The Sound and Music of Hyper Light Drifter

In this 2017 GDC session, Heart Machine's Akash Thakkar and musician Rich Vreeland share a behind-the-scenes look at the audio design of Hyper Light Drifter. Along the way, you can learn how creators of all disciplines can garner massive emotional impact through the audio in their next game.
GDC talks cover a range of developmental topics including game design, programming, audio, visual arts, business management, production, online games, and much more. We post a fresh GDC video every weekday. Subscribe to the channel to stay on top of regular updates, and check out GDC Vault for thousands of more in-depth talks from our archives.

Absolutely LOVED you guys' work on the game. I saw you in a few other videos about your work on Hyper Light Drifter and really dig your positive energy. Your love for your craft not only shows in the quality of your work, but your enthusiasm when speaking about it. Looking forward to what you're doing in the future!

great job. love how that atonal, symmetrical scale approach works so well in the background. because it is something that can get quite annoying (as mentioned in this one example you guys couldn't stand anymore, after listening to it again and again) when you focus on. but sets a perfect background: warm, yet unsettling.

Love anything Disasterpiece does. The 'Fez' soundtrack is sublime, and 'It Follows' had one of the best horror soundtracks of this generation. In my humble opinion.

28:20 love this chord progression so much. The first time I watched the trailer for the game and heard it I knew I had to play this game. Sound design and music have always sort of been the key to my heart for video games.

The sound design and music for this game go beyond so many other titles. It's great to see into the creative process, and it's no surprise that both Akash and Rich came to this project with such integrity and passion.

Chords in the theme - Bb+E / Db+Ab/ Bb7#5#9. Often, when i'm writing, beauty like this disappears amongst the clutching for ideas. Well done Alex for spotting it in amidst all the sketches. It's perfect.

hey Rich, here's a thought, you could try running off a tape player like you wanted, but when you re-digitize it run it through something like Ableton Live, I remember it having a feature that can identify the rhythm and tempo of the music and then you can re-sync it with other tracks while keeping the sound effect.

That is not what he is talking about. He is saying that if you switch abuptly between two tracks with varying pitch modulation, you'll hear audible phasing (if it is a fade between two tracks), or a pitch jump and ISP (if instantaneous). He could have implemented it in post by creating a tape saturation emulation for whatever audio engine they used but it's not something you can do at ground level without causing yourself more headaches.

Wow, the first piano piece on 7:40 is actually so good shame it’s not somewhere in the game - could’ve made some piano-synth transitions between this and Corruption/Chimera, where synths use it’s first chords But i suppose it was a heavy competition between the tracks to take places in the game ;) Anyways cheers to Rich and Akash - HLD ost is my favourite piece of game music alongside with Austin Wintory’s Banner Saga I was very surprised musically after Panacea trailer (release one) - it instantly became special for me and whole thing only grew more important/inspiring for my own musical journey later on Peace and love to all humanzz, especially to ones crafting beauty ❤️🖤
