For russia, it meant losing 25% of its land, 50% of its population.Having two superpowers is always better than a unipolar world. The rise of communism is inevitable. That's mainly the reason the Soviet Union fell, but he is by no means a bad guy. I can recommend oversimplifieds video regarding that topic, if you are interested! The USSR might as well have been a landlocked country. The only practical ocean access they have, is through NATO controlled chokepoints, of Turkey, and Denmark. Sure they've got Vladivostok in the far east, but even that port ices up in the winter, and it is way far away from the main population centers of the Soviet Union.
