The Simple Guide to Ambleside and Waterhead in the English Lake District

Visiting Ambleside and Waterhead in the English Lake District? Want to know what there is to see and do? Our simple guide has the answers to questions posed by many first time visitors, as well as regular returnees.
In this video you'll find information many travel vlogs tend to ignore. Like how easy it is to get to Ambleside and Waterhead in the English Lake District, how easy it is to park, and can you get to Ambleside and Waterhead by public transport. Plus we'll reveal what you'll find when you wander around town. As well as covering the main tourist attractions, such as Windermere Lake Cruises and the Galava Roman Fort and the Armitt Museum, we'll also answer the simple basic questions like is there somewhere where the kids can let off steam, is there a cinema or theatre, or are the streets just full of gift shops?
We also answer the simple question of are there any good Lake District Walks that can be completed from Ambleside. As you will see, there are quite a few, with the Fairfield Horseshoe, Wansfell, and Loughrigg all within easy reach.
You'll also learn about local amenities, such as churches, medical services for both people and pets, plus whether there's a post office or bank.
Note that none of the businesses or attractions included have paid for inclusion, the video is NOT a recommendation, and other attractions or businesses selling similar products may well exist.
Businesses and attractions opening times vary according to season, so please check opening times and availability with any business or attraction you want to visit before travelling.

Thank you. It is a nice, friendly little town I always find. I particularly enjoyed the garden and woodland sections during shooting. I'm not a big garden fan normally, but it was just so relaxing.

Great to see you back out again Eric and what a very comprehensive guide to Ambleside, so essential views for someone wanting to visit for the first time. Never know about the Roam Fort there or Stagshore Gardens either and some great historical information, that I will no doubt be using myself at some time in the future, as I usually do! Another great watch, cheers Alan

Thank you Alan. A slightly different style for me with this one. Shorter clips, more talking, plus I'm not on camera. I was trying to get it all into just 10 minutes but there is too much. The Roman fort has been tidied up a bit in the last few years, with new signage. It used to be surrounded by a fence, partly to stop damage from the cows that graze in the field. Stagshaw Gardens is lovely at this time of year, it always makes me envious when I see the plants there and then come home to my measly little plot. I think I have the world's smallest azaleas! I've just been watching your Rannerdale video. I was over there myself last week to look at the bluebells and walk to the top of the fell. Had the same problem as you with parking. It gets busier every year. I wonder if the likes of me and thee are part of the problem, telling people about these wonderful places that they then go and visit themselves. I'm not sure that we make that much of a difference. Now the grandchildren are old enough to attend school every day I'm starting to get out a bit more, so maybe see you on the fells again at some point. In the meantime, take care and keep those videos coming. Atb Eric

Nice to see your video again Sir… Will be back there again somewhere Autumn this year if not 1st quarter of next year… Will have another go at Loughrigg Fell though I climbed that already in March 2020… Climbed a lower peak that close to Waterhead in 2022, the one that have a wee tarn close to it… Definitely will Keswick & Grasmere again…

Great video Eric, thanks. And you can learn something every day. I've been to Ambleside many times and driven through it many more but, I did not know about the roman remains. I do enjoy your guides to the towns around the Lakes but must admit that I yearn for your walks up t' fell as well. Thanks for the upload.

Thank you. Actually, I mentioned the Roman remains in my first Loughrigg video, 'Around Loughrigg, although that was 11 years ago when I just started out. Plus, it was only a passing mention as we looked down on them from the path up to Todd Crag. You'll be pleased to know that I've a couple of fell walks in the pipeline, but I also enjoy making the town videos, and as I have not yet found a cure for ageing I have to admit that they are easier to shoot. The key for me is finding the balance.

Thank you. I know he loved Loughrigg. He was also a fan of the Armitt museum in Ambleside, but then being a museum curator himself he would probably appreciate the work involved in the upkeep of such a place.
