Yes indeed, they chose the option to memorise their repertoire, first to be closer to each other and feeling the same vibes through music. Later, as they started progressively having sight problems, learning by memory became necessary, reinforced by the fact they weren’t wearing glasses at all. I can imagine how aware they were about presenting themselves as one single ensemble, without any music in front of them, reaching a high level of transcendence. That’s why the Smetana Quartet is unique in the history of chamber music. By repertoire, I mean the one for quartet, they used to wear glasses for pieces requiring more than four musicians, like the Dvořák String Sextet Op.48 and Piano Quintet Op.81
A TRUE and Beuatiful SQ. One of those music works whose listening is mandatory for every lover of the Noble Art of String Quartets. Beautiful interpretation too! Many thanks for this! ❤
Truly a Masterpiece! The sustained E at 25:47 constitutes the tinnitus in his life, which agonoized him until the grave..

I purchased this particular ensemble playing this beautiful work on the Supraphone label in 1965. Forty three years later I got the first warning of tinnitus and, thanks to Smetana, I knew what it was. Fortunately, unlike him, I'm not professionally involved in music. So the sense of loss, whilst often distressing, has not been as overwhelming as it would have been for this unfortunate man of genius. And the upside is that I've been able to re-educate my ears even more towards more intimate and introspective musical forms, with string quartets right at the top of my appreciation list.

The irony was that Škampa ended up suffering from tinitus too, with other members possibly as well but not sure.
How extraordinary to be playing the entire piece from memory!
legendary quartet.. so good at Mozart too... one of the best quartets of all time
Smetana is my favourite composer, and here I find the best interpretation of his music and personna. Thank you very much.
amazing upload. I was so lucky to meet skampa and have lessons with him in Fiesole...amazing musician and fun person. Big love for life he had and incredible experiences. What an incredible age string quartet got with quartetto italiano, BOrodin, Alban Berg, Amadeus, Emerson. Their "old school" sound will be my favourite anytime.
Wonderful music. I've long felt Smetana, particularly in this Quartet, is speaking directly to me reminding me of my roots. The performing artists even look like relatives.
The way the second violin moves his eyebrows is fantastic !
Incredible! I think this is my favorite version of one of my favorite string quartets. True life making true music!.. ( so I think if you play this quartet with sheet music after listen this you have no shame!!! ;)
Todo completamente de memoria! Excelente, de verdad!
Nadherna hudba, uzasne provedeni vsech nastroju, az mrazi, jaka krasna skladba!
de memoria? pensé que los únicos capaces de esos eran mis héroes del Quartetto italiano Bravo!!

These two quartets were both legends of their times and also respected each other highly. Smetanas started to use music only in their last years. They played by heart pretty much everything before.
String Quartet No. 1 in E minor. Its autobiographical nature is made explicit in the finale, which is interrupted by a piercing shriek on high violin - symbolizing the ringing that went through Smetana's head as he was losing his hearing. By early 1884 Smetana's illness had reached its tragic final stage. He could no longer write music and slipped into dementia with occasionally violent episodes. A gala concert and banquet celebrating his 60th birthday had to take place without him. In April he was admitted to an asylum in Prague, where he died a few weeks later

Lubomír Kostecký, best quartet 2nd violinist in the game.
When your chamber coach suggests you play this, you know they think highly of you as a violist.

Torchlight 2? Anyone? Just me? Ok. What a fantastic theme
Bedřich Smetana's "From My Life" is a stunning string quartet that showcases the composer's ability to capture the essence of the human experience through music. This deeply personal work is a reflection of Smetana's own life, and it offers a profound glimpse into the joys, sorrows, and challenges of the human journey.
Presioso. Masha danki!
Wow!It's amazing ! Very beautiful quarter, perfect version of performade

I assume you are a millennial and I appreciate the fact you are listening to good music...however..this is NOT a song. It is a "piece of music". A song is a piece of music for voice. Music education has taken a dreadful fall in the USA. Had you sung in choir a few times a week in grade school or played in band, you would have been made aware of the correct terms for music.
Where was this filmed? It’s beautiful.
