I absolutely cannot believe how well Outrun 2 has held up visually and experientially this whole time.

Sega revolutionized and strait out dominated the arcade industry. They were bold and creative beyond the normal realm of thinking. That's Sega for you, no barriers. God I love Sega, and this channel embodies the feeling and fun Sega gave me for decades. Just wish we could go back.

I am not sure if they "dominated". Other big players that's just as good with just as much heritage can be found in names like Taito, Namco, SNK, Konami, Capcom.. All famous in their own right..

Ben Liu They dominated a particular genere: racing games, no company could come close to Sega when it came to racing games, sure there was Namco's Ridge Racer series, but it came as a distant second. Their expertise in this genere culminated in the swan song of coin op racing games: Ferrari F355 Challenge, this was not even an arcade racer, but a full fledged car simulator.

After burner , out run , space harrier , power drift , Virtua racing , hang on , shinobi, alien syndrome , scud race. One of these has to be in your top 10 :)

Space Harrier. That needs to be in the list. Nobody ever gives that game the respect it deserves. People will be talking about Yu suzuki and say “creator of such games as Hang-On, Outrun, AfterBurner, etc...” and just leave space Harrier out of the list because “ItS nOt As GoOd As ThE oThEr GaMeS”. Just.....why, people?

Alien, Syndrome was rubbish, and the, games lost something losing the cabinet controls, Afterburner in the arcade was nothing without the hotas.

In Finland you can still find Sega Rally machines in many random places. It's kinda crazy how they have stayed there for over 20 years, but I guess people still play them. It's an amazing game to this day, even though it's technically outdated in every way possible. I guess fun can never be outdated :)

You will find Sega Rally 2 twin cabinets here in Russia everywhere. It's arguably the most popular arcade cabinet in Russia since it's so widespread. Almost every big movie theatre has a twin cabinet, some cafes have them and absolutely every arcade has at least one of them. What baffles me is that even the ultra-rare F-Zero AX deluxe cabinets aren't so rare here, too. My local arcade even has two of them linked (as well as six seats of Sega Rally 2). And I'm sure that the arcades won't go away in the near future, because of the timeless classics like Sega Rally 2 and other Sega games. Oh, and we have a ton on Time Crisis 4's as well.

You to are an older gamer like myself. being 45 I have been blessed to have pretty much witnessed and experienced videogames evolution. I to remember being blown away by Segas super scaler series upon finding them in arcades!!! I was stunned and believe anything could be possible with graphics like that. that was before polygons even hit.lol Sega and videogames will always be a part of my life and history. thank you for the trip down memory lane when he world seemed better.

As a 36 year old man i agree I miss those days of sega performance arcade games we will never return to tjem now sadly its all cod and dlc fed down our throats. Those was the days queuing up in coral Island in Blackpool (uk) waiting as a 13 year old desperate to use the force feedback wheel.

You guys are lucky to have experienced these arcade games. All i got is the shitty ones at my local arcade.

How SEGA haven't made an Arcade classic collection yet still baffles me, it's something I would love to have, so much greatness left to the winds of time, and if not for MAME would be totatally unplaybale right now. No instead SEGA will just keep releasing Megadrive/Genesis collections till the end of time.

You'd figure an arcade classics comp that was downloadable wouldn't be a huge investment. Just stick a nice frontend and artwork in there. I know licencing emulators is a bit of a finicky business though. Retro gaming is so fashionable at the moment and people remember the likes of Outrun, Shinobi and Golden Axe if not necessarily their sequels. Just throw them in as well as bonus content. The plus side is these games have aged rather a lot better than Mega Drive versions and they are very well suited to dabbling with for 5 minutes here and there. They were designed for the most casual of game playing audiences in the first place.

SEGA haven't been known for good emulation/porting, right now they're still having struggles getting the Megadrive emulation perfect, let alone arcade games. Saturn is also renowned for being near impossible to emulate perfect due to it's complicated hardware. M2 plans to release some arcade games for their SEGA AGES line on the Switch however, including OutRun, Space Harrier and Virtua Racing, so just hope that project keeps going for a while.

They have released "SEGA Ages" for the Japanese Saturn and PS2 with Outrun, Powerdrift, etc.

Golden Axe: The Revenge Of Death Adder was and still is one of my favorite games. Who knows how many quarters I dropped into it back in the day. Thanks for making this list, Sega Lord X.

Sega was always ahead of their time when it came to arcade games.

The “Galaxy Force” sit down space ship was incredible back in the day! I loved spiderman when it came out as well. Golden Axe RODA was so elite when it came out, the first time i saw it i spent probably 20$ + on it until my brother and I finished it. Then we started over and tried different paths! Its an absolute crime that it never saw a home release, it should have been a Saturn launch title!

