Thank you for the review, James! It is really motivating to get this kind of feedback. There are some features of the app I'd like to mention, to make it even more interesting: First of all, it also works without a pressure sensor, using a scale only (and it's free). This way you obviously only get a flow graph, which is interesting by itself. Also, it makes the app suitable for pour over. There are more supported scales: beyond the Acaia Lunar, Pearl, Cinco and Pyxis, the Skale II scale is also on the list, more will follow. :) Features: - autostart on pressure: logging starts automatically, when a certain pressure is reached - auto stop on lifting the cup - virtual autotara: no need to tara the scale. When starting a shot, the app will start logging from 0g, no matter what the scale shows - switch between weight increase and flow graph - E61 groupheads are compatible Well, I guess these are the most important ones. Enjoy! :) Cheers, Miklós

Hey Miklós, how did you integrate the acaia scales in your app? I thought their protocols are not open. Did you reverse engineer the code? Because there are microcontoller based espresso machine modifications to bring pressure profiling and so on but usually only work with the skale2 because its open code.

I think it would be interesting to see some taste tests done with this, to see how much taste changes with different pressure curves, how much we can predict based on the pressure curves and also to try and pull several shots with the same profile to see if they're as consistent as they should be.

Thanks for the review. I have the chance to try it out with Flair espresso on the Budapest Cafebar Bazaar 2020. I was given a definite profile (Leva profile) as benchmark which had to be reproduced. I have to admit it was not an easy-peasy exercise at all even for the second try, and proved it requires some persistent playing period if you want to just repeat a memorable shot. It was very enjoyable and offered a navigation tool for your lever machine brewing process, which could be an extremely useful learning tool for beginners at least until the "art of craft" embodied in their nerve system. I am happy to see it to be highly recognised by James here, and congratulation to Gábor and Miklós to this smart endevour!

Gabor is a great guy and passionate about what he does, and he roasts great coffee too! The very first thing I did to my Cremina was to buy Gabor's naked portafilter. It is so much better than the chunky stock one - James you should definitely get hold of one for your review! Coincidentally just yesterday I watched the video on the smart scales because of my interest in the Profiler. I think it is a great tool for improving the quality of the shots on direct levers, but on the other hand direct levers are there for making coffee a little more art and a little less science.

Great idea! Just a little advice for using the Cremina: Before locking the filled portafilter, lift the lever up to just below the point, where water starts to flow. If you lift the lever with the portafilter firmly in place you pull the ground coffee upwards and risk ruining the integrity of the puck.

It looks to me that the plots have used some sort of smoothing function(judging from the last part of the curves, an exponential one similar to capacitor discharging). The great thing about these functions is that they produce nice curves but they do alter the results displayed. When you want to exactly recreate a profile, maybe a raw input could be more preferable. The software has a lot of interesting tricks and features which are fascinating. I think it might be possible to further improve the profile tracking functionality by blending in some control theory.

Since he went early but then decided to try and follow the curve as closely as possible for demonstration purposes, I'd say that actually was a pretty bad replication of the first shot. But it would be an interesting question in general if not for this shot particularly. But I think the real question here is, if it is a significant improvement of repeatability across multiple days and it's not an easy question to answer with repeatable tests. I tried coming up with a few ways, but they all fall flat in some way or another.

Looking forward to seeing more before you give it away (hopefully to me 😁) ScaleI would very much like the SEP for my Flair but I can't quite justify spending more than the Flair. I am hoping to get a scale (looking at the Decent scale if it fits when it comes out) to do flow rate / profiling. There is a very interesting home brew scale/transducer in the Flair Facebook group that looks promising, unfortunately updates are sporadic as he is busy with other things. If I was a single man I would get this in a heart beat in the hope paired with the Flair and a scale you could have a poor man's Decent Espresso machine 😁

I have a vintage Olympia Cremina that I installed one of his analog gauges on. I was planning to upgrade to the digital later (since the piston swap is already performed) but I'm keeping the analog. The line of sight between you, as you are pulling, and the analog gauge is pretty spot-on, at least on the Cremina. I can perform my slow ramp-up and ramp-down based on the position of the lever or time on my scale. With the digital, you have to look down at a phone, presumably on the table, while pulling. The ergonomics are not as good and I can imagine it might reduce your pulling accuracy or place strain on your shoulder. But! He makes rock-solid stuff, and I thinking about upgrading a La Marzocco GS3 MP with a digital one in the future.

Thanks James for this video. I would like to have your opinion about the flow control on the vibration pumps like the profitec pro 600. Do you recommend this flow control for vibration pumps?

Like the idea of profiling and potentially used it on other machines! it opens up the black box of pressure profiling.

Yes, and as we are independent from coffee machine manufacturers, the possibilities are endless! :)

Miklos Csanady Indeed! But I could imagine it’s challenging to completely translate the pressure profile because there are others parameters that affect brew pressure as well, eg, coffee particle size, water temperature, number of holes of the basket etc... Keep working on it💪🏻

I'd like to see you put this on a La Pavoni and regulate the pressure to see if it effects the results.

Good tool and I think it will will great with my flow control valve, but it’s little expensive for what it offer.

That's pretty cool, I wonder if this IoT+coffee data will become a thing in the next few years.

Hi James! I have been enjoying your videos having only discovered your channel a couple of days back and will take a look At your Patreon. One thing that would be great to see, if it hasn't been done already... What home set up would you recommend for home espresso style coffee for 200, 500, 1000 gbp? Grinder, scales, machine... Would be cool to see.

Time to show that this approach can be used to tweak an incredible cup of coffee.

Thought. Using the same parameters. Coffee, grind size, puck preparation etc. All you need is the app + Bluetooth scale. The pressure is a nice addition, but technically the only real-time metric you need to reproduce the same shot, is the flow rate?

Cool stuff, cool tech and development so... I have a Brewista smart scale (it’s smart but doesn’t connect) and I prefer wasting coffee at least for now.
