The single weakest argument for supporting Trump

I hear this all the time, so I'm hoping to answer it once and for all in this video!

@@bthomson Exactly!! That’s the reason I find Nikki Haley’s ‘Presidential’ attempt laughable, at best!! Haley is in a Party that has disdain for women AND ‘People of Color’ (Haley is both). Yet, she ignorantly thinks she’s “liked” within the Republican Party or, the MAGA Coalition. The Republican Party’s and MAGA’s image for this country is of a ‘Strong White Male’ “Christian Nationalist” Republican Leader! Not of a woman…. ESPECIALLY, a woman of ‘Color’.

He voted for the woman who covered up her husband's abuse of women? Bill Clinton forced a woman to have sex against her will by holding her down and biting her lip when she resisted and Hillary helped cover that up. Bill lied about his relationship with Monica Lewinski and Hillary and Bill tried to make her out as a stalker. I know about the past of these Democrats. I would support Trump over the Clintons and Biden's any day.

I AM TOO: Christian Zionists from Russia, the UK, and the USA, support the genocide of Palestinians. So what is a Zionist and a Christian? Look at the Deaths in the Crusades especially in Spain, Slavery in the USA, Apartheid, Segregation in the Southern USA, the Genocide of Native Tribal Americans in Northern America, the Genocide of Jews in Germany during WWII, the KKK in the USA, Donnie the Commie Trump uses speeches coded of hatred, racism, and the church minded policies to suppress education by removing dictionaries in the Schools of Florida 2023 are new and wide spread, Nazi concentration camps ( nazism was endorsed by the Catholic Church ) and the associated atrocities we never spoken against by the pope or the believers of jesus. The list is very long. The Z and C are death cults that traumatize children from a very young age. ZIONISM and CHRISTIANITY are Terrorists organizations endorsed and supported by government. It's time to stop the terror, murders, genocides and mind control. When we don't speak out we are are a part of the problem. we we do speak out we are a part of a solution. We should never tolerate the severe dominance of these ancient religions to dominate life and liberty and to endorse all things that the religion endorses, promotes and funds that hurts innocente babies, children, women and adults of all races, economic standing and personal ideals.

This is what I’ve noticed as well - how could anyone come to a different conclusion! Even as a god-believing, religious child, I always felt that the religions that damned non-believers to hell just didn’t seem compatible with the god we believed in! Why couldn’t your actions alone determine if you got into heaven or hell? So many of them feel righteous in their hate and it seems to stem from a misunderstanding of some teachings, ignoring others, and selecting other biblical passages that direct them to hate outsiders. It’s wild how much they hate and judge when that was the opposite of Jesus’s message. It’s also incredibly frustrating that many of them believe that atheists can’t have morals, when their religion has a built in clause that offers zero accountability as long as you say the magic word, but eternal suffering if you don’t conform to their beliefs (not believing in god or not saying sorry for a mortal sin).

This is how identity and labels trap people. If you behave and act as Christians are taught to, then you are a Christian regardless of belief. If you claim to be Christian and lie, steal, cheat and deceive then you are not a Christian. This rather simple definition confuses many as SOME proclaimed Christians of the evangelical tribe who have ceremonies involving AR 15 assault Rifles blessed by ministers and videotaped, stretched the definition of Christian. Christianity is not what you believe, think or identify as, but your actions.

90% of the evangelicals I've ever interacted with (including before Trump) have claimed they aren't religious, they "have a personal relationship with Jesus." The problem is that Christians often assume that Christianity in and of itself is an unmitigated good. If it was, there wouldn't be an almost 1800 years long continuous history of it inspiring genocide, murder, torture, rape, plunder, bigotry, and intellectual atrophy. People can be good. People can be Christian. Some good people pretend their faith system makes them good when they harm others. But if the faith system inspires harm, how can you say it's an unmitigated good?