Galaxy Force was definitely a beast in the arcade. Still impressive today.

The SEGA arcade games were the biggest advertisment for the home consoles, in my opinion. I just bought my mega drive because of golden axe. When i saw it in a exposition, back in 1990, here in Brazil, i was mesmerized by the graphics in Altered Beast.

Believe it or not, my first impression of the Genesis was quite negative. Space Harrier II was a piss poor version compared to the beautiful arcade version, leading me to believe the machine underpowered. It wasn't until I saw Altered Beast that I reconsidered that stance. I realized that while the Genesis wasn't a Super Scaling beast, it certainly was a great piece of technology.

I agree Namco took over the arcade scene in the 90s. and Capcom had street fighter.

great video. you should make a video about things we had to deal with being a arcade kid of the late 80's and 90's. ie, playing a game while being on a win streak and your dad or mom telling you "we have to leave now" or needing to use the restroom while playing a game or walking up to a machine while some one was playing it and they would block the whole arcade so that you wouldn't ruin their progress.

I'd love to see an arcade renaissance - create a new system board with the equivalent of 3 Geforce 1080ti's, 128GB of RAM etc. - large 4K screens and just create amazing games with dense environments not possible (well, not practical for most) at home.

CB W - True, but the technology will help get people off their butts to check out the arcade - arcades remained relatively popular through the mid 90's or so because they had games like Virtua Fighter 3 etc. on system boards that were just leagues beyond home console/PC hardware, you could only have those experiences in arcades. You're going to need powerful hardware with unique peripherals etc. to get teens/adults into modern arcades - if the gameplay/graphics are only just comparable to what they have at home, they're not going to bother.

A good gaming computer will still be considerably larger/more expensive than a console, any most people don't own $5000+ rigs, so I think there's still room to impress people in an arcade - custom arcade board with 4x 1080ti's, gobs of RAM and an 8-core Intel CPU could pump out some pretty impressive visuals and large-scale games, of course such an arcade system would be quite expensive. You are right about Arcades needing custom peripherals/seats etc. to attract people (like the new "Space Invaders" game with the giant guns at Dave and Busters).

We had an Aladdins Castle arcade that got all the big Namco and Sega arcade games for about 10 years. When it closed, I was gutted.

I miss everything about the arcade. They are nearly extinct where I am. Well, unless you count that crud that Dave & Busters peddles.

I'm a big SEGA fan, I record gameplay of these in IRL, Glad there is a channel showcasing SEGA's hits. Keep up the gameplay.

Yep Outrun 2 is awesome, I play it where and whenever I see a cab. But my faves have got to be a Yu Suzuki treble, Outrun..Space Harrier...Afterburner. Those games are like a time machine to my childhood every time I play them, huge amounts of nostalgia :)

Great lists. Awesome video. It brings back a lot of memories. One of my favorites and first game I ever played back in 1989 is Shinobi Shadow Dancer, the Arcade game of course. It remains my favorite Shinobi game of all time, its a game a lot of people don’t discuss or forget when discussing Shinobi games. In my opinion its the better of the Shinobi games and it looks better too of all the series (not a fan of the 3DS anime style). The difficulty and one hit deaths is what made it unique, I never had a problem with it In fact not even as a kid. It did come out for the Master System but it has never received a proper port of the arcade. I love that game a lot, it brings a lot of memories.

Shadow Dancer was awesome. I liked the Genesis game too, but it was very different. It'd be awesome if Sega included it as an extra in one of their compilations.

Oh Sega Rally... I recently missed out on a dualcab for sale here in Belgium. So i went and got the model2 emulator running on my racing rig. I was a little dissapointed with the port to saturn but it still holds up gameplay wise. Outrun2 is a really good game, played it on PC, Xbox, PSP, xbox360 and still couldn't get enough! sadly I only got to see the cab in the arcade once. played 3 times in a row haha. sub+1 you deserve more subs ;)

I have long sought a Sega Rally cabinet here in the US, but the things are so rare I never see them. usually when I do, they are in hard disrepair. And I really appreciate the kind words. Should my content deserve it, the subs will come in time. :)

Loved (& still do!) Daytona, adored sega rally on my sega Saturn, and remember being blown away by the visuals on Scud racer (think it was called something else here in 🇬🇧). Really enjoying your vids 👍

Outrun is my all time favorite. It NEVER gets old.

I think in the UK we have more Sega Rally units than even Daytona USA ones! mainly because obviously rallying is a more British sport, therefore there is a larger fanbase. A lot of Manx TT units about too :)

Yes this is because the UK and USA versions were built in bridgend, south Wales and exported to the USA. We just changed the plug on the cabinet.

