The Signs of the Time… Message by His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrius

In today's sermon, His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrius of America emphasizes the importance of holiness and becoming saints. He highlights the willingness of many throughout history to sacrifice their lives for Christ and the church. It serves as a reminder to understand the eternal implications of life and to strive for spiritual growth and righteousness. The saints understood the true nature of this life and its eternal implications, which most people fail to grasp. We, while we still have the opportunity, we need to act before it is too late.
Metropolitan Demetrius gives us examples of the current state of affairs explaining that In the midst of troubled times, God may send signs to encourage the faithful. He then follows with a dramatic example.
Just before COVID hit, a miraculous event occurred in Greece involving one of our a parishioners who was in a helicopter crash. The helicopter flying in fog got caught in telephone wires, resulting in a terrible crash that killed five people. However, one person survived. She had an icon of the Mother of God and other holy artifacts with her. As the helicopter was falling to the ground, the mother of God herself rescued her by in an instant unbolting her chair and lifting her to a safe place. The Mother of God then placed her facing away from the tragedy so she would not be further traumatized and stayed with her until help arrived.
While together, the Mother of God explained that she was performing this miracle because she wanted to strengthen the faithful due to the approaching end-times events.
Metropolitan Demetrius concludes by encouraging us to pray to our holy patron, Saint John, to help us in these very difficult times, to remain steadfast in the holy Orthodox faith, and to live a life of repentance.
The Sermon was delivered by His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrius of America at Saint John of San Francisco Orthodox Monastery, on the Feast of the Recovery of the Relics of Saint John of San Francisco, September 29/October 12, 2023, Cobleskill, NY.

I have learned to distract myself from distraction with a prayer rope. It's still a battle, after all here I am, but a great help. I use The Jesus Prayer and Psalmody, especially Psalm 50. All-in-all it has cleansed my mind a great deal more than I was even aiming for.

A priest once told me God is like fire. If you are not like fire, if you are not as a flame, you will be burned by God. This is a crude analogy of Theosis. But if you are not like God, his presence will not be pleasant. If you are like God, it will be no different when in his presence.

Absolutely spot on message, Eminence! As father of 8 with 15 grandchildren, I ask for your prayers that their focus be on Jesus and not the world! It is indeed THIS is the core path to heaven: that we truly LIVE the Gospel as our central concern! You developed this message so well ... exactly what's been of increasing concern to my dear wife and me: i.e., never take Christ off our mind! I am powerfully edified by your expressing of this message. The older I get, the more I see how amateurish I was in raising our children ... I want them all to be aware of the Final Judgment, and to be receiving God into their every thought, word and deed. You brought out the reality of Satan distracting us from connecting with God ... God bless you for knowing our need to hear this message again and again. After all, we know this to be true, yet we let ourselves become preoccupied with the superficial things of life that God has clearly promised to take care of for us! So a sincere BRAVO and heartfelt "Thank you, I needed that!" I call upon the Blessed Mother to bless you. She personally took me under her care from early childhood, saved me from 2 shark attacks, a dozen car accidents, and the perils of the hippie movement when I was spiritually naive/undeveloped. I found myself asking her - quite out of the blue - for the gift of poetry as I approached my 16th Birthday, and 1 year later it arrived and is with me still! She just kept on saving me from great sadness and confusion, led me on to God's sweet destiny that He had for me, and found me a radiant, holy young woman to be my wife of 47 years! She is our family's patron. You are a great pastor of souls! You lit a candle for all of us to hear in these overtly dark times. I thank you with all my heart ... and my wife and I will include you in our prayers from now on. We are converts to Orthodoxy from the RC breakaway church - and so joyous at all we receive in it. We are committed to living God's destiny for us, and my heroic, radiant wife keeps living the Gospel, wise and always caring for all, lovingly holy. She never lies and lives the Gospel asI never thought possible! God is joy itself! It is so perfectly natural in loving God to extend our love to His family... the saints and angels. It in no way detracts from our awe and gratitude to God to rejoice and connect with all the members of His great family!

@@KallyKafritsasThis is the Orthodox Church, not an evangelical american TV "preacher". "Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel." 1 Cor 4:15 Saint Paul is quite literally calling himself their spiritual father. Christ is not saying "never, ever call someone your Father", for what would you have, that I would be calling my biological Father by his first name? Christ is saying no man should replace the Father in heaven, for there is but One Father of us all. Christ is not saying no one should be called a spiritual father - which St. Paul does in no uncertain terms. Put the nonesense of self- interpretation and splintering of the Church and enter into the one Holy Church, the Bride of Christ. The Church was not "hidden" until some 1,600 or 1,800 years after the crucifixion, it was established at Pentecost by real, living, men who laid hands upon their successors. We can trace all of our Bishops from the Apostles themselves. The Church which St. Paul wrote two letters to at Thessaloniki, for example, is still with us today. Learn more of Orthodoxy. Lean not on your tier 101 basic level 19th century american evangelical criticisms of the Church that has been with us since the 1st century. You display zeal without knowledge. Lord, have mercy.

In reference to the martyors, "We're all going to die anyways, we might as well do it with honor and dignity" Isn't this particular term suggestive of claiming one has nothing to lose? Is this thinking and teaching in sync with the Holy Spirit? My understanding is that it should be irrelevant whether we're going to die or not, and to die is to gain the crown of life. Thank you in advance for your answer, and may God richly bless your works. Such details of prayer are indeed knowable and edifying - and it is our duty to get them right! We must always drill down into the specifics of our theology. This is exactly where we must not "wing it." It is our personal responsibility to read/inquire after it so we don't accidentally worship God incorrectly. We do not please God by improvising on Church tradition! The Filioque heresy comes to mind, as does the surgical precision of Mosaic Law Liturgy and God's response to Aaron's sons for attempting to embellish it! The Apostles showed us what to do by ASKING Jesus how to pray!

@@merrill5780Amen. God bless you greatly. They Glorify and worship Mary above Jesus. She remains dead in her grave, awaiting Resurrection with the rest of her brothers and sisters. I left the Greek Orthodox false church years ago when God opened my eyes to their Blatant Blasphemy. There was even a Huge Muriel painted on the church wall of the Pyramid all seeing eye. Huge red flag to these imposters, they love Titles and awards. They deceive the young women to join the Maids of Athena. I still have my old membership card, and written on the back it states…Masonic Lodge Order of Washington DC. They are blind leading the blind. @@OrthodoxTradition You call Almighty God a liar. No where in scripture does it say this. Yes, the Born Again believers, The True Church, the Body of Christ live Forever, but when they die, they remain dead in their graves, UNTIL the Resurrection. Which begins with the Rapture. The Dead IN Christ shall rise First, THEN WE which are ALIVE and remain, shall be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air. And this ALSO includes our sister Mary. Mark 7:8
