So Higglytown Heroes wasn't just some show where matryoshka dolls did some random stuff, the story behind each episode was there'd be a problem to solve, and then a hero would show up, showcasing different occupations and what they do, so the purpose of the show was to get kids to start thinking about the careers they want to do when they grow up. For these hero roles, they had a whole bunch of guest stars like Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack, Wilt, and Earth King) as a lifeguard, Jeff Bennett (Johnny Bravo, Jacques von Hämsterviel, and Dexter & Dee Dee's dad) as an auctioneer, Raven-Symoné as a playground monitor, Joey Fatone as a bulldozer operator, Rob Paulsen as a barber, Serena Williams as a snowplow driver, etc! The ones that did the Higglytown Heroes theme song was They Might Be Giants who also worked on the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song, the Malcolm in the Middle theme song, and a cover of There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow for Meet the Robinsons! Book of Pooh was the first to use Shadowmation developed by creator Mitchell Kriegman which was later used in the PBS series It's a Big Big World! Work for It's a Big Big World was done at a studio in the Hamptons on Long Island at an airport in Wainscott. Bear in the Big Blue House and Out of the Box were both filmed at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in NYC, the same place Sesame Street has been filmed since 1993! It's also the same place shows like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (which was another role Lynne Thigpen was known for as the ACME chief), Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, seasons one through four of Between the Lions, Oobi, and The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss were all filmed! In Stanley, the voice of Dennis the fish is Charles Shaughnessy, better known as Mr. Sheffield in The Nanny, while Elsie the cat is Hynden Walch who's Princess Bubblegum and Starfire, and Lester (the one talking at 14:25) is Philece Sampler who voiced the elder version of Toph in Legend of Korra!

19:28 Higglytown Heroes would enlighten kids about various jobs adults had and how they contribute to society. Whenever there was a problem, they would be "saved" by the appropriate "hero": if there was an issue with food, they'd be helped by a chef. An issue involving swimming? They'd get help from a lifeguard. Zookeeper, mechanic, tailor, truck driver, operator, they wouldn't solely rely on the typical jobs you'd expect a child to already have an idea about in these kinds of programs. They'd even bring up more obscure jobs which is where the series shined IMO.

Slight correction according to Noel Macneal (the puppeteer and voice behind Bear from Bear in the big blue house) the real reason the show ended was because Disney felt the show had its run and they wrapped production before the unfortunate passing of Lynne Thigpen. I actually got the chance to meet Noel and he seemed like a really nice guy, and he talked about the infamous Bear and Big Bird picture.

Yeah as you mentioned, the puppetry in The Book of Pooh is based on bunraku puppetry. Bunraku's history goes as far back as the 16th century, but the origins of its modern form can be traced to around the 1680s after the playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon began a collaboration with the chanter Takemoto Gidayu, who established the Takemoto puppet theater in Osaka in 1684. Three kinds of performers take part in a bunraku performance, the Ningyōtsukai or Ningyōzukai (puppeteers), the tayū (chanters), and shamisen musicians. The heads and hands of traditional puppets are carved by specialists, while the bodies and costumes are often constructed by puppeteers. The heads can be quite mechanically sophisticated. In plays with supernatural themes, a puppet may be constructed so that its face can quickly transform into that of a demon. Less complex heads may have eyes that move up and down, side to side or close, and noses, mouths, and eyebrows that move. Controls for all movements of parts of the head are located on a handle that extends down from the neck of the puppet and are reached by the main puppeteer inserting their left hand into the chest of the puppet through a hole in the back of the torso. The main puppeteer, the omozukai, uses their right hand to control the right hand of the puppet, and uses their left hand to control the puppet's head. The left puppeteer, known as the hidarizukai or sashizukai, depending on the tradition of the troupe, manipulates the left hand of the puppet with their own right hand by means of a control rod that extends back from the elbow of the puppet. A third puppeteer, the ashizukai, operates the feet and legs. All but the most minor characters require three puppeteers, who perform in full view of the audience, generally wearing black robes. Usually a single chanter recites all the characters' parts, altering his vocal pitch and style in order to portray the various characters in a scene. Occasionally multiple chanters are used. The chanters sit next to the shamisen player. Some traditional puppet theaters have a revolving platform for the chanter and shamisen player, which rotates to bring replacement musicians in for the next scene.

40:21 Speaking of Bluey, it has a surprising amount of connections to Playhouse Disney. The creator, Joe Brumm, worked as a freelance animator and one of the shows he worked on was Charlie and Lola. In fact, I would not be surprised if the episode “Dragon” took some inspiration from that show. Of course, the biggest connection is with The Wiggles since both programs are based in Australia. The band ensemble from 2013 to 2021 appeared in an episode where they had a picture taken and are called “The Waggles”, because they’re dogs, and Anthony Field, who as of typing this is the only remaining band member from when it started, does a couple of voice roles.

