I was lucky to have listened to one of Christa Ludwig's last concerts in Bochum in the 90' and I still remember the richness of her performance: in german you say "Eine Sternstunde"!

Ludwig was a perfect teacher aggressively getting to the problem and not playing towards emotional imageries or nonsense. This is a total on the body workshop inside technical focus. The singer veered many times away from the advice fighting the oo vowel and the piano then crescendo, the opening of the constants and volume… through Ludwig’s chasing she finally got it closer in line. It’s hard work and not just about the notes.

It is essential to rehearse songs with native speakers who know how to use the language. Unfortunately, one often hears little feeling for the language, but only an emphasis on the music, which, however, tends to be on the words, especially in songs. Ludwig, always a master of correct. Ludwig, a master of correct pronunciation, rightly attaches great importance to this.

Fantastica. Quanto mi piacerebbe essere a quel livello ( dell'allieva) e pensare sopratutto all'interpretazione! Comunque che fatica, io sarei già finita sotto il pianoforte dopo i primi cinque minuti :))

Hsin-Mei Chang is a pure lyric soprano. She should not think that she can become a Spinto at all cause she never will. What she should do is developed her low register and middle voice. Sopranos need strong chest voice too! Christa is a fabulous teacher!

The coaching Frau Ludwig is forced to do here should have been done BEFORE meeting her: translating meticulously, working on the specific german pronounciation and learning the dynamics. The student is clearly not aware of who is Christa Ludwig...

Woher soll es also kommen?
