I wish they did more with Murdoch, I love his design. He could've been interesting to pair with Henry, have a story focused on the 2 gentle giants.

Murdoch is definitely one of my favorite characters and the this video into his history does him Justice and I'm now regretting that I don't have a Wooden Railway model of him but I will get hymn one day. Also who else is here watching this video around 5 in the morning.

Murdoch’s an asset to Sodor’s Railway Mainline. He pulls trains that are bigger and heavier to carry.

That’s cool did you know he’s also based off the British rail steam locomotive the 4-10-0 standard 9F made before 1958 brought to sodor by ship and he was first seen in season 7 and last seen in season 12 so that’s all I got for today any other facts to share

@@zmpjacksoncomics2077 Correction, the BR Standard 9F was a 2-10-0, not a 4-10-0. Also, no, Ethan did not switch it up. Steam did officially end in 1968, although continued under BR in the Vale of Rheidol Railway. I can find no evidence that your note about 1958 is accurate, as steam engines would continue to be built after that date, including a number of 9Fs. I also cannot find any evidence to say Murdoch specifically was built before 1958.

one thing you left out: his model was repainted and originally going to be used as Hiro's model in Hero of the Rails, because HOTR was going to be in model format, not CGI.

This is only fan speculation and is incorrect. The model version of HOTR was scrapped very early on in development, and the faces were only ever made for reference to base the CGI models on. They were never intended to be used on the screen.

I think Murdoch is one of those characters that would've worked so well in the Railway Series. I'm honestly surprised Awdry didn't introduce any BR Standards in his books (not including Barry).

I had a Murdoch Wooden Railway toy as a kid. Had no clue where he was from since I never watched any episode he was in (my exposure to season 7 was light since I exclusively watched off the DVDs and VHS tapes we owned/rented, and ours didn't contain many S7 episodes) but I never complained. He was another engine to play with.

I wish murdoch was remembered in the chi series along with arthur (if he wasnt present there) the great race would of been significantly with murdoch doing the event henry participated, i imagine murdoch would of gotten either close to top 3 or in top 3

I think Murdoch participating in the strongest engine competition would be overkill because he can pull long heavy freight trains but hey that's my opinion

Nice to see you do Murdoch's model history. Shame that most of these TV series only characters would only get little appearences. It's a good thing that us Thomas and Friends make stories and such to give more character development and time to these characters.

It's an unfortunate consequence of these characters being made for marketing toys instead of telling stories. Back in the RWS any new character would feature, at least, for an entire book (which is 4-5 stories) and usually get minor parts in later books (the only notable exceptions being the Culdee Fell and Arlesdale Engines). The TVS around this time period was too busy pumping out new characters to release toys of, and as such made no effort to keep them around longer than needed to tell good stories.

@@MrJoeyWheeler I mean Oliver was pretty much forgotten after his book only appearing in around two other stories, the TVS did much better with him than in the RWS.

He’s still the biggest engine I’ve ever seen!

The models at Nitrogen were shipped to away when Mattel bought the show, some were shipped to Hara for exhibition, the rest to a storage facility somewhere in the UK where alot of the models owned by Mattel reside.

I really like Murdoch. I love the 2-10-0 configuration as it is a favorite of mine. I do wish they did more with him but at the same time, I don't think I quite enjoy his Peace and Quiet personality that much.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who isn't a fan of his "Peace and Quiet" personality.

The concept art of Murdoch shows him with a single chimney, not double. 9Fs just had massive exhausts. He’s also incorrectly drawn with flanges on the centre drivers, which 9Fs did not have due to their massive wheel base

It would have been nice to see Murdoch in the CGI series. Lots of the Season 5-12 one off characters have so much potential for more stories.

It has been a long time since I watch the Thomas Model Series, and I always thought that Murdoch's model being bigger than most of the engine. However, in the model series, he is just slightly taller than salty :D

I have a theory about Murdoch: I think he likes peace and quiet not just because he can get overwhelmed, but because he can only take one voice at a time. His smoke deflectors block his view sideways, so he has to listen carefully to see who he’s talking to. Listening to multiple voices at once confuses him.

Am I being gaslit, Murdoch was S7 and Salty was S6 along with Harvey.

true I LOVE LADY, my dream episode in cgi is where lady comes back and the engines thinks she magic, she later denies this and the engines apologize for talking about her, teaching kids that you shouldnt believe everything you hear, and we can finally rule thomas and the magic railroad out of the storyline

I've always liked Murdoch in an ambivalent sort of way. He's never been my favorite, but I've always thought "Oh, it's Murdoch. Neat." to him. Now that I've been reminded of him, I feel his extreme lack of potential. He should've been used more. A lot more.

Such a Small History for a Large Engine

I do wish they brought back Murdoch or kept him in the show. He had a lot of potential, but he was dropped too soon.

Murdoch is one of those unfortunate characters in my book, in that I feel like there was plenty that could have been done with his character had he existed in the RWS days, rather than coming in during the start of the series rot and not being particularly major from then on. I'm not a fan of his livery either - he'd do better to be green lor black like his prototypes. But of course, marketing is more important to the company. The maroon livery would actually have been a great choice - his silhouette is distinct from Arthur so no confusion can occur with the audience, and like James, both he and Arthur are mixed traffic engines. Just imagine the potential of Murdoch had he been an Awdry character, or else if the TVS had been designed more like the RWS; a powerful and proud engine, haunted by the thought that he is the *last* of British Steam.

I share your sentiments; he deserved better. Indeed, Murdoch being a 9F of all things carries much significance in and of itself. Given the resistance to dieselisation that plays itself up in the franchise, Murdoch's own conflict would be interesting. Would he acquiesce to his fate and beg to be a preservation piece? Would he try to prove himself in front of his diesel counterparts and to what end? Would he find himself accustomed to hauling railtours and tourists, as opposed to his original day job? Given how the franchise in its latest days treated pulling passenger trains like an honour compared to yard switching or even freight work, what does this mean for Murdoch? Does he see that as a necessary resignation? There's so much that can be done, but I don't think rail enthusiasts actually run this show anymore...

Murdoch is my favourite non-Awdry character in the show and my second favourite character in total only slightly second to Gordon. He has a really cool basic and his paint on him looks absolutely sick in my opinion and also one of the most underused characters in the show with lots of story potential with him for many reasons, his unique livery, basis, strength and the fact that he's a gentle giant like Henry buy without his rudeness and sometimes snobby personality. Very underused I say.
