The Siddis (African Indian) community in Talala , Gujarat 🇮🇳

#india #siddis #Siddiscommunity #Jambur #geenyadamadow
I took a long journey in order to see the Afro Indian community in Gujarat. The journey was long but it was worth it. I was able to explore Talala and then head Jambur. Jambur is a village in Junagadh district of Gujarat, India. It is located near Gir Forest National Park, 68 kilometres south of the district headquarters at Junagadh and 377 kilometres from the state capital of Gandhinagar. Jambur is known for being home for centuries to some members of the African-origin Siddi tribe.
In this video, our first stop is Talala, where we met the African community that stays there. I was welcomed with kindness and love. They answered all my questions and they were kind enough to let me roam around their community to have better understanding how it looked.
I hope you guys enjoy this clip. It took time and effort to reach there and this journey was worth it because I was able to see The siddhi community with my own eyes rather than hear it from someone else.

    They are not poor compared to other communities in the same region. That whole region of south gujarat looks like this. No metro cities in that region. All semi urban and rural areas. That's why it looks less developed.

    The previous Indian government has given many facilities in sports, education, jobs etc to the Siddis, like they have given to other Indian tribes. Siddis were given Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for this. Their culture was shown in other places like Delhi. So those who think that these African tribes are being discriminated in India, its not really true. This is from Gujarat India.Gujarat has problems of discrimination in the name of religion etc even for other Indians. African tribes are there in other places too like Karnataka, Andaman Islands etc and they live good lives. Recently videos were made by travellers like Marwa etc.

    This is an excellent video that brings awareness to afro-Indian community issues even though it is a very brief vlog. Obviously, kids showed a lots of respect for Geenyada Madow and her fellow visitors. I heard African communities speak Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Konkani or Kannada languages and not Tamil and I am not sure why that being the case. I am not sure if they even know few words of any bantu languages. Just hope they keep the African culture and traditions alive.

  • @ajaymuj

    @ajaymuj

    There has been total assimilation of those communities in the society. They live, think, act like indians. They have no clue on bantu languages as their mother tongue is respective indian languages and they have no clue on african culture. They are not there in tamilnadu so they dont speak tamil. They are majorly in Karnataka with atleast 8 villages of their own that I have heard 3 near haliyal where marwa visited and 5 near yellapur, yellapur siddhis are mostly hindus and haliyal siddhis are mostly christians, yellapur siddhis speak kannada and konkani, haliyal siddhis speak kannada, konkani and marathi. Karnataka siddhis are well off, they are getting educated, they have farms and have gone on to become member of parliament as well. A small siddhi community in gujarat who are mostly muslims speak gujarati and broken urdu. Gujarati siddhi community stay in their own muslim communities, less educated and are more poor like many other indian communities and do menial jobs but some among them too have small farms. Nevertheless, they are indians and not Africans. Apart from their looks, they have nothing to offer you as africans.

  • @rcana5803

    @@ajaymuj thank you for letting us know why they don't speak Tamil. Siddhis have been in India since 14 or 15 th century and they have not any contacts with African mainland for hundreds of years. it is true they have been assimilated and they are Indians just like any Indians. In fact, siddhis look like some South Indians anyways. It is also true Siddhis in South India are doing a lot better than what we saw in Gujarat, and they are also living in a pollution free rural area in South India and that is very unique. I think Siddhis in some states in south India are accorded a special status. Just want to say, Culture is part of the soul. African cultural revival is beneficial for Siddhis.

  • @ajaymuj

    @ajaymuj

    Жыл бұрын

    @@rcana5803 siddhis in both states have been accorded special status and are given lot of facilities by govt. Ultimately getting educated is upto individuals and families. Looking for missionary help, getting benefitted by missionaries and becoming lazy is not good. No one can help in such cases. African culture revival happens by taking them over to africa on their wish, any such revivalist attempts by showing the skin colour in india invoke separatist sentiments and we don't want that to happen. I don't agree that culture is related to the soul. It is related to env in which one is grown up. It's better you guys wish them best being Indians and leave them for what they are. We have done same with caribbean indian origin people.

  • @rcana5803

    @rcana5803

    @@ajaymuj : cultural revival is happening among many communities and that is why minorities rights are protected by Indian government status. Further, article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights protects The right to take part or participate in cultural life. Besides from some misconceptions about the cultural revival, I am glad you support the special protected status for minorities.

  • @ajaymuj

    @ajaymuj

    Жыл бұрын

    @@rcana5803 Sorry for your misconception of my comment. By culture revival means, Indians in africa pretty much have retained their native culture and such a minority does not get enough support in other majority countries. So it becomes India's responsibility for retaining and reviving their culture if it's dying. Another example, there are 3 million hindus and sikhs in pakistan but pakistan being a islamic nation hindus and sikhs there do not get any support. So it's india's responsibility to try, support and retain their religion, culture and traditions. However, that is not the case with siddhis in India. They are as much indians as all of us are. Like I said apart from their skin colour or racial looks or whatever you call it they have nothing to offer you as "african". Hope you get my point now. That's why I had given you the example of indian origin caribbeans earlier.. And yes I support minority rights of communities. However muslims in India are 17% or 230 million people. So they should be taken out of minority status. Gujarati siddhis even though are muslims have right to be protected as part of siddhi community.

    Yep Indian people are too much accomodating. It's a Dharmik religion majority country but you'll find Christians, Muslims and Jews living in it. Speak a lot about the coexistence and accomodating nature.