They supported him after they found out he had relations with an adult film actress. They supported him after he said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue. They supported him after instigating an insurrection. They supported him after hearing the election interference tapes from Georgia. They supported him after seeing all of the boxes of classified documents in Mar-a-Lago. There’s more I could say, but I’ll stop here. Him quoting Hitler is just another awful thing he has said or done over the years. If you missed this … Asked on Quora: "Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?" An articulate and witty writer from England, Nate White, wrote the following spot-on response, sentiments shared by people around the world in general … “A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace; all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief. Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing. Not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility. For us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is. His idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty. Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults, he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege. And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff, the Queensberry rules of basic decency, and he breaks them all. He punches downwards, which a gentleman should, would, could never do, and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless, and he kicks them when they are down. So the fact that a significant minority, perhaps a third, of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that: - Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are. - You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man. This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws, he would make a Trump. And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumps of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God, what have I created?’ If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

Here's a thing I don't get, when trump tells it like it is, actually being rude and noncivil, so if they value that so much why don't tell it like it is... oh yes, because they would experience unfavorable outcomes. What kind of people think that being rude and cruel and is a positive attribute. Seriously, act in the same manner as the thing you admire and see what happens to your life and what consequences you will encounter. I say test what you say you admire, act and talk and behave the way the thing you so admire, does and says and enjoy the consequences. Again why do you like such a person and yet you don' t "tell it like it is " , why?

