I think Ralph was phoned by Jackie jr but said nothing and that jackie then phoned Tony in his last plea for release. Ralph needed to know Tony didn't approve and then Ralph knew what to do. The idea Tony would've been the first guy to call is ridiculous.

Common misconception is that Vito shot Jackie in the back of the head. But if you look closely, Vito's gun doesn't cycle when shot and doesn't have any blowback. This is in fact his son's cap gun that Vito used to attract Jackie's attention to tell him that Ralf and Tony agreed to give him a pass. But Jackie got scared, tripped over his own foot, fell face down into a snowdrift and subsequently drowned in three inches of snow

It was deliberately done like that. The writers hated Jackie, the character and his arc. He was stupid, arrogant and also expendable. So they made his death exactly like a bad 70's crime show. Vito appears out of nowhere, the close up of the gun shows it's a toy replica, Jackie just falls straight into the only drift of snow on the street. Vito just toddles back into the get away car. It is a death scene straight out of an episode of Columbo or McMillan and wife.

I'm another disappointed with Jackie Jr's death, I wanted at least a well-done chapter in which the events that led to his death were properly prepared

Vito is a pretty strong dude, though you got to hand it to him. There was literally zero visible recoil when he shot that firearm. He even managed to keep the slide from moving at all! True professional. He absorbed that recoil better than he absorbed all those guys in the club.

I like how he passed the big Vito without noticing him... just a shot before that he was walking the practically empty street, and all of a sudden big Vito popped into existence, and then the car popped into existence, while Jackie fell into a pile of show covered in blood. Whole pile of snow bloody as if he was shot with a elephant rifle. Yet it all works in a cut. Amazing show.

I always wondered how Vito was able to sneak up behind Jackie Jr? The answer was revealed later in the show, showing Vito was "light in the loafers".

I always thought the chess game was the perfect metaphor for Jackie Jr. His whole life was like that chess game. Anytime he encountered something hard, he just gave up - and not just give up, but flip the middle finger at life. Can't handle Med School? Quits and pursues mob life. Can't handle being faithful to Meadow? Decides to see who-was on the side. Can't handle being low on the mob totem pole? Tries something really dumb (robbing the card game) to jump the line. Like Omar said, he should've played things out - persevered, or at least just tried a different but intelligent approach to his goal. No Med school? Try business school or something easier. Don't cheat on Meadow - let her down gently and with respect. Don't try jumping the line in mob life - keep your head, be a reliable peon for a few years, work your way up. He didn't do any of this - Instead, he'd just give up and do something stupid to fuck everything up. Very allegorical.

Was walking slower in the same direction than Jackie, Jackie on one side, Vito on the sidewalk... As Jackie was behind he didn't recognize Vito. When Jackie got past him and close to the car he just power-walked and clipped the guy.

This is one of the most implausible murders in the series. Broad daylight, middle of the street and the parade float is somehow stealthier than Solid Snake.

Love how Michael K. Williams summarizes Jackie Jr.'s entire problem in life in a subtle way. "... you should have played it out. That's the only way you're gonna learn." Jackie Jr. never committed to anything in the show, he was always looking out for the next, better opportunity, but in doing so, he always ignored life's lessons until it was too late.

What about The two kids from Baltimore at the semi hijack? The one in the red jersey is Bodie.

Tony out-manoeuvring Ralphy at every turn is brilliant. Ralphy is desperately trying to manipulate Tony to give the order so it doesn't come back to him but Tony is having none of it.

These are some of the most interesting scenes in the whole series, the way he plays his position, protects himself no matter what the outcome is and even leans Ralf into having Jackie Jr killed.

@Brett Mitchell Exactly. It's sort of like the Tony B thing, except Tony's love is for Jackie's already deceased father: Tony doesn't really want to do it, but he knows what needs to be done. He can't have this kid coming to a summer BBQ with Christopher and Furio! But he can pin the responsibility on Ralph, who he knows gave Jackie Jr. a gun, told him the Feech card game story and did a million other things to undermine Tony's attempts to keep the kid out of the life. And on some level, Ralph knows he is partly responsible too, which is one of the reasons he'd like the decision to be made by Tony.

02:54 - It’s a testament to this show’s high-quality writing that, in just a short scene, one gets a real sense of what the host/father is like, what his daughter is like, how they relate to each other, his general outlook in life, the values he is trying to impart in her… Of course, having the late, great Michael K. Williams play said father goes a long way when it comes to bringing the script to life, but credit where credit is due: it’s good on the screen because it was good on the page first.

The only thing more unrealistic than that gun is Vito being able to sneak up behind a guy….

Yes, but it was still Ralph's lesson to learn. Tony rubbed his nose in it, but Ralph pushed hard to be captain and inherited Jackie Jr by dint of being with Rosalie. What's interesting is how much protocol weighs on Ralph. He actually respected the rules as much as Tony demands of others, but breaks when applied to him

They weren't playing mind games. Tony was telling him he had to whack Jackie Jr., and Ralph was trying to do everything he could to not. They both knew what to do. This was nothing more than Ralph begging for an out.

