The Side Effects of Being Human - ASMR Supportive Friend / Mental Health vlog

I call this "The Side Effects of Being Human" after compiling the list of topics provided by viewers and seeing how it looks like the side effects listed on a prescription drug label. Says a lot about our species.
I “act” as a supportive friend while rowing my boat down a winding stream of consciousness that contains my unadulterated thoughts, views, feelings, advice, knowledge and experiences on a wide variety of mental health topics primarily suggested by viewers that they themselves or someone they know are dealing with. I also swear. A lot. I get very emotional and defensive whenever I talk about how people are mistreated in this world. What can I say, I wear my heart proudly on my throat.
Please remember - if you are having suicidal thoughts, dealing with severe depression, self-harm, etc., please seek a professional, call a national or local hot-line, emergency office, etc.

Whether you are new to this little video of mine or are watching it again, I just wanted to drop in after all these years (after noticing people still commenting and watching) to say that I wish you nothing but the best as you travel down and forge your own path in life. There may not be any guarantees from one day to the next, and we all have to make the best of the hand we are dealt. Just try your best to enjoy and make the most of the good times, and to overcome and get through the bad times. Peace, ER

If ASMR therapy ever takes off and goes "mainstream," future generations will read about and watch ER as perhaps the most innovative performer of his time, and someone who laid the foundation for future generations. I really believe ER has a grand idea of what ASMR could be.

good video. I also know what it's like to go through hell in life. I lost my wife to diabetes 3 years ago a week before our birthday ( we were the same age, only a day apart). we had a 2 year old daughter whom I was left alone to raise. after her death, every night when I went to sleep I experienced sharp pains in my chest and my arms would go numb. I thought, every night, that I was going to have a heart attack. this was such a strong feeling for me that i feared night time, and became an insomniac. I couldn't sleep because I knew out would happen again, I feared out happening again, and every night for 3 years it happened, so many times I rushed to the e.r thinking I was going to die, I became nauseated and would get sick in the toilet, the e.r doctors told me there was nothing wrong with me, it was all in my head...I thought my life was over, I'd never be able to cope. I've had doctors try to put me on anti depressants, nothing worked, anti depressants made it worse but made those same feelings come through the day as well. finally I found a doctor I could talk to. I explained to her my situation, she suggested a counselor, I was never the type to see a counselor, I didn't want to see one, I always thought only people with mental disorders should see them, but I went, I saw a counselor anyway, we talked, he asked me about things in my life that stressed me out, what was causing me anxiety, why I felt like I was having a heart attack, I explained to him how I blamed myself for my wife's death. after hearing my life's story he explained to me I was perfectly fine, he told me I was having anxiety attacks. after doing research and listening to other anxiety sufferers stories, I realized that's exactly what it was. he explained to me that the reason I was having these attacks was because I want dealing with her death the way I should be. I held it in, I tried to ignore it, not because I didn't live her, not because I didn't miss her, but on the contrary, I did love her, I did miss her, I just didn't want to hurt, so I tried to push my emotions aside, he gave me some amazing tips, which I thought "yeah right, this won't work for me, this is stupid" but I went along with it and it did help. ive not had an anxiety attack now for awhile, while my wife's death still does bother me, I've realized it wasn't my fault, I did for her everything that I could possibly do. it doesn't take those feelings of hurt and lonliness away, but I've learned to deal with them. just know if your like me, don't hide your emotions, don't hold it in under the facade off being strong, hiding your feelings doesn't make you strong, dealing with them is what makes you strong, everyone goes through pain, hurt, loneliness, remember, it's not that you survived the storm, it's how you got through the storm that makes you who you are. suicide is never the answer. suicide causes more harm than good. no matter who you are there is always someone out there who cares for you. even if sometimes out doesn't seem like it. before you consider suicide, consider this, who will you be hurting by you ending your life? I know one thing, I have my daughter, she depends on me, she lost her mother, I couldn't ever take her father away from her as well, just please understand that only death is permanent.

