A note you can add to your improvising when you want to add that sexy romantic feel. ;)

Hi everyone, paul haywood here. Welcome to the channel, this is where i upload saxophone lessons to help you be the best sax player you can be.
In this video i'm going to show you what we could call the "smooth note" or even "romantic note". We'll look at what it is, how you can find it in every key and when and how to use it in your playing. This is a great sound to know about which will add extra colour and emotion to your playing.
Stick around till the end of the video where i'll do some extra improvising to demonstate how this addition sounds and i'll leave some empty backing track for you guys to practice over.
So this smooth note has it's own character and colour.
So if we are playing over a minor chord or key and using a minor pentatonic scale as the basic notes to improvise with, we add this in and get that smooth or romantic sound.
In a static improvising context (improvising over one key or chord) the pentatonics are a great place to start and they are probably the most common used scale in funk, pop , smooth jazz and many other styles of music. I like to think of adding in specific notes to add specific flavours, moods or colours.
We've recentlyt looked at the "funk note" (link in the description) and we'll look at the "blues note" in an upcoming video. With all of these it's important to know the numbers of the note we are adding so we can apply it to any key we need to play in.
This smooth note is the 9th. Thats the same as the second note of the major scale but we call it the 9th bacause of how chords are constructed. 123456789, the F#, jump down an octave to F#, the second note, it works in every octave anyway
When ever anyone including myself talks in numbers about notes or scales or phrases, those numbers relate to the major scale. it's like a music theory constant that everything can relate back to.
So whatever key you are playing in you play the 9th or second note of the major scale of that key. So for example we're in the key of Concert G minor, thats Eminor for us on alto and A minor for Tenor sax. So we've got E major scale to find our 9th from. E-E,F# F#,E-E,F# see 2nd note and 9th are the same. We can also try and remember that the 9th is just a tone (or two semitones) above the root. So start from the root and go up two semitones, which is one whole tone, and there is your 9th. Using one of those 2 methods, you should now be able to find it in any key.
Playing in B minor? whats the 9th? (major scale technique) (or two semitones up from root)
PLaying in Eb minor? whats the 9th? (major scale technique) (or two semitones up from root)
Got it? So get started by adding this note in to your playing as an addition to your minor pentatonic scales. The ninth is already present in a lot of other scales and you should still think of it as having it's own character in those situations, but because the minor pent doesn't have it already it really pops out when you add it in that context.
OK so no matter what key you're in, if your minor pentatonic scale is working nicely, try adding in this extra note to get that smooth or romantic sound. So you'll be adding in the 9th of whatever key your playing in.
I'm going to finish up by playing a little demo improvisation and i'll leave the backing track playing so you can use that to practice this idea as much as you want.

It's a great stepping stone from pentatonic improv to the more advanced concepts too. Getting to know the sounds and theory a bit deeper. :)

Hey Paul, another great video! I just love a minor 9th. It's like an outstanding pop of intense color. YUM. On piano/ keys, i love a Gm9. On sax, i'm loving C and Bb. I know... weird, but hey, thanks for your inspiration.

Hey DC. Thanks. It really is a great sound isn't it. I love the impressionist composers when they were adding in all the extended lush harmony. Theres definately certain keys and scales/arpeggios on the sax that have their own sound and weight. I've recently been having fun experimenting with overtones again after a long break. Bb and C are my favourites to build off.

This is excellent stuff. One thing that I would really like to see you do is a video with you playing a series of phrases for people to practice listening to, using the slowdown feature on KZread. I have found that it is really great for developing my improvising style. So maybe you could just know out maybe 25 phrases, starting with the very simply (maybe 6 notes) up to complex with a phrase lasting several bars. I wouldn't use a backing track, just you on sax so it is nice and clear. Or maybe you could just play by yourself for the first half of the video then use the phrases with a backing track. There are so few videos on you tube that use this approach. Thanks, Peter

Liked and subscribed! Nice approach Paul! I have always been requesting music educators to focus on this part of ear development. This far more useful than learning licks. The ability for the learner to internalize the “sound” of a concept is the best way to learn and bring those concepts to their playing. I can suggest a couple of concepts for future videos. First, a simper one, the Dorian mode has a wonderful raised 6th that sounds really nice. But I find that it’s use in blues is far more interesting than in minor keys! So say we are playing a blues in C. That Dorian note would be A, and no matter if one was improvising on the C blues (minor tonality) or the C major blues, that A sounds so funky and hip! I love it and I use it quite often. Then, the stuff that I’d really love to see and better understand, or rather “feel” and internalize, is a bit on the side of jazz. I always wanted to grasp the concept and sound of improvising using the tri-tone sub approach, typically in dominant chords. There are tons of videos here about licks and what not, but licks isn’t the way to go about it. It’s this approach of how that sounds like, the feel of it, that is where it’s at! So I will be thrilled to see a video on that. Thanks very much mate

One more thing... What I mean by tri-tone sub is not the use of chord arpeggios of the tri-tone substitute chord, that’s a nice idea but I mean that chord scale and those nice scale runs in that direction.

How do you build the skill of knowing which notes to flirt with. and when to play the smooth note? at end of phrase? connecting phrases? Can you demo a scale workout building notes that go together ?

Ah, that's quite a massive subject. I'd recomend searching on here and checking out videos that others have already posted. Main thing is if your mouthpiece has a smaller tip opening you will need a harder reed if you have a larger tip opening. Start from a medium strength, soak it well, play it in. then guage if it's too hard or soft and try a harder or softer reed. Also read the descriptions of the reeds on sites like: sax . co . uk and try ones which sound like they have a chance of being the type you might like. There is such a huge range out there it really is trial and error.