I watched an ungodly amount of Little Einsteins as a kid. I was too little to remember a lot of the 90s Playhouse shows (save for those that got rerun all of the time) but I vividly remember patting to get the spaceship going. I remember being upset when Playhouse got taken off the air. Disney Junior had plenty of fine programming, I guess (I was really too old for it, but my little brothers weren't, so I watched plenty of those shows) but I missed my Playhouse friends.

The Wiggles were single-handedly the greatest highlight about Playhouse Disney. As a small child, whenever one of their tv shows or music videos start to air, I immediately got hooked to them. They were the reason why I wanted to watch Playhouse Disney, and later PBS Sprout. There’s just something about them that really made them special. Plus they had a fascinating history during their career in children’s music and entertainment throughout the 90’s and 2000’s.

A lot of these shows and shorts on Playhouse Disney are pretty decent back in my early years when I was a kid, but I think the one that really got me hyped the most was The Wiggles. I even went to a few concerts live and in person with my family! Plus, I even shook Anthony and Murray's hands a few times when I went to their shows. They were so immensely appealing to me as much as all the other millennials and Gen-Z's alike while growing up as a child. And I gotta say, even while The Wiggles still remain popular to this very day, I'm glad I got to be a part of it. 🤩💖

I KNEW that Little Einsteins was also gonna be listed here too and that I had such a soft and enjoyed heart and feeling watching that show since when I was like 4. Those iconic (yet underrated) 4 kids were the real reason why I wanted to learn more about talented classical artists and classical music from the classic era. It felt like such a smart and intelligent show for everyone. I even also remember having a crush on Leo from the show as a kid because I always thought he looked so handsome, haha. (This may sound rlly dumb, but like if I also knew that he secretly listens to Red by Taylor Swift and that his favorite track would be All Too Well because of the line “You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin-sized bed”) But I’m happy that there’s still a few people out there who still remember Little Einsteins. 💜❤️

15:35 - I'm sorry to say but it's quite a bit sadder than a "Bandmate" of theirs passing away. Anthony's older brother and future Wiggles manager Paul Field was the "The Cockroaches" lead singer. It was Paul's baby Bernadette who died of SIDS (Sudden-Infant-Death-Syndrome) after having lived only a few months. This is partly what inspired Anthony to enter early childhood education and then get back into music by forming The Wiggles with the group's 1991 debut specifically being dedicated to Bernadette's memory. To this day, the Wiggles are still spokesman for Red Nose Day, an annual Australian that rises money for research to end SIDS. There's the beginning part of your Wiggles retrospective for you.

I still wish they kept the name Playhouse Disney, totally not because I'm nostalgic

Hello. Good morning. My name is Brian López. So, you know why I do not always love the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episode, "Road Rally"? Number one, it has the part where Mickey says maybe. And number two, it is too much of a Toodles torture episode, if I do say so myself.

So much nostalgia! I loved Handy Manny, maybe not as much as Bob The Builder [ when I was little, every time we went to Chuck E Cheese, I HAD to go on the Bob The Builder ride], but it was still amazing. I loved all these shows but I was OBSESSED with Bear In The Big Blue House and The Wiggles when I was little. The songs and stories still hold up today!

Here are a few things I'd like to say. 1. The Imagination Movers are not only another band, but they also sang Playhouse Disney's 2007 theme song, so in a way, they're kinda like the secondary mascots of the channel. 2. I never knew this would be how I found out Carl Wheezer & Joker were in Tasty Time with ZeFronk. 3. Go Baby was animated by Little Airplane Productions, AKA the people behind Wonder Pets & Oobi. 4. As someone who watched Playhouse Disney in its last few years, I don't remember ANYTHING about Lou & Lou Safety Patrol. 5. Ooh and Aah are kinda like the mascots of 2007-2011 Playhouse Disney, as they would be the ones to tell us what show was coming up next. 6. My Friends Tigger & Pooh was a Playhouse Disney exclusive. When Disney Junior came around, there wasn't a SINGLE rerun to be found. Shows that ended before the rebrand like Higglytown Heroes, Little Einsteins, hell I think even PB&J Otter & Charlie and Lola got reruns, but nothing for Tigger & Pooh. 7. Handy Manny & Special Agent Oso get the honor of being the first Playhouse Disney shows to have a crossover together. 8. WTF was that horrible framerate for all the Handy Manny footage?!

18:16 I have a strong hunch that this show was the primary inspiration for Amazing Digital Circus, an indie animated series on KZread. At least, with both having a colorful, circus-esque theme and a female clown/jester protagonist.🤔🤡🎪

Holy moly it’s amazing how many of these shows I had forgotten about but now distinctly remember watching. So much of my childhood that had faded from memory until now. Thanks for the retrospective!