That scene was so far fetched…I mean how does a 400 lb guy just mysteriously appear behind you…there must have been a spawn portal.

The cops could have shown up, taken DNA evidence, and solved the crime in the time it took Vito to get in the car.

I liked the way Tony was subtle the way he "ordered" Ralph to put the hit on Jackie Jr. This show had some great writing.

I think Tony legit didnt want Ralphie to put the hit on Jackie .Jr. But instead wanted Ralphie to look weak as a capo, by giving Jackie a pass after shooting a made man.

RALPHIE. Jackie also contacted Tony DIRECTLY (1:58), and Ralphie knew it. One small conversation between the two about how or what drove Jackie to rob the card game in the first place and, Ralphies the one who'd be sleeping with the fishes. Who do you think had more to lose ?

The most devastating aspect about this scene is the fact that due to death of Jackie jr, everything that his father did was in vain. A former mob boss who's had propably hundreds of men killed and has robbed tens of millions of dollars, and all that's left from that legacy is his widow Rosalie. So that's that for providing for your family to ensure better future for them.

lol that's one of the major overarching plot points of The Sopranos. The only ones that ended up with something in the end were the ones that got out of the game early on, like Little Carmine and Beansie. Everyone else got murdered or imprisoned.

@@KoH4711 I might be wrong but it seems obvious Jackie jr reached out to Ralph "before" he did to Tony. Ralph therefore tried to get Tony's approval for giving him a pass, whilst denying he's even been contacted. So Jackie jr took his last ditch attempt at survival calling Tony because he's already given his location up to Ralph.

One thing I like about Jackie's last scene is the difference between Matush and him being the getaway drivers in the botched robbery (Matush leaving at the first shot and Jackie stealing the car and leaving Dino to die) versus a professional driver. Vito was the perfect example for this. People have pointed out how slow he was to get into the car, and that's the point. It shows that a professional driver will have the total patience to wait for even a hobbling obese man to get completely in the car, whereas a low-level driver will be too panicked under pressure and will leave his crew. A professional also knows to drive away slowly, since screeching tires and traffic violations draw even more attention.

That's a great point. Anthony Capo, who was a member later turned informant for the Jersey Mob, said something similar on his first hit (he was the driver). Vinny Ocean ordered him to drive the getaway car, but not drive away too fast or too slow either.

Uncle junior and Tony's conversation was hilarious at the end. Calling Jackie Jr a dumb f--k, and Tony calling stupidity a learning disorder. Classic!

Jesus, even rewatching a scene like this the implication Tony wants Ralphy to kill him is crazy, no idea how I didn’t pick it up on the first watch, just shows how incredible the dialogue is.

You gotta love Tony for trying to pull a slick move on Ralpie by trying to put the idea of giving Jackie a pass in his head. He hated Ralph and wanted him to give Jackie a pass just so he would be disrespected by everyone. He was always trying to humiliate and kill Ralphie slowly.

Tony was pissed off because he was forced to give the capo position to Ralphie to reduce tension between them yet Ralph wasn't assuming responsibility for his actions that drove Jackie to his downfall. I dont think Tony was trying to humillate him at least at this point in the story, he was rushing him to make a decision.

Idk if he had those sorts of intentions. I wouldnt put it past him...but you cant forget how close Jackie was to everyone. Meadow was dating him for a time, Ralph was with his mother, all the guys worked with his dad...etc. I could legit see Tony going easy on him.

Tony was a real friend to Jackie Aprile..... he did the best thing anyone could ever do for him..... he made sure that his kid got the one thing that poor Jackie himself couldn't get ...... a proper Mafia death.... He even was kind enough to allow Jackie Jr to keep his face intact so his mudda could give him an open kesket at the funeral..... a true friend indeed....

1:54 This part is especially important, he was basically telling Jackie that his dead father's name had only so much weight whereas Johnny Soprano was alive and well when Tony and his current men robbed that card game.

The writers purposely made his death as stupid as possible because they hated the character Jackie Jr (not the actor).

When Jackie walked by Vito he didn’t worry because he thought it was just Gino on his way to the bakery.

Incredible scene between T and Ralph. How Tony put the responsibility to him as it was hia best friends son that he promised to take care of. Then the symbolism of the last chess game. Jackie, a pawn in the world of Cosa Nostra, tried to move two spots when he couldn't, which is exactly what he did in the card game robbery. Wanted to skip ahead to get made quickly... The rest is history.

Vito had the makings of a varsity athlete Phil loved him like a bodybuilder.

"See if you can figure out the difference." Tony handing Jackie a layup and he still couldn't nail it. The difference was that nobody got hurt and his father was still alive to protect him.

That first conversation felt really well done
