The Slam Where Serena Proved Everyone Wrong | Australian Open 2007

World Number 81 Serena Williams, returning from injury, comes back despite 'analysts' claiming she was never going to win and was 'out of shape'. She proved them all wrong winning the entire tournament beating 6 seeds along the way including a complete destruction of World number 1 Sharapova in the final!
Another reason why she's the GOAT!
This video shows her jouney in this tournament including emphasis on the third round comback vs 5th seed Nadia Petrova from 1-5 down in the second after losing the first set and final beatdown of Sharapova
Serena - 81 in the world:
R1- 27th seed Mara Santangelo
R2 - Anne Kremer
R3 - 5th seed Nadia Petrova
R4 - 11th seed Jelena Jankovic
QF - 16th seed Shahar Peer
SF - 10th seed Nicole Vaidišová
F - Number 1 in the World Maria Sharapova

I remember this so clearly. All of the media, including the commentators throughout this match, were so excited to announce that this time, Serena had no chance. The overall tone of these comments was "relief" on two levels: (1) relief that, finally, the black woman who has been doing so well in a predominantly white sport "doesn't have a chance," and (2) relief that Sharapova, their blonde white princess, has come to save the day from the "too aggressive," "all power and no finesse," and now "injured" Serena. When Serena won here, she shut everyone up, shattering those racist fantasies of relief like a baseball flying through a window. She said "um what rivalry"? I think she knew, as she's always known, how much people wanted to see her fail. But in Serena-like style, this was nothing new to her -- due to her background, the odds were always stacked against her -- yet she persevered. That's why she will forever be the queen to me. So much respect and admiration for this woman!

The tournament that turned me into a Serena fan! I was watching the Petrova match before my winter college tennis practice (we practiced very early) and I remember how ridiculously rude the commentators were when Petrova looked to be in control. Serena had so many clutch games throughout the tournament which you pointed out nicely and I remember how encouraging the Australian crowd was every time it felt like she was in trouble. Against Sharapova, she probably played the best match of her career. I couldn't believe how many winners she was hitting off of Maria's first serve. It was amazing and inspiring!

I really dislike the commentators. Not just during Serena’s match. Like they are always bashing the person who instantly gets broken in the first game of the match and once they break back. All of a sudden they are for them. Like your job isn’t to pick a side of who will win the match. It’s for you to assess and tell the fans why they are making the mistakes. Not make it a contest of who will make the mistake first

Steffi graf is still the GOAT. aside from slam total, steffi has everything else. Steffi won her 22 slams in 12 years span. Serena is now going into her 3rd decade of tennis pro and she is at number 23. Dont get me wrong Serena is a great player, maybe the best player stroke per stroke. I dont see anyone from past & present beating serena in her peak. But when we r talking about the most successful/decorated player, steffi graf wins hands down

Nobody was able to stay consistent week in & week out. Of course steffi would say serena is GOAT. Steffi would never say she herself as GOAT. shes not like that, plus shes left tennis cuz she had nothing to prove anymore and unlike martina & evert, she really left tennis and moved on to the family part of her life.

Serena isn't the GOAT of tennis. She's just a one trick pony, whom Bianca exposed as a one dimensional player. When Bianca neutralized Serena's serve, Serena was helpless and had no other part of her game to save her. Today's great players need a complete variety of shots to be great, with good court coverage, not just a serve and nothing else.

@@tennistopshots6346 ...yes I have. The standard antidote to Serena's big babe tennis was to find even bigger babes to hit the ball even harder. It didn't take long for truly skilled tennis players to realize that Serena and her big hitting colleagues were standing up to 15 feet behind the baseline to deal with these big hitters. Bianca's drop shots and angles and variety easily destroyed Serena and her big babe dinosaurs, showing the world the lack of talent of the Williams brothers. Bianca has never lost to anyone named Williams. Serena's way overated. Steffi Graf won only one less slam than Serena, but only needed half the time Serena did. Steffi, not Serena, is clearly the goat of women's tennis

And the 2018 and 2019 Wimbledon and US Open finals proved to others why she's not the GOAT. Look at her total career. There've been incredible highlights, but also some terrible performances. Total career wise, Court, Evert, Navratilova, and Graf all have better careers, and are therefore greater.

@@jeremyredding2251 yea i think thats a more valid example. ive been thinking abt that choke and why of all people she couldnt win that match and i think it's because steffi established a new open era record (w the golden slam and such) and serena was thinking abt meeting that record too much. we saw it happen when she was struggling to get to 22 and now with getting to 24 (before that she was nearly untouchable in finals).... additionally on the topic of who had better careers i would say yea steffi/martina/chrissie were all more consistent for sure but none of them had injury setbacks like serena or a loss of a sister that wrecked theur mental health for a while. at the end of the day she was able to step it up again and again and be dominant for those 23 gs and to me that is just as admirable as being dominant for 10 years.
