The SKETCHIEST Drag Strip in the United States?? (Wrecks EVERYWHERE!)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
It's no secret that Brown County Dragway is one of, if not the sketchiest 1/8 mile tracks in the United States. The track surface is full of bumps, undulations, and even..grass. Yes your read that right - there is a strip of grass going down 3/4 of the drag strip in between the lanes. Seems like a recipe for disaster..and it is. These questionable track conditions are what attract racers and fans alike as it makes for one hell of an entertaining event.

For those who don't know, this track was bought in January 2022 from the looooong time (since the 08s) Fields family owners, so this was from the first season's racing under the new ownership. Thus some of the changes noted. Thanks to the past and new owners for keeping this historic facility alive while tracks all over the country are dying off.

@Karl with a K I used to work on a pit crew for a stock car, running 1/4mile, 1/2mile circuits. We were not wealthy. We lost money most years. It was fun, so we put everything we had into it. When a win comes, that is the tops, baby! But not all of 'em are richie riches. For sure. Some teams had the cash. But a lot of us were just full time mechanic garages, with a second full time hobby of racing.

Talk about nostalgia. I grew up about 10 miles from this track on the brown/johnson line, an you could hear the cars on wknds going all night, from our front porch. My only run there was in '97 on a '96 modified banshee, paul turner kit, and gradon pro/sudco 40mm pwk intake. Ran 108mph, starting in 2nd with barely enough time to powerband thru 6th before hitting the line. That was a 4 wheeler.. Incredibly short wavy 1/8th in powerful cars, hard to imagine. Thanks for memory fast-lane adventure!

I'm an old 70s era drag racer and been to a few tracks. The old tracks like Browns are slowly being sold and once they're gone they're gone forever. So it makes me smile seeing that Brown County sold and the new owner is doing the right thing making it a bit safer and more importantly preserving a classic American track and past time. These small tracks are where its at. Having raced plenty and now just watch, my old home track Island Dragway (1/4 miler) in NJ is still operating and you can get right up to the cars at the staging area and line up. Its where Garlits broke the 200mph barrier back in 1964. Seeing the cars go down that track well... Theres nothing else like it !!!

Reminds me of the old 1/8 mile Sunset drag strip in SW Pa back in the 80s. Shutdown area was so rough street cars would have rear seats pop loose. Stopping a drag car with big slicks was a nightmare, you bounced all over the place. Probably best it eventually shut down. Most moved to racing on the 1/4 mile not far away in Ohio, forget it's original name but today it's known as Summit Raceway.
Carbon copy of New Bern/Bridgeton NC 1/8th mile with the narrow lanes and grass in between.... I started drag racing there in the early 1990s.... made passes from 9 sec down to mid 5 sec passes in bracket cars there and mid 5s was pretty sketchy back then. Randy Daniels initially held the track record with his Pro Stock Truck at like a 4.40 something and then Tommy The Beast Lee reset it with a 4.20 something in his nitrous Pro Mod and both were the scariest pass I've ever witnessed. Remember there were a couple of bad wrecks over the years.