God bless you, +Mike V. Sometimes it's hard to even get out of bed with all you've been through, and people have been crushed by less. Thank you for having the strength to keep going, to post this. Hopefully this post helps someone out there that needs to hear this- that it's ok to get help, that its ok to hurt sometimes too, and that there are ways to deal short of ending it. And yes, death is a permanent fix for a temporary problem. May the Lord turn your ashes to beauty and continue to bless you and your daughter. Good days are still to come, my friend. Hang in there.

Thank you! Some days are better than others. Even though it's been 4 years this October, it doesn't make it any better. I thank God for my daughter, she helped me get through it, she saw me cry and she would start crying even though she didn't really understand what was happening, so I told myself I want going to cry anymore, especially around her because i didn't want it to effect her anymore than what it already did. I know a lot of people who go through things like this or that, not everyone feels they have someone to help then through it, I guess I was fortunate to have my daughter. I just like to let people know that no matter what the circumstance is, there's an old saying my counselor told me to repeat to myself when I was depressed it goes; this too, shall pass! And it's the truth, most everything in life, good or bad, is temporary and depending on how you deal with it, you most often come out stronger and wiser for it. The Strifes in life are what build our character. The thing I keep telling myself I'd " don't ever give up!" Yes it's hard but the alternative is not worth it. I hope, if there is anyone going through a really hard situation right now and is reading this, contemplating suicide, reading this will change their mind. Nobody is hopeless. Everyone deserves a chance at a happy life! You'll never get that chance again if your dead.

"You need to find solace in your situation. You need to find the good in the situation." This is great advice that I think works in many different life situatons ^_^ Sometimes it's easy to let the negative things in life get you down, even when there are a lot of good things happening. This quote from you is something I'll keep in the front of my mind. I haven't made it all the way through this video yet, but thanks for being so relatable and helpful, Paul.

Caroline ASMR Hey thanks Caroline. It's not always as easy as what I've said. It's not easy to always find the good in life. Sometimes depression and negative thoughts are just too overpowering. But if someone can recognize them as just thoughts and feelings and that they really want to live, and they keep battling the war in their mind, they'll grow stronger. It's easy to sit in front of a camera and say everything will be alright, you have the power, etc., etc., but it's harder when you're that person in real life struggling in those dark moments. But believe me, I can speak from experience. I shut myself in my room and took antihistamines to sleep for 24 hours in order to escape the mental anguish. But I made it through to this day. I continue to learn and adapt and sometimes I have my bad days still. But everything I said in this video is really what I try to think of and do all the time. Some of the stuff are things I picked up from artists, philosophers, and various other people. We all have to find what works for us. Hopefully I can offer a little bit of that.Sorry for the book! ;)

Now I’m not saying there aren’t others who make videos like this, as there probably are others. But in this moment I just want to appreciate this video. This man who has devoted so much of his personal time for the benefit of others. There are many of us that have had dark thoughts circling us like sharks, but I believe videos like these are the bright light which blinds those circling thoughts, allowing us to escape the murky water to which those ideas originated from. Hi, Rift. I'm gonna get right to it. I am a lesbian. I live in the south. People here are not very accepting. I feel like I don't belong anywhere. Before this Eureka! moment came about, I was severely depressed. Then along came anxiety, and realizing I just didn't feel anything for men. This amped up my anxiety, which brought about the severity of my depression. "People are going to find out before I want them to. People are going to hurt me. It's dangerous to be LGBTQ+ in the south!" I'd think. "I'm worthless. The world would be better off without me, a lesbian. I'm a sin." And then I found this video. I am not going to lie and say it cured me, but, I guess, indirectly, it did. This video gave me the courage to talk to my dad about my depression and anxiety, and I got medicine for it. Today, I still get anxiety quite a bit, and am definitely still a little concerned about how people will treat me when they find out about my feelings for girls. The good news is that I am able to be happy and that I have completely come to terms with the fact that I like girls. I could never be more grateful for anyone. You have gotten me through fights, breakdowns, anxiety attacks, nights when sleeping pills weren't working for my insomnia, and times I just needed to relax and think. Thank you so much, ER. (P.S. I'm sorry that this is long, lol.) ((:

Yeah man. I feel your pain. I do. If you work on yourself as best you can, you might just meet another woman who gives you an immense special connection. You might not. But your best shot is to become the best version of yourself, despite your pain. I know how dibilitating the pain can be and how hard it can be. I lost the love of my life suddenly. I hurt all the time. Can hardly function. Medication, racing heart, endless suffering. But your best self is your best chance, there is no other choice. Love and peace.

