The Solar Cycle

Although it may look unchanging from the ground, the sun actually has a long-term pattern of change called the sunspot cycle. During one cycle the number of sunspots, and solar activity, increases and then decreases again. This process is driven by the flipping of the sun's poles.

    Thank you! This presentation is excellent. Another 11 years have passed and we are in the midst of the 25th cycle, which has significantly improved radio wave propagation across HF bands, resulting in excellent global radio contacts but also causing flares, CMEs, and blackouts. Doron, 4X4XM

    The current cycle peak, which happened in 2012, was rather weak this time around. From a ham radio operator's perspective I can say it has resulted in a lower instance of radio wave propagation across the RF spectrum. This year in particular hasn't been so great in terms of producing reliable radio contacts. The beginning of this year (2015) started off fantastic but the mid part of the year waned considerably but fortunately has increased towards the end of 2015. Unfortunately we're headed towards the low end of the cycle, which means radio propagation (contacts) will only worsen until the current cycle bottoms out and begins to come back up again. It's a bummer when you have to wait for the next cycle to return :>\

    1:30 in. Magnetic fields power solar flares... That's not entirely accurate. Sunspots are magnetic regions. Penumbra. Those are either positive or negative. Their magnetism reflects the nature of the plasma. Proton rich plasma, positive ions and protons. Or. Electron rich plasma, negative ions and electrons. Attracted to opposite charges because their behavior manifests in the magnetic fields. But the power of the magnetic fields of sunspot umbra is a byproduct of the flows of energetic particles that also generates the x-ray light we see, looking at umbras. Flares occur when the magnetic fields created by the charged particles flowing within those bidirectional umbral flows become imbalanced and attraction overcomes repulsion which, either causes the umbra to pinch and discharge to itself? Or contacts an adjacent umbral flow and they both discharge. Like a fork in an electrical socket. The magnetic fields don't flash and shock you. The electrons do! That's important as it relates to cosmology, and what stars actually are. Plasma Physics! Let's continue. ✌

    2:50 in. Next cycle. 25 That one's gonna be very similar to this one. 24. The sun's combined polar magnetic field strength determine that. Stanford's Solar Polar Observatory publishes that data publicly. Historically, odd numbered sunspot cycles are just a bit more energetic than the previous even numbered cycle. Today, May 2020, as we enter this next sunspot max, those fields are as almost as powerful as the beginning of sunspot cycle 24. Therefore, this sunspot cycle will probably be almost indiscernible from the last, in numbers of spots and flares. Again with *most* but not all flares occurring outside the 1/3 of the sun we have a direct line of sight to. Often right before they crest into view and/or after they crest the western limb. Now cycle 26? That one's the charm. Let's hope it's not a dud because if it is? Well... You'll figure it out...;)

    Could this have a more direct correlation to what some consider "climate change" versus the greenhouse effect? Or is this contributing to the perceived greenhouse effect?

  • @denononohardcore2

    @denononohardcore2

    4 жыл бұрын

    Bingo. From what I understand "climate change" is very real and happening, it just is not brought on by human C02 emissions. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is FINALLY going to add some updates to the 2022 report that includes Sun activity and its affects on the weather, particularly the affects of "solar forcing". The Suns activity is not going to be the only factor in "climate change". Our magnetosphere is reducing in strength at a increasing rate, this is potentially disastrous. This has not happened for 12,000 or so years and adds a factor we humans have no data on. We can make well educated guesses though, it is not good news. Solar forcing information can be found here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pHmL0bKzkafTf6Q.html&feature=emb_title
