The Short Life and Death of Nintendo Labo | Boring Brandon

Ойындар

What happens when Nintendo tries to make video games out of cardboard? Brandon takes a look back at Nintendo’s most ambitious project and accessory ever, cardboard!..err…we mean, Nintendo Labo! It was an accessory released in 2018 as a new way to play games on the Nintendo Switch. With it’s own D.I.Y. set up, Labo set out to be a fun little side project but it kinda flopped. It had a short life-span and wasn’t around for very long. Brandon assesses the release of Labo and performs an autopsy, because it's dead.

I've heard a lot of people say Nintendo should get into VR, an I keep thinking "But they did... twice now." Nice to see someone else remembers Labo; certainly an interesting idea and I approve of the creative attempt. 2:30 - Man, I'd have loved it if Miiverse came back. I still get fondly nostalgic thinking about it. 4:24 - Admittedly, the cardboard sets themselves seemed an appealing aspect on it's own through the stuff you could construct and then personalise. Thinking about it, my niece does love her crafts and my nephew does love his gaming... this might be a worthwhile joint present to consider still to this day. 6:45 - It was also pretty cool to see the evolution of the Wii U's Project Giant Robot come to fruition. 11:27 - I don't care much for VR so I didn't pay much attention to any of it's announcements, but I can certainly see the appeal of using VR for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Given an aspect of Captain Toad is it's shifting of camera angles to view the different parts of the stage, it seems a more natural fit. Cool to hear they included unique levels as well designed for it. 17:15 - Nice to see and surprised to see Nintendo Switch Sports get a mention. I could certainly do with a Labo Golf Club; there's no way I'm getting both my hands wrapped around the tiny Switch Joy-Con and keep it lowered for a proper swing. It was nice to see the leg-strap get further utilisation though (shame the ring-fit accessory hasn't had an additional game to utilise it). Fantastic video by the way!

i bought the first kit when it came out, i really enjoy crafting so i enjoyed building the things but you can only build them once so y'know. the games were fun but didn't have much to them after 1 or maybe 2 sessions with each thing. one big problem with it is storage. they arent made to be flattened or taken apart and theyre a bit bulky and being made out of cardboard you had to be careful with the things. labo was dead by the time the pandemic hit but i wonder if it would have found a little more success if they released a few years later

Interesting to bring up storage as a problem for them. I've seen people sell them locally claiming that they don't have the space for it. But you may be right, Labo might have had a better chance in the later years of the Switch

yeah i had to get rid of mine because of storage. the first kit took up like an entire storage tub, it was a fun series of mini games but not enough to keep a tub of cardboard around my place, ive only got so much room!

In my opinion Nintendo Labo failed for 3 reasons: 1)It's misunderstood (this happened to the Wii-U too, that people tought it was only an extension of the Wii and not a separate Console) in the case of Labo, people tought that with that they where buying only some Cardboards at $70 when in truth they where buying the Nintendo Labo Program/Game/Project (whatever you call it) + some cardboards, and that if it got it ruined then they would have to buy a New One 2)Nintendo Labo has too many Kits, and when you buy one then you get only the program for that specific kit so if you want the Entire Labo then you have to buy ALL Kits 3)One Kit is too expensive, it has the price of a Full Game but it isn't, so it isn't worth that price. What Nintendo should have done was: 1]Keep Labo Digital, I hate the Digitalization of Games but in this case i think Labo would have benefited from it (as for the Cardboard then Nintendo could have given a Free Manual to how someone could Homebrew it [Edit: You mentioned that in your opinion they should sell them pre-build? maybe that could be done too, but they are Big so i don't see how it would be more convenient]) maybe they could have done a Single Physical Starter Pack, but all other kits should still have to be downloaded digitally 2]Nintendo Labo would be only one, you buy it and you would get all the Kits, but if they want they can add some Extra DLC that can be buyed separately (nothing to expensive that would reach the price of a Full Kit) 3]Trying to keep the complessive price low, maybe if Nintendo Combined ALL Kits + some extra ones then They could have reached the full price of one game Ps: I am very surprised there are no video about Nintendo Labo being Run & Modded/Hacked/Homebrewed on some Hacked Switch or Emulator

You get such high praise from me for starting the video with the orchestra piece used in the demo for the GameCube and Wii versions of Twilight Princess! I love that song, and it does a great job of building anticipation for the disappointment of Labo! Also, Labo came out on my birthday, so does that make me a bunch of cardboard as well? On a random note, how did you like the latest Nintendo Direct?

Nice catch pointing out the twilight princess music! I didn't think anyone would recognize it. I think the direct was a solid B+. I literally screamed seeing Baten Kaitos getting remastered and the shadow drop for Metroid Prime was really cool. I've been playing the Gameboy games for the past 5 days so all in all, a really good direct!

Well, not only was that song used for the demo in Twilight Princess, but it was also used during the E3 2005 showcase, back when the Twilight Realm was still in black-and-white. I even got a special DVD for that early build; kinda hope I can still find it somewhere. Glad you enjoyed the Direct! I also very much enjoyed it, especially seeing Ghost Trick get ported and a new Layton game! As for the Game Boy games, I'm glad more folks get to experience the original Fire Emblem, and hopefully Sacred Stones later down the line! Now we just need easy-to-access versions of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn...

Well said, I don't think the concept is bad but how it was done is not very good. A lot of people love building stuff it's so fun and enjoyable especially since the switch is for kids and kids love building stuff and there's literally build-able figures in special editions of games so the concepts isn't awful in fact it's very good but it didn't give at all... And $70 is a joke

I mean it came with Software. Fair jokes (and moments that got annoying just get to the point who cares who it's for and what people think of creatives with more bravery to do whatever) and it's a fine thing to exist. It's a fine experiment they didn't have to support it for long if they had limited ideas. It didn't die they moved on to the next project that's normal. Lego fans build some cool stuff. Same as game builder garage and Dreams (RIP Project Spark) and others with level making. It's basically a science kit and with software as well. Instead of plastic or metal it's cardboard what is wrong with that a company cannot experiment ok by that logic then. All for Nintendo pushing their creative muscles what a great response. Adults limiting their fun/imagination is just hilarious embarrassment or whatever is in their minds. Towards this concept besides the hardware side have you seen Lego. I'm a nerd but I built paper monopoly for fun or PowerPoint fake games for fun so I see potential in it and it's not even something I want to use because of space and I'm not interested but I don't hate the idea I have an imagine unlike most adults. I mean come on. I have an imagination for game ideas, character ideas and so on. If people want to collect toys, action figures, kids/family audience games (Nintendo titles are for many audiences) and more by all means. VR Kit is Google Cardboard again but it's age for children then Virtual Boy was.