Aspergers is weird in the sense you don't know what is normal... For me I long for a moment in which I can experience things without aspergers. Just as some may want to experience how it is to have aspergers. While the "symtoms" of mine has lessened over the years ( mostly the sensitivity to sound ) I still have a little bit of trouble socializing. I do attribute it to a lot of bullying in my life and a bunch of stupid decisions I had made in my childhood however I also thing that it has made me a better person through experience. I now don't get bullied and have multiple friends. I had learned how to ignore bullying and I had gotten in shape and continue to do so. I also try to get out more as the bullying and lack of friends had made me isolate myself. I had resigned myself to the family computer for years and became very unhealthy which attributed to more bullying. I have looped this back around to finding that I can easily learn multiple programming languages and have found that I want to chase a career in such a field. My advise when dealing with these things are to find the pros within your cons. You also have to stay healthy, a healthy body can make you feel 100x better. Just switching from soda to water or doing a simple 10 minute workout each night can make you feel way better about yourself. You can also make sure to get up in the morning and maybe take a shower and clean up. Start with the little things in life and work your way up. Not sure why I took the time to type this but I hope it possibly helped someone. One thing I need to work on is sleep...

I like to come back and watch these. They really help. It helps me relax at night when I'm having trouble sleeping with my insomnia and takes my mind off my dysphoria, anxiety, and depressive thoughts at night. Rift has to be my favorite ASMRist because he seems so genuine and can relax me the most. I'm used to being called slurs but they still hurt. These types of "supportive friend" videos helps me ground myself during an episode. I don't get to talk about my mental illnesses or horrible times in life often or at all, because I'm afraid of being weak and vulnerable. Even to my friends, It's hard. I still bottle it up, thinking that they don't need to worry about my emotional burdens because they seem so much more carefree, and they're dealing with their own things. Even to my s/o it's hard, just because I feel broken and disappointing. My family barely knows anything, they've never been understanding or wanting to deal with it. So I'm left with nobody, and end up spilling it to some random internet video to get lost in the comments or have a really really bad episode. I've just been keeping it all for so long that I have too many burdens and emotions to say. I'm angry, hurt, depressed, frustrated, confused, broken, and more. Everytime I try to let go I only grip harder. I don't want to remember these things, and I don't want to keep it from my loved ones. I just. Can't seem to find the right time, for them to be emotionally okay enough, for me to be brave enough, to find the right words to say, so I lie. This is really only the vague description that doesn't even include everything. So. I guess there's my semi opening up to some internet strangers, because that's so much easier.

Lit Bytes I didn't like the first Hobbit film. As much as I love Jackson, I just didn't like how some parts differentiated way too much from the books. I never saw the 2nd one and I doubt I'll see the third. I felt the same way about LOTR. The 3rd was great, but I could not stand how weak and whiney Frodo was. But I'm not trying to make fans of the films feel bad. That's just me! I think there were great parts of the films. And I'm glad that he brought the books to life as best as possible.

Their passions came from struggle and coping with difficulty. And this video demonstrate it all! "Everybody is f***ed up!" is the smartest thing I ever needed to hear. Hello! Lol I could keep commenting so much on this video. This is one of my favorite subjects, the brain/our minds. There is a bit of basic science I have learned, some general concepts and definitions. So, from what I've learned, most of our mind is the subconscious and it is such a small part which is what we would call conscious. The subconscious being things like our emotions. The conscious part having to do with our frontal lobe I think, something that is so much more in the human brain than any other animal, it is that which gives us such an ability of choice. I don't hold the beleif that there is no limit to that ability to choose and change, but there definitely is something there. I feel sometimes like I have two brains. The subconscious is very powerful, but there is something that seems to be the observer.

