For russia, it meant losing 25% of its land, 50% of its population.Having two superpowers is always better than a unipolar world. The rise of communism is inevitable. Capitalism will eventually fall.

    Imagine an alternate timeline where someone in kazakhstan rises to power and goes full *kid who stays in a zoom call after the teacher leaves* and fixes the soviet union , then refills its ranks by giving more autonomy to different of its own provinces or other administrative regions, then proclaims them SSRs. Russia is the country that birthed the USSR, they're the country that forced other soviet states into the USSR and when they could no longer forcibly hold states in it, they left, and once Russia was all that was left, besides Kazakhstan, what was the point in calling themselves anything other....than Russia?

    The USSR might as well have been a landlocked country. The only practical ocean access they have, is through NATO controlled chokepoints, of Turkey, and Denmark. Sure they've got Vladivostok in the far east, but even that port ices up in the winter, and it is way far away from the main population centers of the Soviet Union.
