One of reasons to merge your flat colors is bc it's easier to control your shading by setting that new color layer as your reference layer when using the wand tool. if a color needs to be changed, select the flat color, adjust, done.

Been there, done that. The phase where you aren't sure if it'll be permanent or get changed. As my confidence increased, I started using fewer layers.

My way of drawing is: 1.Sketch out my plan 2.Do the linework 3.Add Base colors on separate sections 4.Separately shade each section 5.Merge everything I will definitely try shading everything first, and see what happens :)

Hey man, I've been learning how use BW value shading in one layer just like you, and mix it with your gradient map coloring method. I daresay that it makes drawing more fun for me now, it's fun, simple, and effective, I never thought my drawing would look like the way they are now. You've helped me expand my horizons, so thanks for your class, Teacher!

The shading values is the cursed thing for alot of us Beginners tho.. And I heard nowadays people avoid linearts and just painting all the way, for a faster process and not cell shading. But for me, linearts still have a very special place in my heart 😅

Also try Color blend mode for the colors over the shading and see if you like it better than Multiply. Personally, I think it looks better. Multiply leaves the shadows desaturated, Color does not.
