The slugs are eating my crops Hanley Plotter Allotment 198

Back on the plot after a week in West Wales. I am struggling to prevent slugs eating my crops. I am making a garlic solution in an effort to stop the slugs. I plant my maincrop potatoes.

Hope you had a lovely time away. Oh my frickin lord I just can’t believe it we had a day and a half of rain and they slugs came out in full force. For the first time ever my tomato plants have been totally eaten by slugs. I had one sitting in the sun chomping away. I’m thinking I’m going to grow everything hanging from a suspended frame 😂😂 to keep everything off the ground. I said the other day why do we frickin bother 🤬🤬. Yep not dead is good. What the slugs aren’t eating the leaf miner is, it’s got my chard now. Ok I’ll stop whinging now but I’ll do it again next time too 😜😜. Slugs ate tomato plants, parsnips, potato plant, lily and beans so far. Leaf miner for my chard and beets 😢 Have a super week and a bucket of soapy water makes me feel a lot better 🤭🤭 🐌 🛀

As usual Ali, your comment had me laughing! Actually so far the tomato plants are slug free, but that may change as they move on from eating my onions and broad beans! Interestingly John my neighbour has always used a weak soapy water solution which he swears by. He reckons it keeps the black fly at bay as well. I have now used my garlic spray on everything, so we shall see if that works. And regarding the cherry tree, yes I could net it, but not sure it’s worth the effort for half a dozen cherries. Mind you, by the time they ripen they may be all that’s left on my plot! 🤬🤬🤣

It’s so discouraging when after all the hard work and nurturing crops are taken by pests. As you say it’s part and parcel of growing but it does knock your spirit for a time. Having two plots when I go away for a week I dread what awaits me in terms of weeds 😮 but slow and steady wins the race mate. We’re old soldiers we’ll soldier on! Have a good week Martin and chin mucker😊👍🏾

I think all the Slugs on the Island are in my garden, the funny thing is Iv'e never had a slug problem on Onions before but now it's like they have eaten every thing else so it has to be the onion's next.

Yes I am the same, never lost onions to slugs. That is the crop I am most upset about because we use a lot of onions in the kitchen, (I am assured!)

@@067captain I'm trying the light green plastic slug collars, I've seen them used by a couple of other KZreadrs but I've never used them before. I'm also using organic slug pellets. We'll see how it goes!

Sorry to hear that. I check my parsnips every time I go to the plot. I have lost a couple, bitten off, but not all. It is a strange year.

Thanks for that. Oddly it’s reassuring to know this is happening across all gardens and allotments, so it isn’t something I am doing wrong. Hope you have been enjoying the recent dry, hot weather, maybe that will slow the buggers up!

I was wondering why you don't use slug pellets, but I see you've answered that below. I completely agree that current slug pellets are nowhere close to being as effective as the metaldehyde ones, but in years of epic slug problems I do find them better than nothing - and definitely better than the trendy (and expensive!) "deterrents" that I watch people on youtube trying to no avail! I think timing is my main strategy. I remember a hosta grower being interviewed on Gardeners' Question Time several years ago and he said that the earlier you pellet in spring the better. Most people don't start until they're putting their first seeds in the ground (March/April time), but the best time to do it is late January/early February (depending how cold it is) when the slugs and snails are just starting to become active after winter. If you can reduce the numbers then, there will be fewer around to breed and your population levels can be held in check. If you start trying to control them later, there will already be so many you haven't a hope! Anyway, bit late for this advice this year (!) but perhaps something to experiment with in the future. Unless of course the garlic spray does the job, in which case we'd all better get brewing! 😁

That’s a really good point about timing, and whilst I agree that ‘ship has sailed’ this year, I will definitely bear that in mind next year. Thanks for the cracking comment. I also agree that the copper tape, egg shell etc are non starters.

Sprinkle fennel, rue , anise or rosemary chopped up on your garden as slugs hate these. Or get copper strips. Just saying.

I spent a long time yesterday spraying all my crops with garlic solution. So next time I am on the plot I will see if that has worked. Some of my customers have copper strips around their hostas that they keep in pots, but the slugs still eat the hostas. Hadn’t heard of the other remedies though, so thanks for passing those on. It makes sense as they all have very distinct smells! All the best, Martin.

What have you got against good old fashioned slug pellets? They don't like them up 'em. I would have given you some for your birthday if l had thought about it 🤔. MRJ

Slug pellets used to contain metaldehide, which killed slugs, good and proper. But there was a concern it also harmed other wildlife, so those pellets are no longer available. The new pellets don’t seem to be anywhere near as effective. Was up the plot today, and the garlic spray seems to be working. X