_[This got unintentionally long, I hope you have patience enough to read... sorry]_ That is what my wife and I have been doing since 2018 concerning DJT and the current Republican Party. We have successfully, or mostly successfully, 'deprogrammed' about 25-30 "MAGA"/diehard Trump supporters. Several are either family or close friends who trusted us prior, but many were not... but are now. Although, we do have 'secret weapons'. I am Canadian so that brings in a bit of neutrality but I do bring in valuable, credible and effective 'expertise'. But my wife, American raised, was a prominent and renowned professor of political science and Constitutional history for 38 years and still is a political and economic game theorist. She is a historical expert on American Presidents, having participated in 4 President ranking surveys including the last one that came out ranking Trump last, the least 'Greatest' President. Her C.V. is extensive and impressive including especially being an expert on parsing misinformation and disinformation which she has done since 2008 as a part of now being the lead of the team of 24 U.S. experts who contribute to the Economist Intelligence Unit Democracy Index which measures and ranks 172 country's level of democracy. She does the same for Canada, but not the lead of 22 experts, as she is also a (birthright and 32-year resident) Canadian dual citizen. ... and... *she has been a registered Republican since she voted for Nixon.* Not just registered a Republican, she has been completely enmeshed within the Party, from leadership down, and those behind the scenes 'driving' the Party since the mid-70's. She has 'carte blanche', no b.s. access to every Republican congress member since the early 80's, which she keeps consistent and often persistent access to... she has communicated with every... single... congress member, both Chambers since 1982. Many are friendly acquaintances, casual friends or very close friends from both 'sides'. Nancy Pelosi is one of those casual friends through a very close friend and former neighbor, Oregon Democratic Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, who had invited Nancy and her husband Paul to her home 3 times, twice with Paul, when we were there and Nancy was in Oregon, but Nancy had already been a friendly acquaintance with my wife for decades through her continual communications with her, sometimes in person. She also has complete trust from the Democratic Party, whom she keeps constant direct communications with too. My wife is also a casual 'friend', or as my wife calls it - 'frenemy' - with Chuck Koch whom she has had a continuous personal 'relationship' with, much like a political 'Holmes/Dr. Moriarty' relationship, since the mid-70's. Chuck considers my wife as his "political muse". We have spent several weekends at either his Wichita, Indian Wells or Aspen home with his wife, Liz (I like her a lot, spending more time with her than with 'Holmes and Dr. Moriarty' while they 'butt heads' - we usually go play pool, the only place except outside I can smoke my cigars). She has advised every President since and including Reagan except Clinton and Trump on either Constitutional history or political/economic game theory. But her/our final 'end game' weapon is original Super 8 film from 1978 and 1980, used only if necessary, that she personally or her assistant recorded of the two secret 3-day symposiums the Republicans and those powerful people who co-opted the Party held, L.A. August 18-20, 1978 and San Antonio December 9-11, 1980 (starting the day after Reagan's Safe Harbor day) showing the multifaceted, multi-decade plan to subvert American democracy and Western democracy as a whole. The participants weren't all 'domestic'. She was invited to both by Chuck Koch, and to a lesser extent his brother Dave, as well as Roger Ailes and to a lesser extent, Rupert Murdoch, for the latter one, to do a presentation, which she did and the reason she was allowed to film as she always films her presentations... but continued to film throughout the symposiums. The multifaceted, multi-decade plan is why the U.S. is the way it is now; the plan has been implemented completely successfully, every aspect. My wife of 31 years has meticulously tracked the progress of the plan since 'declining' to participate. She does happen to be under initially 5 separate N.D.A.s, now reduced to 3, we've even showed the actual N.D.A.s to the most stubborn of those we we have tried to 'deprogram'. Once seeing what was presented at those symposiums then seeing how the U.S. and the Republican Party is today and how they have been over the last 45 years is very powerful, many having disorienting epiphanies, strong cognitive dissonance and even profound revelations. We then taught those we have 'deprogrammed' how to dig through the b.s. propaganda to get to actual facts, especially through the Spanish-speaking b.s. (my wife is a polyglot, speaking 6 languages fluently and another 3 mostly fluently - she became completely fluent in Spanish in about 8 months... it took me over 3 years). Having developed long and strong ties to Cuba and some influential Cubans has helped those Cubans we've tried to deprogram in Florida, my wife's home State. I'll finally mention that for many the most convincing factor derived from both the film and a particular N.D.A., Roger Ailes, Rupert Murdoch and Dave Koch expected my wife to join Ailes to create a national propaganda network to subvert the American public's perception, promote their propaganda (while offering a 'shield' to obscure/hide what they're really doing), 'market' false slogans about what each party should be viewed as and systematically divide the nation, both geographically and (fabricated) ideologically. That 'network' of course became Fox News' launched after the "multifaceted, multi-decade plan" beta-test, Texas, worked, beta-tested for 2-3 presidential cycles. The network was launched after the "plan" went national in 1992-1994. My wife externally 'politely' rejected the offer (along with the offer to join Tom Hofeller, the 'Godfather' of gerrymandering, to create a gerrymandering 'industry' which eventually became 'Project Redmap'), but internally the rejection was visceral. They misconstrued my wife's political game theories with her actual political ideologies. I can't express how strongly my wife loves the idea of a strong America. All our homes, in Canada and in the U.S., has looked/looks like an Americana museum. Our two Canadian born and raised children knew more about the U.S. than probably 90% of most Americans... before they turned 18... 'Destroying' American democracy is anathema to my wife... and me. Our 'converts', having heard from the creators of Fox on film that it was planned and always created for propaganda and that 'conservatism' was always intended as a facade _[there is literally a slide from a slideshow on the film that started a presentation which was simply _*_"We are now CONservatives",_*_ which induced a lot of laughter]_ was the 'game-changer' for many of them. Knowing that everything Fox had fed them for years/decades was intended as propaganda revolted and angered many of them. We never 'confronted' them; we listened to them, all of them openly. We never told them they were 'wrong' or dumb. We embraced them, heard their worries and aspects of their lives and what led them to accept their ideologies. My wife explained how government worked, or how it doesn't work due to the 'plan'. Eventually it all became clear to almost all of them. Some took a couple of months of 'understanding' and conversation... sometimes sharing great meals, with my wife and I loving to cook for people, and 'drink' in many places - Florida, Georgia, Texas, Oregon, Virginia... ...even in B.C. Canada as we now live back here in ~'retirement', whatever that means, and in a very conservative district, we've even befriended our Conservative Federal representative, invited him for dinner at our home many times, actually now it's nearly every time he comes to town - he lives in another community... but can't vote for him any more due to the new 'Trumpy' leader. Frankly, I prefer to vote more left, but he has been the better representative for several years _(voting for the best person is a thing up here... until now because a vote for a rep is also a vote for the Federal leader... whose 'platform' is anathema to me and even my wife)..._ Sorry for the length, I type fast so once I get going... besides, being Canadian I'm legally and Constitutionally obligated to say 'sorry' for something... anything; if not, we get taxed extra - the "failing to say sorry tax"... Sorry....

