His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

I had a German Shepherd that was the most amazing tracker I’ve ever seen. I, too, never took it to the level that she could have excelled but I stimulated her by regularly tracking my young daughter and her friends. It was a game of hide and seek. We used walkie talkies and my pup would track them for miles. So much fun. So rewarding for my girl called Magic.

"Leadership is love". So true. Some people confuse leadership with "louder-ship" where you feel you need to strong arm or yell at a dog to correct it. You don't, and there's a better way to do it. You want to guide the dog's behaviour, and that's done with understanding. I have a GSD who is very much like your Sully. Once the fetching stick comes out, he's locked in and will do anything you ask. Perfect walkthrough of the methodology behind this play/training. I don't even really call it "training" as I find every game works like training.

I think you might be one of the best communicators I have ever seen or heard. The way you teach is incredible!

Leadership is love. That's a good one to drill into us. For me it's counterintuitive to since your dog is "a friend" and you would never treat a human friend that way. It's great to realize your role as a dog's "friend" is to be a great leader.

Beautiful, what an elegant and smart dog, and great demonstration of how it's this mental stimulation that tires them out far more than just uncontrolled running and romping.

I've watched a lot of your videos whilst training my Border Collie puppy and your knowledge is by far the best of any trainer or behaviourist. Concise, efficient training with a deep knowledge of the dogs mind and the bond between human and dog. So much better than anything else I've seen, cheers.

Fantastic video! I love your approach to creating a perfect canine companion rather than a perfect trick dog. There's nothing wrong with tricks but I believe that what most of us really want is a well-mannered canine companion and tricks are usually a secondary requirement (if required at all).

I agree brain games are one of the best ways to tire your dog out and I love how you're so passionate about wanting the best for your dog and the dogs in your care. Would you be interested in a way of training the wait without having to use the lead? It's not quick, but it definitely uses the dogs brain.

My youngest dog is the queen of fetch. I will introduce this into her routine to take care of that energy. Excellent advice!

Love your videos. I follow several trainers on Youtub. In my 12 months or so of training my 2 pups I have never use the word "STAY." Sit means SIT, down means DOWN and stand means STAND until I tell i tell them break. I also don't have them drop the toy 3 feet in front of me. I have them put it in my hand I LOVE the heel before sending them to retrieve. This is a great move to use when playing. You have some awesome videos, Thank you for all you do!

I mainly watched to hear Will's falsetto "Oh good booyyyy!!!" My Miniature Labradoodle lives to play fetch, but her mum was a working Lab, so it's not really surprising. Aside from food, ball is all for her - her focus on the ball is insane.

The Poodle genes also highly contribute to that as they were bred to be working retrieval dogs.

This might be a good time to talk about *STICKS* (especially given the thumbnail.) It was a simple game of fetch a couple months ago. Dexter (our cocker spaniel) had decided that on fetching the stick for the tenth time that he would sit and chew it. As soon as we saw him doing that we told him to drop the stick, which he did, then we carried on with our walk. We didn't realise there was any issue until he woke us for attention in the middle of the night, demonstrating unusual signs of discomfort and pain. We took him to the vet at first light, who scanned him, discovered a critical problem, and admitted him for emergency surgery. They had to cut him open and remove some bits of stick that had gotten lodged in his gut, which were presenting an immediate risk to his life through internal hemorrhaging. So as not to scare everyone, it's rare for dogs to have difficulty digesting sticks, but the more they do it, the greater the risk becomes. Particularly if they, like Dexter, don't chew their food properly. Since then, we always use a dog-friendly toy for fetch, and we've trained Dexter that sticks are bad things that he shouldn't pick up, retrieve, eat, or otherwise engage with.

Love! I’ve used basic commands and fetch as tools for lots of fun. Roll over before fetch as reward, play dead, play dead way over there and stay/break but… I usually have my dog in front of me looking up not using heel so We’ve got a new challenge !

I do this with my pup dobbie all the time! After our long walks we play fetch with a stick or ball in our front yard before we go in!! I have her sit stay and then break go get it go find!!!! She loves it!!! Still working on a full ‘drop’ from her…it’s been a process with a drop but hopefully yes we will get there soon!!! Great video TY!!

Great info. My dog newly adopted 7 year old dog is not food motivated so this may be a good way to teach basic commands and get her to engage more into me than the toy, not to mention tire out our active 3 year old.

100% true. I did exactly same things with my beauceron. Another nice mental&phisical exercise was searching for a hidden treat or a toy in the garden. If my beauceron could not find it, the dog used to stop or come bit closer to me and look for my instructions - Pointing a directions by a hand. When i said "no" & pointed into another direction - dog was searching through a newly pointed area. The tricky thing though was to hide a toy/treat in such a way to make it not so easy to find :-)

Good boy. My Golden Retriever Bella has that same intensity when retrieving. She's also an excellent listener. When I come home I feed her, a treat and out to play some fetch just to get some of that energy out.

Mate, great vid. I watch videos from people like yourself and generally take an interest in any dog training stuff I see and I seem to have picked up the importance of the dog trusting you enough as being incredibly important. I too have a sound (sharp intake of breath through teeth) the is literally an "interrupt" for anything he is doing. I have also found out that sometimes when I am lazy or tired and am not as consistent as I should be the dog picks up on this and is generally less manageable,

The quick sounds helps me with Sky. Just breaking the concentration she has on whatever she’s looking when I’m trying to talk to her.