@@vyperii There used to be jobs where you'd be paid as a machine tester, I.e. linking up a few sega rally and making sure they work while the next four machines were being built, then repeat the process all day. My favourite story is the first 14 to 17 transformers machines were ruined because someone used screws that were too long and punctured the tubes in the back of the TV, they were write offs.

No Star Wars arcade? Man, I spent so much money playing that game back in it's peak. The local pizza shop had the stand up version in their lobby and the owner freaked out one day when I played all the way through from start to finish. He told me he hasn't seen anyone else beat that game before.

Yeah man....the arcades what a time...remember going with my friends and Sega had some of my favourites....Crackdown...MJ's Moonwalker...Shadowdancer...G-Loc...Golden axe As a kid the arcades (in the Netherlands) I got to were places divided into sections of slot machines with gambling addict chain smoking grown ups. And sections of lined up arcade game cabinets...Some of the best of that time Operation Wolf, Double dragon, Rolling thunder, big sit down After burner cabinet, Thunder blade....it was a real thrill to be there back then....

These game were so important to me as a kid that I remember where I first played every game. The exact store or arcade or fairground. I can't normally remember to bring my own ass with me but I vividly remember these.

Virtual On was my fave arcade game. I miss getting to play it. Sega Rally here in Canada I only ever found the stand up which I loved.

Sega built their empire in the arcades. They were always at best there. Sega then gave us great home consoles ( apart from the 32X and Mega CD ) to play their arcade ports. When the Dreamcast sold it's last console that signaled the "real" end of arcade ports dominance on home consoles, the market had been changing for years but that was the final nail in the coffin. I think the modern gaming world is due for a resurgence in arcade style games. Gaming today is fine but there can be a few too many long winded games and games that suffer with unnecessary gameplay "padding" and overuse of cutscenes (personal grumble). Maybe a modern day resurgence of high quality arcade style games on home consoles would great for the industry and for gamers, especially if Sega were making these types of games instead of crap 3D Sonic games.

I had Thunder Blade for the Sega Master System in all its 8-bit glory. It took me eight months to master that game. Outrunners for arcade with eight cabinets was great to play.

I felt the same way when I played outrun2 for the first time. I had the arcade platform where you sat in an actual ferrari shell and the volume for the motor was turned way up. It was great!

Great selection! There are many truly game-changers on there, Thunder Blade was basically a 3D game made of 2D sprites, and Daytona USA needs no introduction. It truly is a pity that Gunblade never made it to the Saturn, and of course, that the Mega Drive didn't have hardware scaling and rotating capabilities as was initially intended, we could have got a plethora of interesting ports that way. Pretty interesting one that Spider-Man game, by the way!

Yeah, the lack of hardware scaling in the Genesis/Mega Drive always was a head scratcher. I understand it couldn't have been as powerful as the Super Scaler arcade boards, but to have nothing at all was a mistake seeing as how prevalent it was in their popular arcade games.

Absolutely. As much as I like the Master System, I still don't get why they thought it better to priorize backwards compatibility with it instead of more hardware capabilities for the VDP, an increased color palette or even a better way to implement PCM playback.

Outrun, The house of the dead and Afterburner probably my best arcade experience.

My earliest memory of Sega in the arcade was when my brother got me to sit with him while he played Space Harrier and the moving seat made me cry! There were so many belters that Sega released though. Sega Rally and Daytona were indeed awesome but if was the one time I found a Virtual On cabinet in the wild that was probably the crowning moment of my Sega arcade upbringing. When I went back to the same arcade a few years later the machine had been replaced. It made me aware of how things have changed in the arcade scene over the years. Though I enjoy games like the Time Crisis series it was Sega's efforts that kept me coming back to the arcades. Oh, does anyone remember the Jurassic Park lightgun game Sega did? That was fun too.

So many fantastic memories playing OutRun 2 on Xbox back in 2004-2005.

I'm visiting Kyoto right now and I just hit the jackpot in a local arcade. One arcade cabinet had something like 700 games (granted, lot of them were just different region versions of the same game) in it! It had all the stuff like Street Fighters, Metal Slugs, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Mortal Combat, Streets of Rage etc. It even had the Spider-Man arcade game from this video. Needless to say that I gave visiting shrines and temples a pass for today, and spent the whole day glued to the machine with a mountain of coins besides me. Sad that you can't have arcade experiences like this outside of Japan anymore.

I remember in hamleys London they had a 360°afterburner game. It was great hanging upside down and flying all over the place

I once saw the full king sized outrun 2 cab with the 2 seater ferrari cockpit in an arcade, it is actually amazing. Coast to coast 2006 is a really great home version... totally worth modding an old xbox to install it on since the hard copy is really expensive these days.