It's a shame that evangelicals fell for the abortion swindle in the '70s, and it became the defining issue for them. Before Roe v. Wade, most Christians were pro-choice, because illegal abortions were such a horror show. We're returning to those horrible days with the repeal of Roe. The Bible's only reference to abortion is in favor of it (Numbers 5:11-31). Jesus had far more to say about divorce and religious hypocrisy than he ever did about abortion. But the far right made abortion into a single issue litmus test for a whole lot of voters. Meanwhile millions of children in this country go unhoused, unfed, and undereducated because we care more about fetuses than children.

I love the way you parse this out for them to think through this terrible problem. I will keep this in my folder to share with my infected family when possible. When Liz Cheney became my ally it was a miraculous day, and she is now called a Rino for exposing the Malignant One for what he is. I am in the process of reading the Bible from the beginning so I can understand what I was raised with and what it has become. The Old Testament tales of a wrathful god who is constantly threatening to kill or destroy everyone and everything is shocking. It is no wonder Evangelicals have dispensed with the inconvenient teachings of Jesus to defend themselves with this ancient brutality and judgement, and call it sacred scripture. Tim Alberta's book should be enough to cure Christians but he just becomes another Rino along with Russell Moore, David French, and anyone else who sees and speaks the truth. I laud you for doing this podcast and eagerly look forward to hearing it. Blessings.

The God who made us all is not worse than us, he is far better than us. God is a God of love, mercy, kindness and justice, in both Old and New Testament - as you read it I pray you will find who God really is. It is good to see that you are seeking the truth. Jesus said those who seek, find, and he also said he was the Truth. Jesus knew his Father God from the Old Testament, Handel wrote the Messiah based on some of the old Testament. The sermon on the mount is based a lot on the Old Testament, and then takes it further. As Isaiah said, Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. And Paul said, When we were still without strength, Christ died for the ungodly. The resurrection, the proven historical evidence of the Jews, and creation all testify to the God of the Bible being who he said he is. Does that mean there are not events that are difficult? Not at all, but if God is God, and the evidence says he is, then he is not worse than us, and he is not irrational but suprarational, and has a far better viewpoint than we do. Further, apologists have often made sense of what can seem difficult at first sight.

@@eottoe2001 I studied a lot of eschatology as well in over twenty years as an adult Christian (23-45). I was very interested and looked at all of the prophets, extracting lessons learned from my own relationship with God. I always thought Gog and Magog to mean China and Russia, but North Korea is between them. Look at all of the hoards that came across the steppes and invaded Europe from time to time. All the Barbarians came first as Rome collapsed. Then the Huns came and forced all the Barbarians into Rome. Fascinating story. They overthrew the kingdoms but kept the religion of Christianity. After that, the Arabs and Islam came, conquered what was left of Western Rome and gobbled up all of the Greek and Roman literature and knowledge and translated it to Arabic. Many scholars now believe that Revelations was written about the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, and 666 is Hebrew numerology for Nero. Josephus convinced Flavian Vespasian that he was the one who was prophesied to come as messiah. In so doing, he became the historian for the Vespasian dynasty. At the time, all Caesars claimed to be God in the Flesh, the Son of God, etc. It was trending in the Mid-Eastern religions at the time. And yet, 2000 years later, Revelations is the "vision of the future" of Christianity. Hundreds have come along preaching the end time for centuries. Between Jews, Christians, and Muslims, this single concept has been responsible for 2,000 years of bloodshed and war over Jerusalem. It is ridiculous and getting old. Trump is the most anti--Christian leader we have had, and I have been watching him progress in his adoption of horrendous principles. He wants to be like Putin, Kim Jong Un, and all the other dictators he fawns over. He is the kind that says to himself "Well, if someone has to be Satan, it might as well be me..."

