Mike is my favorite bodybuilder of all time, not because of some silly shit like "he was underrated and should've been mr olympia" but simply because he was different from anyother, he was unique, from his hair and mustache to his training and profession, nobody can take that away, the dude stood out.

Love the format, exposing the community to the legends gives us role models we never knew we needed.
Notice that both platz and Mentzer both preached long rest periods. I really enjoy listening to Mentzer talk, his logical thinking is definitely a step above the average man. Whether the conclusions are or are not accurate doesn’t matter. He had pretty good reasoning for what little exercise science existed at the time compared to today. RIP

mentzer wasn't sold to money or limelight, he understood the importance of having a full life and not just bodybuilding, this is a personal opinion as I don't know very well about him but maybe he knew his life was short and he made himself a legend in that time period, as he said "quality over quantity"
yeah mike mentzer is the goat, his training principles really make sense especially for people who don't have as much time to go to the gym
I could listen to Mentzer all day. He makes perfect sense to me and his physique was incredible
Frank Zane has inspired me to go through a lot of more education than I would without knowing about his academic endeavours. Mentzer is totally underrated. Platz is a complete utter legend and Aaaahnold was top tier politician from the day he left the classroom
Great to see the channel expanding. Everyone knows you're well able at making videos to make people laugh but it's great to get some real history that's not covered much elsewhere. Love it man
My only issue with the ideas of some of these bodybuilders is that most likely none of it applies to the average person that is not using PEDs. It's an interesting subject, but imo it only emphasizes how much PEDs are the biggest factor when it comes to professional bodybuilding.
@RDS_Armwrestling
Жыл бұрын
Genetics are the biggest factor in professional bodybuilding. Some people take PEDs and look like they don't even lift, other people don't even lift and look like they're on PEDs. Your base genetics and how you respond to PEDs will have a big impact in how you do in pro bodybuilding - taking PEDs alone won't make you Mr Olympia. Look at young Phil Heath when he used to play basketball, look at young Ronnie Coleman when he was natural, look at Keone Pearson from even a few years ago (he says he was natural right up until maybe 2 years ago yet looked like he was using for years) as just a few examples
@stanclips8227

PED’s or not, it’s the same principles. The numbers may not always be the same but the formula always is. Like the guy above me said, genetics are by far the biggest factor in competitive bodybuilding, not steroids.
What about Nasser El Sonbaty, didn’t he speak 7 languages? His nickname was “the professor”.

yo back guy, i really liked this type of video!
Appart from not getting to the Olympia, John Meadows would fit perfectly with the high intensity intelectual bodybuilders. And of course Dorian Yates as well
Props for the very informative and educating video and for busting misconceptions about the sport. One thing I would like to note is that we currently have a larger pool of data and research in a lot of the topics covered in this video, for example the most effective number of reps in reserve for hypertrophy training and we shouldn't go solely by what worked for others in the past, even if we are talking about respectable people in the space, like Mike Mentzer. The key takeaway is to start focusing on the real research on strength training and start putting aside all the bro-science (aka anecdotal evidence, i.e. non-evidence) that is plaguing the field. I would like to believe that this is a message that people like Mr. Mentzer would endorse.
Mike M always the true man to his craft, the one to find out the TRUTH about bodybuilding without people training every day for 2-3h thinking thats the only way.
Thanks for the video, Back Guy. Remember to train hard and eat well and that's all you need to grow muscle.

Mike Heavy Duty Mentzer
Man in his mid 30’s: “but if I don’t train every day, what am I going to do with my time?” Mike: why sir, I might suggest a number of things for your consideration; read a novel or philosophy book by Ayn Rand, learn the laws of logic, translate what you had merely sensed about the nature of existence into an explicitly verbalized philosophy of life. You might even study neuroanatomy and physiology or take up a trade, enroll in a class, go to the movies, take walks in the park, you might even learn about the true nature of romantic love, in short you might seek to actualize your human stature

Everytime I squat, I always hear platz in the back of my mind say "5 more".
Mentzer was the goat - anything more than 1-2 sets and you're simply wasting your time creating more muscle damage than required for the same if not lesser results.

Very nice informative video, keep it up
Mentzer is mine all time favourite!
I workout my upper body intensly for a hour once a week usually, and I have an exellent figure. I'm just relived that all those times I've beaten myself up for not doing more reps or working out for more days, that There was really nothing to worry about. Now the work nut in me can rest.
Great Video!

Mike Mentzer deserved that 1980 Mr Olympia way more than Arnold Schwarzenegger, fortunately his disciple Dorian Yates won the Mr. Olympia title six consecutive times from 1992 to 1997 and proved Mike's methods worked

Mario Rios needs to look at this please 😭😭
I don't know whether his philosophy or teachings work or not ! But there is no doubt in my mind about one thing , the dude had a godly physique and passionate knowledge about bodybuilding . And no sane person can tell me that he didn't deserve to win the Olympia of 1980 ! R.I.P. ❤️❤️
Platz has the best legs of all time. There is nothing arguable about it
Mike was so weak mentally! he quit right away after he lost..he should have trained his mind with his ‘high intensity training’ program😂😂😂
Mike did actually win a Mr Olympia in 1979 as you wrongly stated and he is the only bodybuilder to get a perfect score at the Mr Olympia competition. Though what intrigues me is he trained probably 3 times a week leading up to Mr Olympia as he has stated in other material. Stating that he even overtrained because he was overthinking if what he was doing was enough. So even though he says gym once or twice per week to us. I would take it with a grain of salt.

For naturals, I'd say Mike's style is probably better than Arnold's I.e. fewer sets but very difficult is better than more sets that are very difficult. Naturals can only recover from a certain amount of volume (individuals vary) so it's better to err on the side of less than more.
Mentzer and HIT is having a resurgance here in yt meathead circles
Body smart
I would do Mikes program but I have to wait 45 minutes for a bench
>Arnold Schwarzenegger >Smart Pick one.
I've been training using Alfred and Mentzer teachings, I passed from a 5 day PPL-UL rutine to a PPL frequency 1 and now to a 2 full body and 1 isolation where i followed the same principle: I train 1-2 set per exercise per muscle group per workout (2 total in the week for chest, back and the like, the residual of compounds and 1 isolation for small like biceps) and i take each set to failure within 6-8 rep range. Every workout I progress, extra reps or more weight. Only thing is that my legs, specially femoral, doesnt really recover, which is natural given they are such big muscle groups, so I'm thinking about giving them freq 1.5 as in one week doing my 2 sets and another 1 just doing light work for recovery or none.
@gymzofrenico

Though, my exercise selection is different: theres some stuff they are outdated, and the rest time within sets as well. 3 mins or more needed. I also add soleous, tibialis, forearms and so as well to my training, for a complete and anti-injury phisique
@gymzofrenico
Жыл бұрын
Tom Platz was a very smart guy at leg training as well: He knew about neutral hip position squating as the best legs developer and that leg press is no good, something I already came to understand from elongation based hypetrophy and legs anatomy at first, then realise this dude was ahead of its time. I would say he's a genius, but he did skip soleous and tibialis training, which are ideal if you train calves as well, and that he did too many sets and reps.
@Jaschka15