Nice video, I saw 4 Sega Rally machines in Tijuana on Mexico, they where in those petter pipper pizza's, in fact many rare machines mentioned can found there, I also saw a completly origina Cool riders machine (a standup version)

To me personally playing afterburner in a sit down mechanically moving machine to play for 50 cents was the best ever IMO back in the first half of the 1980s. That's just my opinion. I never even played half the games listed here. I was fortunate enough to own the sega master system in the 1980s. I love your content. Hat's off to you.

Golden Axe will always be my favorite arcade game. And the Simpson's game was also a great classic. I lost allot of money on those 2

It was a gut punch for sure. When I saw early screens of a Golden Axe for the Saturn back in 1994/1995, I thought for sure it was Revenge of Dead Adder. Instead, it was Golden Axe The Duel....

Great list. Outrun 2 is pretty much my favorite...well, anything to do with driving.

Outrun 2006 AKA Outrun Coast to Coast, are by far my favorite Rendition of outrun, but playing the original is just as great.

I can play any version of it. Awesome game.

The most impressive arcade I have ever experienced was Galaxy Force 2 Deluxe. That game was simply incredible for it's time and the cabinet was jaw dropping! However, Outrun 2 still remains my favorite arcade game to this day.

Sega rally arcade cabs are still everywhere in the U.K. We just had a place near me open called arcade club and you pay £15 entry with all machines then on free play. Has 4 floors of arcade cabs from 70’s through the 2000s. Needless to say, it’s heaven.

This shouldn't surprise you, all of Segas stuff was made in Bridgend, South Wales and exported from there, including to the USA. This is why so little correct information exists about the cabinets. Oddly enough everything still exists, I have 5 and a quarter inch discs in my office from the 1980s with all these specs on, and the old amiga style discs as well as we got into the 90's.

Man I remember when I first encountered GA: RoDA. Totally blown away by by the first stage, the female centaur, and THAT MUSIC.

Yeah, it blew me away, too. I loved the look and sounds of the game. It was truly 2D pushed to the max back then.

Of course my favorites are After Burner, Hang-On, Super Hang-On, Enduro Racer, Rad Mbbile, OutRun, Turbo OutRun, Altered Beast and countless others within the Sega brand. Good picks though to check out and the ones you picked are among my favorites as well. Especially OutRun 2 which looks killer man.

How did you record Revenge of death adder dor this review? I am trying to get it working on my emulation set up but it's glitchy. I tried running it with Final Burn Alpha and Mame 2003

my favourites are: daytona usa 2, star wars podracer, house of the dead 2, initial-d 3, scud race, hang on, f355, after burner, crazy taxi, sega rally

I still have all my old systems & games. Play them as much as current gen systems. But, also in my kitchen (dining area)..I have a Virtua Fighter 2 arcade machine. Picked it up for a crazy good deal back in early 2008.

Can't argue with this list at all. I'm sure some would baulk at you placing Sega Rally over Daytona, but Rally is a much more nuanced driving experience, and nothing beats the feel of the deluxe motion cabinets. I've had both of these machines in my home collection at different times, and I regret having sold them

I'm shocked Shinobi didn't make the list of your Top 10 but like you said Sega had so many arcade classics that it's hard to parse and reduce down only to 10 :)

That'd be awesome to have the arcade back, especially with how fast technology advances today. I guess that's part of the problem, though. A company spends millions in R&D, only to have it obsolete and passed by the competition in a few months.

Sega Lord X things just arent like the were back in the day.There just isnt the anticipation that there was in the 80s and 90s to a home conversion on your £199 megadrive or PC engine.At least it was good to experience those times as things are very generic now.

Gunblade and House of dead are the reasons I still keep my Wii running.. got a big Wii gun instead that Wii zapper, to get that arcade feeling. My local arcade has Daytona, you can't say the game is more than 20 years old, and one of the busiest section even compare to modern racing games in there. People still love to play it.

Outrun 2 stock came out on Xbox (the original console) sp came out on PS2 and pretty much everything else but the original (and I feel best version) is on the original Xbox console. It's also backward compatible with Xbox 360. It suffers from slowdown though and you lose the traffic in two player (link up) but it does feature Skudrace and Daytona USA 2 stages as bonuses which is nice. Also Sega rally is pretty much a given in every decent UK arcade, even to this day! I guess it's because Rallying is far more popular in Europe than America. Great video though. I really enjoy your content and find you extremely knowledgeable about Sega hardware and just video games in general. Good stuff man

Actually, even the original Xbox game is based on Outrun SP. The original arcade game plays differently and is quite a bit harder.

In the late 90s I had pretty much stopped going to the arcades. I was a college student with a girlfriend and a part time job. Any free time I had for video games was spent with my Saturn. Why go out for Virtua Fighter 2 when I could play it in my apartment? But one game that pulled me back was Top Skater. That had to be played in the arcade and I absolutely loved it.
