The smallest mechanical keyboard ever?
Ойын-сауық
Today we build the smallest keyboard I have ever seen. An Ortho 20% keyboard that known as the butter stick. Let's see if this thing is actually usable or if it's just a meme.

You could probably use this for steno if it's compatible with open source firmware. Edit: actually nvm, it's got 2 keys fewer than a steno board, you'd have to use fucking layers 💀
I just had a mental breakdown even imagining how I would type on this. We were so focused on whether or not we could create 20 percents that we never stopped to think if we should.

Might actually be worth it. Imagine just typing majority of words and the convenience it brings with just macro keys and such? But maybe if it's atleast 3 rows. I think a 3 row Keyboard be perfect for typing.

@@thegreatbeavers Oh wow! Wonder if they'll ever come out with a three row keyboard! This is sarcasm
@MAGAIVER

@@louisgrissman4857 It's called Gherkin, I daily drive one, it's a lot of fun to use but it takes quite a bit of QMK sorcery to make it good to use daily. The stock keymap did not suit me at all, took me a while to figure out a keymap a like. I only use 2 layers for almost everything, I have 2 more layers for things I don't use a lot like reset, light controls, macros and F1 to F12 .
Just get a stenotype keyboard at this point. An actually cool and useful skill.

Or artsey!
If its called the butter stick, I expect it to make a stock NK Cream to feel smoother than a C3 Tangerine
It's really meant for Kailh Choc switches, like the 20g gChocs, tbf. Single finger combos and chords aren't too hard there with the low keycaps and soft actuation.
Call me crazy but something like the Gherkin is actually pretty usable. Once you get into 2-row keyboards then I'd just go the ARTSEY route if anything.
I use a similar design as my daily driver. I made it myself and it's way more comfortable than it looks. The butter stick's problem is the layout. If you separate the thumb keys a little you get a more ergo keyboard and the experience is waaay better. Cheers!

Dude, how... Can you show your keyboard?
@MAGAIVER
2 жыл бұрын
@@houghwhite411 you should go watch Ben Vallack's videos it is possible to use keyboards even smaller than the Butterstick without using combos.
this is the best security for anyone trying to get into your computer, they'll take 1/2 an hour to input your password
Ben Vallack would like a word with that 20% - he types 80 wpm on 16 keys Seriously though, to the uninitiated the tiny ergo layouts (my 34 keys seem huge in comparison) seem impossible to learn, but they are totally useable. It just takes a while to adjust. Your comments at the end are absolutely on point. Although even to us the butter stick is still a bit of a meme.

Love your content, keep up the great work
"i am a very dumb individual" never have more relatable words been spoken
I would genuinely love to see you type more on this, honestly I want to pick one up, any link to where you got the case that it came with?
Having been in this hobby for the past 9 years, there used to be a time when people argued for 60% keyboards because it "encouraged proper typing technique" by keeping your hands glued to the home row. Those same proper touch typists have basically moved on to 40's and this, and now people justify 60's because of deskspace for gaming with a mouse, which ironically was the argument people used back then to justify TKL's. This hobby is wierd.

For me, fragmenting keyboards is progress. A 60%, a macroboard with F keys, and a seperate numpad. Mmm. Just throw that shit anywhere you want.
imagine getting proficient with it and actually using outside. i'd love to be able to rock up to a meeting and whip out my 20% keyboard and combo my way through

I like small boards, but I still couldn't imagine an effective layout before watching this. It turned out to be really good, you can get used to this.
Finally something that won't one-up my masculinity
if steno is a pianist playing a wonderful piece, this is like an infant at the mall whose mom let them try the free piano
A smol masterpiece
The fact you tried a typing test. The dedication does not go unseen lol
It was hilarious and painful to watch Shoobs begin to use this abomination. Total troll board.
I like how it talks about the color of butter on the inside of the board lol
Shoobs coming in clutch with the upload just as I was gonna be productive lmao
I’m guessing this is how they type in sci-fi movies. The layout doesn’t seem to be 60% so this seems like the fit.
Oh I absolutely see you go through hell using the butter stick for a month!
u can literally see the shoob struggles in the typing attempts lol

absolute banger
“It’s normal size and fully functional!”
I was looking at a 10 switch keyboard for the super compact nature here back in May
Everybody gangsta until the %20 rolls up.

This would be an awesome macro pad but I dont think I could ever type on it

imagin shoobs making the intro with this keyboard
Shoobs my man, looks like the deskmat is due for a dusting 😅
When you love typing words but also need to pretend you have a stenograph
This is probably the keyboard DMV uses.
shoobs not knowing what a steno keyboard is is the funniest shit ever
I daily drive a 12x4 ortho keyboard and it's completely usable, that Butter Stick seems a bit too complex for me but it'd be fun to play with.

Fast forward some more I created a 20key layout for the Gherkin and got 50wpm within a few minutes of playing with it, my layout does not use combos tough, I have a layer for the missing alpha keys and other layers for everything else, it is fully usable and has every key a TKL has.
I would love to see another video of you learning this weird ass layout
Dang it, man. Now I want one even though I have no use for it lol. Will this replace my 7V as my daily driver? Will I turn insane in doing so? Let's find out on the next episode of, no one asked.
This is a literal mmo hotbar but if your other skills swapped in on the fly after holding a modifier key.
This is hilarious

The Butter Stick: Stenography without the benefits
The first typing test looks like how my grandma would type lmao
wake up babe new weird looking keyboard
The ultimate mini keyboard would just be T9 typing. So much easier than this
Imagine having to write an essay with this thing lmao
I would probably just cry
What is the intro music? Also I like the keeb you should use it more often
props to for memorizing all of the letter "street fighter combos"
I think the combo wasn’t meant to be press with multiple fingers, it is meant to be pressed with a single finger. For example, to press A, you should use your left pinky to press the gap between Q and Z. Also you might need to use low profile key caps to achieve single-finger combo easily.
Gg Shoobs you did it!
Brixton bully, slide with a bottie, man hold two from the woodie
I thought the 27 keys of pain was bad...
Hey, this keyboard is smooth like butter.
This is the true meaning of my man is typing on a whole protine bar
You have metioned that any JWK bottom for BCP would work. Would the JWK Black Linears be a good choice?
This is what i imagine you typing your intro on
20% is viable for english if you use 26 keys or develop a custom tap dance format. Or I guess just get good Also I finally dove to buy some Cherrys for a cherry pie recipe. I'll be using jwick bottoms with kailh burgandy stems and gat red tops. Should have enough for a 65% (I did order a purple KBD67lite this past weekend)
ok damn that's not the way I imagined to type on that board... I was thinking the 2 "spacebar" keys are raise and lower like on a ortho keyboard and when you press raise, the first row becomes the r2 and when you press lower the first row becomes r4.
This should be considered crime against humanity
And now we wait for someone to make 1% keyboard
I kinda want to learn this
If someone came over to my house with this, I’m giving them the house.
well u can use it as a Rhythm game keyboard
Love the Osu! Ref =))
