I have three silent plant killers. One is a tuxedo named Knuckles, one is all black named Crammy, and one is a cinnamon tabby named Tiger. They've snuffed a good dozen over the years.

Inspired by this I just googled the effects of air freshners and perfumes on plants. I found a 20 year old study that says, yep, plants don't like whiffy sprays. The "same air freshener [was sprayed] at different distances, i.e., 30, 60 and 90 cm. from the tip of the plant. Results showed that there was a significant decrease in the chlorophyll and protein content of plants exposed at different distances."

Cool thanks for sharing
That explains the peace lily that I just recently slowly killed, regardless of the care I gave it. I had it right next to my fruit bowl that was always housing apples. Now i know.
Except for the bananas I just refrigerate my produce…I prefer they ripen slower as I am the only one that eats them it gives me time before they go bad.
Huh! I have some bananas sitting about 2-3' above my veggie plant tower. And those yellow leaves weren't making sense... until now. Thanks Sheffield!

Ok but can we talk about that fruit bowl? Amazing.
Fantastic tip with the Ethylene absorbers! Not only will it protect the kitchen plants, but maybe my bananas won't over ripen before I can eat them all! 😂

Well this explains a lot.The market I work in keeps flowers and orchids right next to produce . And they keep dying quickly.
Interesting! Fortunately I don't keep any healthy food in the house 😅 lol

So this is why my Angel wing Begonia, which is four feet from my fruit basket, has been losing its leaves for months now! They are now divorced. Thanks for the advice!
I knew bananas ripened fruit and veg quicker, but I'm surprised about the plants!!! I keep missing fruits or cupboards in the fridge when I buy them. Great info thank you
I had no idea gases from fruit and vegetables could damage or kill plants 😮 Thanks for the info 😀🇨🇦

Thank you for that. Somehow makes sense for a plant native to the same kind of tropical environment where ripening bananas might be found.
Thanks for a uniquely informative video. I knew about ethylene - I use it for ripening as you described, but I'd never thought of its effect on other "vegetable life" in my home. A real eye-opener!

Ethylene is so annoying. I'm always going on about it round here. Didn't know it gets at the houseplants, though. This answers a few of the plant mysteries we often have. Thanks for this. 😁👍❤️

I keep a kalanchoe mother of thousands, a Carolina Reaper and a micro-grape tomato in a 50 gallon greenhouse aquarium.. The kalanchoe has a fringe of beautiful, thick little pups on every leaf, both the mother and pups are green with a pink edge.. just gorgeous The pepper and tomato are struggling, lol.. they really want to be outside
Your solution of just hucking everything in the bin makes me giggle every time lol I wish i could solve all of my problems like that :P Edit to add: im surprised i havent heard this tip before! 🤯

Nice to hear I won't kill my plants because of a fruit bowl😄 I prefer cold vegetables and fruits so I keep them in a fridge, happy to know it also helps my plants👍 Oh, and I love bananas❤
Goodness - who’d have thought?! Don’t like bananas and will keep other fruit in the fridge in future thanks.

I've read you can wrap the stem ends of bananas in saran wrap/cling wrap to keep the gas from over-ripening your other fruit. That's something to consider with plants I guess

I don’t know about that I bought bananas for my grandchild and the stems are wrapped and she left them in the bag she hasn’t eaten one, I walked into the kitchen and I can smell them 😖 I don’t like bananas and I really don’t like the smell of them. They’re going in the bin if they aren’t eaten soon. Blessings 💚💜

I put my unripe tomatoes in a paper bag with one banana then close. After 3 days, the tomatoes are ripe. Ethylene gas is a natural ripening agent.

I discovered that leaving anything other than citrus out, the mice came in. I've blocked everything I can see, but nothing but citrus in the fruit bowl. I need an extra fridge though.

All three of the supermarkets by me have their flowers in the produce section less than 15 feet from the fruit. Im suspicious if they actually know its harmful because none of their plants do well and their cut flowers never last.
Let’s get a video on all you plant gadgets, tools, and anything else you use for your plants.
I now have the best excuse why I don’t eat fruit. (Besides the fact that I don’t like fruit!)
PLEASE could you talk about why 🌳 olive 🫒 trees 🌳 drop leaves like mad?
Avocados to turn them black quick, put them in a paperbags
Can you please make a video about your begonias? Your seems to be thriving but mine is nearly dead xd
Yet another reason to hate bananas!
I have 2 Plants within 2 foot of a counter I keep bananas on. these 2 plants seem to get yellowing leaves more than any other plant I have?? For now I moved the Bananas about 10 foot away to see if it helps at all....

hi mr sheffield , i have a very very small cutting of tradescantia , i had it in water & then kind of neglect it & all the water dried out but it clung onto life & it’s STILL ALIVE! i watched some of your other videos about them & i put it in dirt last night. do you have anymore tips for it to thrive & grow better? you said water when dry correct? & indirect sun? ALSO, it’s so small it’s in a medicine shot glass , so i repot when the vines get longer or when its roots develop more? it has the tiniest root.

Me: sat here, wondering why my golden pothos hanging above my kitchen counter is going droopy and yellow 😢 Mr. Sheffield 🦸🏻♂️
@lynnstlaurent6789
3 ай бұрын
My golden pothos is less than a metre from my bananas. I buy organic which have a waxy paper on the stem and they ripen much slower. I wonder if that’s the difference. I just moved a little succulent bc the pothos is taking over the area. I also replaced my pot lights with grow bulbs, which would also make a big difference.
