenomics, but these insane prices started years ago. I guess I am just salty over where the prices have soared to over the last 10 years.

@@tomi6261 I would struggle to come up with an explanation for an O-360 costing $70k. Captive customer I suppose. I hope that Rotax can compete more and force lycoming to lower their prices. I recall something about Diamond trying to use a Mercedes engine but seems like that didn't work out too well.

And affordable too! Only half a million! Can't wait to place my order. Given that the average Tesla car has more technology and the average internal combustion car has triple the power at 1/10th the cost, this thing is a bargain! There's virtually no excuse as to why these planes cost so much, other than the rich like it that way so the sky belongs to them.