I play frisbee every day with my 6 year old female black lab. She's 75 lbs lean and ripped, and well behaved. It took a while for me to get her to pay attention to me and not the frisbee and I believe that's key as far as discipline goes.

Oh hahaha well done, my 11 mth GS Lexi will stay and leave it until told 'ok' then go for it, grab it then bring it back but refuses point blank to drop it! 😂 She'll keep jabbing it into my hand but as soon as I tell her to drop it and try taking it from her she'll twist her head away. I've tried everything to get her to drop (food doesn't work, more interested in the ball) no matter how many times I tell her we can't play until she drops it 😆 Nvm she's great at everything else.

OMG Will Atherton...Genius. Our 10 month cockerpoo Ted is into adolescence and I wanted to extend training. This was ideal. I sowed the seed of this exercise before morning walk. He has an exercise/training walk pm. As usual he wakes at 8pm wanting a tug play. So decided to divert him onto this extended fetch routine. He not only nailed the return to heel, drop but also stay after several tries, he's now back to sleep!. I plan to do this a couple more days indoors then extend outdoors. Thanks Will.

yes! yes! yes! fetch with its variations is a life saver game life for my high energy and high anxiety rescue. and a great time saver when i need him to expend some energy fast. i do demand him to bring the ball precisely at my feet.

@@willathertoncaninetraining always welcome! I have seen very few discriminating working lines on videos and thats a huge winner for me. It happens that I have an ultra high drive and destructive Dutch Shepherd. I am getting on this stuff once I am back home from vacation.

I love how you teach. You make me smile 😃 I have no experience in training to this extent. But I feel like with your guidance I have a little confidence in doing some training with my puppy.

That slip lead isnt as easy as you make it seem. But with experience and pratice it becomes more easy findind the correct pup of pressure is what is the hardest. Just enough to snap them out of the bad behavior we dont want but my pitbull is hard headed lol shell get it i have confidence in her. Thank you Fenirir

My standard poodle loves fetch, catch, find it and food. I use all four toward my advantage. He gets good and tired which I appreciate.

It’s very essential Dwight, the dog needs to be able to identify a clear difference between praise and correction - although I’ll agree it’s not something you’ll tend to wanna do down the pub with the boys 🤣

Love this exercise! My shepherd/retriever mix. Sit stay wait break is great. He stops halfway on he's way back, drops the ball and starts sniffing around. So I get him to sit up and wait on the bench while I do the drill with my older dog. After I break him, he works better. He has a different drive than my female. He would rather play with other dog.

To add another level you can pop the dog between your legs facing backwards. Throw the toy in front of you then set the dog off to find it. That brings in its nose and you can add directional control - dogs love that level of game and builds the relationship as directional control is two way.

I have a 7 month old springer spaniel that is never tired. Her jumping and biting for attention all day long is getting really enough now. Thanks for the tips on mental stimulation. I'm going to try this. I doubt she'll be as good as that, but if I can get her to stop biting at least, that will be a good thing. Thank you. 🙏

In my experience the BEST part about getting a dog as a puppy is being able to give verbal correction significant value so less physical correction is needed later. Incredibly pleasant to be able to have a dog totally reliable off leash. Just linking a little "uh uh" or "tsst" to a bit of spacial pressure and directing them to your eyes is enough for a pup to figure out that noise means they needs to pause on whatever impulse they have and look to you for further instruction. With a TON of repetition catching them just as that impulse is felt - they can even learn to look for instruction on impulse without the verbal que. Sounds small but it meant i could go into the woods and trust him not to run off chasing a deer because he looked to me to see if it was okay. It also meant that at a dog park when a fight broke out and other dogs get a pack mentality to join - mine without even needing to be called ran straight to me looking for instruction. If they look to you under these super high instinctual level situations than you know they absolutely respect your role in the pack and it's the strongest bond you can imagine.

i've never owned such a dog that wouldn't run off at the first thing that caught its eye. the least likely one to end up trained to be super obedient is my current pup, who is my second puppy. she's far better than she was when i got her back in late august of last year, but she was such a monster from the start that improvement was the only possibility.

Great video, my 3 year old spanner gets this pretty well, however, with slip lead on or just a light contact he will stay and not go…..perfect, take the slip off or no contact and that’s a different story 😂 I’m thinking just keep going and he will learn??

Stonnie-- I'm in Kentucky and have my first puppy, I've watched almost all your videos and take my little guy on puppy sized adventures all the time. Fenrir-- I'm a behavior analyst too! I have watched almost all your videos too! you guys should collaborate, it's been great to learn from both of you. You should do this in Lousiville and let me come and bring my dog, the trainers here are mean and I won't go to them anymore.

I have a lovely little 3 yr.old Pomeranian that I got when he was two. It's difficult for me to walk so I mostly exercise him by allowing him to chase a flirt pole which he loves. One afternoon I wanted to see if he would fetch. Was thrilled to discover he was more than happy to chase a toy and bring it back. Unfortunately he recently has decided not to fetch any more. 😞. He will obligingly chase his toy but won't even pick it up much less bring it back to me. I'm stumped now as how to get him back on track, fetching again. 🤦. I have to be sitting when working with him, so I'm limited in what I can do to entice him.