@@Scott_works We could have a long conversation... The fall of Jerusalem makes more sense in terms of what Jesus said. As a young Christian growing up in Kentucky with the Disciples of Christ who were pretty mellow, I thought that the Baptist might have it right. That was the time of THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH and we grew up under the shadow of nuclear annihilation. I remember going through a few of those end-is-near moments, and then it hit me that they didn't know. There was one in 1984 and one in 1988, etc. I remember reading someone who said our brains aren’t designed to see into the future. There is a certain fear of that and fear of death that causes us to focus on the end of the world. I don’t know why, but I didn’t care after that. It hit me that concern for what happens in the future takes us off our game as Christians. I mean if you have trust and faith, it shouldn’t matter. I was talking to a young guy in South Dakota who was going on about the mark of the beast, I told him don’t worry. We are probably there. I held up my cell phone and credit card. He was terrified. You don’t know what he grew up in or what his minister is preaching. You know on the Jerusalem thing, my friend who was an Episcopalian explained to me in college but I wasn’t ready to listen to him, but it was 1984 and 1988 and I was done with it. After that, I read one book on the symbology of Revelations that was interesting, but still, it struck me as Jerusalem. However, if one believes this is true, then one needs to question the affinity between Trump and the hard right to Putin and Kim. I think it is the Revelation that the faithful won’t recognize Jesus. That might be an inference and it’s been a long time, but that is what I recall.

Specifically, pride, tribalism, and living in a right-wing media (and social?) bubble. I think at least part of it for some is just not wanting to admit they are wrong or be told they are wrong, especially since they have been innoculated by right wing media to view anyone who would tell them they are wrong though a lens of distrust, as the enemy.

I appreciate your earnestness, and you are clearly a person who thinks about what he believes in. However, I think it's time you face one thing; The evangelicals and all the other Trump supporters know and understand exactly who and what Trump is. They love him for it. He is what they want. I offer to you this; all the religious stuff is BS, it's a beard, it's a disguise. Trump is the real truth of what they believe.

I agree with you and isn’t it amazing that there are so many Americans who hate, who think bullying is appropriate, who condone sexual assault of women and cheating on spouses, and who are willing to overlook corruption and the mental illnesses of pathological liar, malignant narcissist, persecution complex, anti-social personality disorder, and lately, dementia? One might think that any one of these behaviors or conditions would be enough to turn people away from a politician, but in Trump’s case, even the combination of all of them hasn’t turned his supporters away.

I became a Christian when I was 12. I have read the Bible from cover to cover and have memorized numerous passages. Here's what I believe about abortion. Christian Nationalism is abhorrent to the US Constitution AND to the teachings of the New Testament. To be meaningful, following Christ and His teachings must be an individual choice. Being a Christian is about a relationship with Christ not about following a rule book, and there is no hierarchy of sin. If there were such a hierarchy, hate would be the greatest sin a Christian could commit. A Christian's charge is to serve Christ by loving and serving others NOT by ruling them. Enshrining Christian beliefs as law is destructive to the Church. Abortion bans are toxic to Christianity because they are a Christian belief not held by other major religions and not held by all Christians. The proper response toward women in a crisis pregnancy is to support them as they make the best choice for themselves. Moreover, the hateful, self-righteous rhetoric of many who oppose abortion is contributing to the decline of Christianity in the USA. The hatred displayed by many in the "pro-life" movement is crippling the reputation of Christianity. The way to win people to Christ is through showing them HIs unconditional love, and the path to Christ must be a personal choice. The self-righteousness and hate of many in the "pro-life" movement is both un-American and un-Christian and clearly compromises the ministry of the Church.

I appreciate someone in your position who is not afraid to speak up about Trump. You seem to recognize that he is truly just a bad person. But it is puzzling to me that you seem to not understand why he has such strong evangelical support. Evangelicals, generally speaking, are really proud and sure of the superiority of their belief system so they just have to tell everyone about it, right? But at the same time, they have to live in the real world where there actually is no divine magical intervention happening in their lives. I think this creates a partition in their minds. This partition structure is what allows normally decent people to also think and act immorally. It explains how they can also compartmentalize two different sets of opposing moral modes of operation. IMHO, at the end of the day, evangelicals' support of Trump does seem to show their own corrupt moral compass for what it is. And maybe some of them just aren't so great at being decent human beings after all. Respectfully.