I've been watching your channel for a little over 2 years now, and i gotta say, you've really helped me out. I was very depressed, during 2012, and 2013 and these ASMR videos kept me from thinking too much about it. When you started making these psychology related video, i could also relate to pretty much everything you said, and i while watching this video, i started thinking and realized that i actually overcame my anxiety because of you. When i was younger, i felt anxious and hated going to birthday parties, and pretty much all social activities, like going to the store to buy something, but now that i've overcome this anxiety, i can go to these things, without a problem. I actually ended up being one of the "popular kids" in school. So as you can see, you've had a huge influence on my life and for that i thank you. I'm only 14, so i still have a long life ahead of me, and if i kept being depressed, my life would be way worse and maybe i would even have considered committing suicide.

If you can overcome depression and suicide, you are pretty much one of the strongest people in the world. It shows you have the power to overcome. So keep doing what you're doing, take 1 day at a time, because it's working and someday you may just end up being strong enough to help someone else in turn. :)

I've never found a video so moving and so therapeutic as well. ER you really are an amazing person man and your creativity nowadays is superb, I'm glad you make videos because they really mean a lot to a lot of us.

You are an inspiration to keep moving forward and never give up. I’ve been dealing with male pelvic floor dysfunction for the past year and a half and it’s been absolutely devastating to deal with mentally and physically! I’m married with 2 young kids and need to be here for them. Your videos help me calm down and relax which is actually an important part of my healing as stress and anxiety have a big role in muscle tension. Thank you very much for your supportive comforting video channel!

I just want to let you know that you’re not alone. Everyone struggles. Does that make it right? No. Does it make it easier? Maybe a little, but that’s not the point. Remember though, that there are always people there for you. It’s easy to forget them, when you get wrapped around in feelings. There are always people to talk to. I hope you’re doing ok, amidst the pandemic.

As much as I want to watch this video, and as much as I probably need to watch this video, every time I try, I have to stop due to breaking down in tears. I haven't even gotten into the first five minutes, which is probably pathetic in and of itself. The fact that you spent time and energy to think about this video, actually plan this video, and then record it for over two and a half hours makes me feel so good and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I can't tell you how much these things mean to me when they're more weighty and touching than anything anyone has been able to do in my life outside the internet. I know that you know that this matters, or you wouldn't have done it. But I feel like I couldn't just sit here and feel this way and have these thoughts without telling you how much this video means to me. So thank you.

And I wanted to add, I thank you for making this video even at the possible expense of your own mental health. I know that these things are tough for you, and to power on making a video in order to help other is frankly incredibly brave and worthy of quite a bit of praise. Again, thank you.

From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank you for this video. I’ve been struggling a lot lately with mental health. I live with both of my grandparents who are both very sick. They practically raised me and it’s hard to see people who stepped up to raise you go through tough times. It kills me everyday seeing them in the condition they’re in. This video made me feel cared for and understood, as my grandparents always have. Thank you again, Rift. I’m sure you hear this a lot, but you’ve helped me through a lot. I appreciate you and the effort you put into all of this.

This is helping me remember that my grief over losing a family member is only temporary. The tough part will pass and become easier over time. It's been a month now and it still feels like just yesterday he was next to me. I still somewhat can't believe he died, but I can't deny it. Life is tough right now and this is helping me, so thank you. I should probably put my laundry in and other stuff I have been delaying. I should probably go to sleep too. Last time I looked at the clock it was 10:30pm, and now it's 11:30. Goodnight. Thank you for the wonderful video.

I clicked because the phrase reminded me of the Old English poem Deor. There is a recurring line: ‘þæs oferēode, þisses swā mæġ’ It translates roughly to ‘that was overcome, and so may this’. The poem tells of the woes of many Germanic folk/historical figures, then Deor’s own troubles, followed by this line. We’ve always needed to reassure ourselves that our troubles will pass, and they always do. Hang in there lads and lasses, your loved ones will help you and all will be well.

we love you. I watch this video every night. Whenever I’m sad, or guilty, I watch this beloved video. Seeing your kind face, and the fire, and you saying the words, “this too shall pass”. On the board makes me know that it’s true, like the top comment says, you’re a special person. You truly are. Keep it up man
