@@Venmanayan I am a graphic designer who has to please my clients to get paid. If I presented that dated style,. my clients would ask me if I went back to the 1980s, had the headlines printed on the linotype machine and then waxed into the layout before taking a photographic stat of it. It is dated is all I was saying which is part of the charm of it. My comment was not meant to be taken so seriously.. Design trends come and go, but good basic typographic design has not changed that much. The kerning sucks, the indents are reminiscent of the time when people used typewriters. I give is an A for nostalgia, but an C- for actual typographic sensitivity. If you really want to delve into typographic design, most of the dial fonts were hand drawn for the dials at 2000% size and reduced to final actual size. The letters would have strange wedges cut where two angles met. This was to allow the pad-printed into to expand and make a perfect angle at dial size. Anyway it is always fun to look at old advertising. Enjoy!

Very educational. Love the story. BUT...... we are continually told that Rolex has issues with colour. Back in 1971, and now with the Pepsi. Patek's regularly have dials that have deteriorated really badly. Why are the brands that struggle most with quality, the ones that everyone loses their minds over, when buying pre owned. It's counter intuitive.

@@user-to9lk8ix6h I was asking the question, but not expecting an answer. I go to lots of watch auctions, and PPs are the worst for deteriorating. And Rolexes until very recently were made really badly. They have gone for shoddy military provider, to a jewellery brand, in one small leap. It's quite a change. But their huge problem now is their very limited range of looks.

Christian, you’re great alone, but your videos will never ever capture the charming and compelling chemistry of the ones you and Michael Kristy did. It’s a chief reason why I and so many others tuned in. You are brash, animated and insanely knowledgeable. Michael is sweet and curious, also very knowledgeable, and the way you two interacted just cannot be manufactured. They say “anyone can be replaced, but the replacement may not be as good”, feel me? Unless there was some big, dramatic, irrevocable fallout, we would all strongly urge you to reconsider. It’s the thing, the special sauce, that made online T&H so great. The explorer’s fabricated origins has really turned me off from what would otherwise be one of my favourite Rolex models. IMO the OP has a more legitimate claim to this history than what is effectively just a commemorative dial that has no resemblance to the actual watch that went to the summit. The exp2 on the other hand is the real deal - worn by modern day explorers like Ed Viesturs and Alain Hubert. Say NO to stolen valour 😂

And its latest iteration, the 124270, really wears incredibly well, regardless of the crafted story. From a design language perspective , the simplicity and “boring” format is what makes it timeless and adaptable to almost any situation, at least from the 1016 onwards. I’m also a fan of the 226570-wears also amazing. Perfect pair!!

Isn’t there some talk also that the Rolex remained at base camp while the two men went to the summit? 🤷 I think Rolex is a hybrid luxury/fashion watch because so many buyers are non watch people who buy it solely for the name, not unlike a Michael Kors or Armani watch.

And for everyone who thinks marketing is a bad thing... It is actually an extremely important part of a brand. There is a reason when you ask an average Joe to name the best luxury watch brand, he’d say Rolex. Maybe watch nerds would say Patek or AP. But no one will say an Omega, Cartier, JLC, Breguet, etc. There is a reason Nike is a better brand than Adidas, even if the latter may make better shoes. Rolex does such an amazing job at marketing that the brand is light years ahead of any other luxury watch brand including competitors like Omega and Cartier. At the rate other brands are going, they will never compete with Rolex.
