The SMART Way to PLAN your SWITZERLAND Trip: Choosing destinations

Most of the people do not properly plan their Switzerland trip and end up traveling around instead of actually experiencing the country. It is important to choose the destinations in a way that the itinerary and travel route make sense. With poor planning, you will end up traveling crisscross around Switzerland instead of minimizing your travel time and maximizing your experience at the attractions. It is very common that many visitors try to see everything, which makes them rush from one place to another, sacrificing much on the experience in each place. Thus, it is important to plan with less and enjoy more at each of the places. Sometimes, it also makes more sense to stay more than 1 night in the same place to skip checking out and in again. Staying in the same place allows you to do short excursions to the nearby region. Here, do not do any excursions to places that are very far: e.g. do not travel forth and back from Interlaken to Verzasca and back again. If your trip is short, you can visit less places, minimize the travel time and focus on one region instead. If your trip is long, you want to explore more regions of Switzerland. Also make sure that you plan your trip according to your interests and not what other people have done before. A great practice is to shortlist your destinations by seeing what experiences you can combine in the same place: e.g. in Thun, you can enjoy a beautiful city with a lake and a stunning alpine panorama, while in Zermatt you can see a nice village, get breathtaking views and go for hiking or visiting glaciers.

Two tips I would add ... (for a native Swiss this is beneath notice, but ...) *cost is a major issue in this country*, it is very expensive. 🤑 Providing insider tips on hostels, university lodgings, and their locations is very helpful. Second - for those coming from overseas, train travel is not second nature, so an explanation of when and where to get passes, for how long, and where that can take you, is also very helpful. 🚆Making sense of timetables and differences in fares (eg. train classes etc.) is new to them.

Hi Gaby. Exactly these 2 topics would be covered in 2 separate videos. I really intended here to only focus on how to choose destinations. Car VS train is interesting for an entire video itself. I have traveled a lot around here and the world and I would like to break the myth: is Switzerland really that expensive? We easily forget all the things that are free in here: many attractions do not cost: Tre Castelli of Bellinzona are free, waterfalls can mostly always be visited for free, nature parks are almost all free, caves are cheap to be visited. Expensive are only hotels and restaurants as well as few attractions like JFJ.

For those who come from large countries, Switzerland is small. I was disappointed that I had to eliminate Lugarno from my itinerary because I was in Zurich and Lugarno is all the way down the south. An acquaintance told me that it is only one hour by train. I spent a day in Lugarno, including the train trip. I'm so glad I found that out. I had a lovely day in Lugarno. I had lunch and dinner there and made it back to Zurich by the evening.

I just came back from a trip to Europe and lots of Switzerland a month ago. It was fantastic and I agree with almost everything you said in this video. I had 15 nights and spent three in each destination, Zurich, St Moritz, Zermatt, Lausanne and Interlaken. Sometimes you can even make the journey part of the adventure so for example I took the Bernina Express from Zurich (Chur) to St Moritz and then the Glacier Express from St Moritz to Zermatt.

I love your videos! I appreciate seeing places 'off the beaten path', and a bit more budget-friendly. We went to Switzerland for the first time last fall (the Berner Oberland, of course LOL), and returned in the spring (long weekend in Murren). We're headed back this winter (this time to Saas Fee with a day trip to Zermatt); we're simply in love with your country. So much to do and see, and always a guaranteed magical time. It rained nearly every day during our long weekend in spring, and we STILL had so much fun! This map is great, too. Thank you for your content! It's something a bit different than other Swiss content makers are doing, and you're my fav. ;) Thank you!

My sister and I were recently in Switzerland back in early May. I planned out our itinerary for the 6 full days we were going to be there. Despite not being able to get out to Zermatt, we did everything that was planned using Zurich as our base. The furthest we ventured out from Zurich was to Gruyeres for the cheese festival.

Hi Joseph. Wow, you went to the cheese festival! How was it? I would love to attend next time. Was it very crowded? Zermatt is not a good place to be visited if Zürich is your base. But maybe from Bern or Spiez, Zermatt might be quite easier to be reached. Hope you had a great holiday!

@@DjemoGraphic Yep! My sister and I went to the cheese festival. We were VERY lucky with the weather that Sunday as it was sunny and a bit warm. The festival was great! We got to see cheese being made and there were traditional Alpine horn performances. As for the crowds - yes, it was pretty crowded and eating at any of the restaurants had a bit of a wait, but were patient and were able to get a table out front at the Gruyere Traditions Switzerland restaurant (I took pictures of each page of the menu). We didn't realize that there was an area to sit at out back, which really afforded a much better view of the surroundings. Be warned, tho, that there are two ways to get up to the base of the hill that leads you up to where the village/castle is - there's the road and a slightly steeper path. We made the mistake of taking the path. Yeah, next time we go, we'll have to split our time between staying in Bern and Zurich. We had a great time, tho!

Dear Djemo, many thanks for your advices and nice videos about beautiful Switzerland! Actually it's a little bit difficult to plan trips on a distance, because of very frequent weather changes in the country. Hi Elvira. My pleasure to have produced this video. I agree, the weather can make things complicated. I will make a video about planning according to the weather. We can only work around it and try to live with it. To be honest, the last 2 Summers were way too sunny and hot, I guess some rain is quite okay, but currently, the rain is definitely too frequent and intense. We got floods everywhere, some are very devastating.

Hi. Thanks a lot for watching and your comments also in my past videos. I took a look at your channel and suggest you to work on your thumbnails first. They are overloaded and do not look very clickable. Also, the "Top 8 things in Tokyo" should actually show Tokyo and not mount Fuji that is more than 100 km away. I hope I could help you with that :)

@@Destinavigator but I think that does not make your thumbnail clickable. This is good for a Japan video but not Tokyo. I watched a video of yours, I suggest to use more video material instead of photos. I understand that material may not always be available and is costly. Is that you talking in the videos? Also I dont think the pinned comment should be asking to subscribe. Subscribers arent that important anymore, what matters most these days is to have regularly returning viewers and building a good bond with them👍🏼 I hope i could help.