I'm still a Christian, in some sense 'evangelical'... but I've observed some truth to your opinion here. There's something to our theology (or our white western interpretation of our Scriptures?) that makes it too easy to be these divided loyalty / double-minded / situational ethics kinds of people... I've heard it discussed like this by observers: on most personal or church or local communities levels we try to still be 'christian' in our ethics - but in the political or national level our ethics go out the window and so as a national entity, we are an awful 'person'. But I think this paradigm might even be dated... this may have been more true in the 90's, Bush, pre-trump era... a lot of evangelicals are actually becoming more 'whole' but not in a good way... the immoral ethics of trumpism seem to be slowly taking over and I think we'll see more awful behavior even at the personal level. It feels like it has to given the level of giving themselves over to the discipling of their new god/savior.

I'm in absolute agreement and I will never go back either. This whole Cult of Trump thing has caused me to change my mind about so so much. I'm a much more compassionate Christian now. It's caused me to rethink my stance on abortion and I've learned so much. The Jewish people don't even believe life begins at conception...but begins with the first breath. I surely didn't know that. Anyway, I'm a better person for running away from Trump and maga. I never was actually with them anyway but I'm an independent voter now. I'll probably vote for RFK Jr and even some democrats!!!

I think I was recommended this video because I have watched a few other videos from religious people that oppose Donald Trump. I really appreciate that you put your voice out here to dispel the idea that all Evangelicals or conservative Christians support Trump and MAGA. I also especially appreciate the calm, rational way that you make your case. I would say that there is a third type of Trump supporter. On one level, there is overlap between this type of Trump supporter and the two groups you describe. But there are also some factors that separate them enough to warrant their own category. They don't particularly like him or believe that he is a good person. But they do believe the claims of the right-wing media that he is being targeted unfairly by Democrats and the "deep state". These are people that are highly selective with their sources of information. They choose almost exclusively sources that align with their beliefs, and those sources then reinforce those beliefs in a feedback loop. Put simply, they fall for conspiracy theories. One of the hallmarks of conspiracy theories (and a surefire way to recognize when it is a conspiracy theory and not a rational position) is when attempts to counter the claims turn into attacks on the sources of the counterarguments as being part of the conspiracy. For example, I ask a question of one such person in my life: Me: If there was so much fraud in the 2020 election, surely Republicans in positions to investigate it officially would have turned up something big and prosecuted it by now. The response: Well, that must be because they were compromised somehow. I would say that you are up against some deep aspects of human psychology that are very difficult to overcome. Both the conspiracy theorists that are not quite true Trump fans and the ones picking Trump because they think it is a binary choice between Trump and Democrats think the way they do because they fear the Democrats winning. The conspiracy theorists add in the wrinkle of believing that unseen, nefarious forces are at work behind the scenes making it this way. When you say it is liberating to realize that you don't have to choose what amounts to a lesser of two evils in the voting booth, I think it is because you are liberated from the idea that the other side is evil. You accept that if that side wins, it isn't evil winning. It is just that more Americans wanted a different candidate with different policies than what you want. And that is okay. If their candidates and policies are the wrong ones, then you'll have other chances for a majority of voters to see things your way and change how they vote. That is, you will as long as democracy itself is protected as a priority higher than any policy. edit: Wow, I never realized how often I write "their" instead of "there"

It's funny because I did the same thing in 2016. I had always voted republican, but I could not under any condition bring myself to vote for Trump. I wasn't inclined to vote for Hilary either so I voted for Gary Johnson. That was a huge mistake. One I regretted every day for 4 years. I voted for Biden in 2020 without any qualms. I have lost all respect for the Republican party. What I see now in DC doesn't even resemble the party of conservative values I grew up learning about. It's not even about party politics anymore. It's about getting as far away from the individuals who have given Trump the opportunity to do what he has done to our country.
