Thankyou so much for this brilliant commentary. I think The Souvenir is an amazing film, I have watched it 3 times and every time I find something new. The two leads Tom Burke ( always outstanding) and Honor Swindon Berne are incredibly talented. I don’t understand why the film and the stars weren’t given more recognition. Maybe the film was a bit too intellectual for some people. Thankyou so much for your insight 👏👏🌟🌟

Thanks so much for watching it! I'm glad you enjoyed The Souvenir; I'm excited to see part II soon and find out how it interplays with this film. As for the reception of the movie... as someone who loves it, it is very, very slow, has unclear stakes and revolves around a very delicate characterisation of a pretty unlikable central character. With all of that in mind, I think it did pretty well! (And indeed, it's by far the most well seen of Hogg's films.) There's also I think an air of 'self-indulgence' about the film; I think that's on purpose, and tbh I'd rather have this kind of emotionally probing, aware self-indulgence than, say, brand-focused fanservice ala MCU (because isn't that a kind of self-indulgence too?). Still, I can understand why that turns people off.

The great critic Mark Kermode described the film as pages torn out of a diary. I love that description. It feels like memories I've never had. Your video also helped me identify some of the things I love about this movie. Couldn't put my finger on it when I first saw it. Im gonna check out Hoggs other work now

It felt so authentic that I had to stop watching it several times. Your essay was brilliant and brought out all the thoughts I had and even created new ones that I did not really delve into when I first watched this. I cannot wait to see more of your videos! Watching your description of the movie helps a lot! I saw it at a local Film Festival and the sound was horrible, and I love the movie absolutely tired with a strong headache just from trying to understand what's going on. Hearing you change my perspective a bit

Came across your review while contemplating whether or not to see Souvenir 2 not having seen the first film. Some have even suggested the benefits of seeing number 2 before number 1. Loved your review: criminal that it hasn't received tons of thumbs up.

it's so wonderful. i think most people who see it love it, but not many have seen it (or not enough). and about 20% absolutely hate it, no inbetweens!
