The Shocking Origins Of The Spanish Inquisition | Secret Files Of The Inquisition | Chronicle

Spain, 1468: In a land where Christians, Muslims, and Jews have lived in tolerance for centuries, a young Spanish king and queen, Ferdinand II Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, proclaim themselves the Catholic monarchs and start an inquisition, now known as the Spanish Inquisition. This is the shocking story of the religious upheaval that lasted 56 years.
Based on previously unreleased secret documents from European Archives including the Vatican, Secret Files of the Inquisition unveils the incredible true story of the Catholic Church's 500-year struggle to remain the world's only true Christian religion. It traces Catholicism's determination to maintain power at any cost in medieval France, 15th century Spain, Renaissance Italy and even into the 19th century. Historians, experts and Church authorities advise on the handling of this controversial subject matter.

people do evil for every kind of conviction. generally speaking its for economic gain, or hierarchal gain. to steal land, property, etc. even the inquisition started bc of economic status jealousy. the jewish converts were gaining in positions of societal and economic power, and the larger population wanted their jobs and wealth. And ended with expulsion and the seizure of all Jewish wealth and property. religion was just an excuse. most large world conflicts and massive injustices have to do with economics and power. But those on the top of the food chain would rather us focus on differences in race, religion, identity, etc.

Its horribly sad, I have seen cinfa's inquisition docs which are located in aragon's archives from zaragoza. Her husband Jaco Zunti as it is written in the documents of course died. I do believe Cinfa died also later on. Her trial took place around 1482 which was 10 years prior to the edict of expulsion which I wish the documentary had shed light on. Many of those that died also died in the years prior to the alhambra decree.

I think it could well be editing, but some of the experts sound kind of sympathetic to the inquisitors. For example, saying they weren’t going after Jews since these were conversos is kind of outrageous, but he could have been talking about why saying you were Jewish was a defense. But there were other little odd things that made me hope we were missing a little more context. It has to be hard to edit something like this. I feel less charitable about the priest saying it is a “mistake to torture” people. I get we try to be dispassionate looking at history to some degree. But we also have to attempt to face and learn from the harm of innocent people. More significantly, when you are part of an institution that was responsible for such atrocities, however long ago, I think it behooves you to condemn the abuse or at the very least not be seem to defend it.

A person forfeited all lands and wealth if they were found guilty...and the informer got a percentage of that. It's possible they forfeited as soon as they were informed upon, but I'm not sure. It wouldn't surprise me. ETA reminds me of PRC in Mao-s rule. Neighbour informed upon neighbour, but there were no material rewards-just the hope they'd not get informed upon themselves. I'd guess that was a big factor for the informers in these times too.

Spain was natively a Christian culture until Mohammed's followers forced Islam on the area much as had been done to Mideastern cultures prior Islam spread through violence whereas in many cases Christianity had spread voluntarily, But the bottom line is that there never was a horrific Spanish Inquistian but instead was a level headed approach to handle the many Jews and such pretending to be Catholics and undermining the church from within. Ferdinand and Isabella had many Jewish advisors that they trusted and carried on a fair purge of culture to reflect the change occurring in Spain that had finally overthrown the unwanted Islamic rule that had dominated for centuries before

Have to love ignorance.....am sure its what makes the world wobble. As already stated by another commentator what we know as Spain today is peopled by invading Celts, Romans, Visigoths and Moors, with the non Moorish Ruling class being mostly from Visigoth heritage. If you want indigenous then you probably have to look at the Basque people as they have lived in Iberia the longest. Also if you look at the history of Moorish Spain, though not a paradise by any means, for a greater extent the three major religions co-existed for the most part. The 3 main religions had their own places of worship, churches and synagogues, and little enforced conversion to Islam. This is not to say that the rulers made sure that they would be stopped from rising above their station.......which went for many of the Muslim in Spain as well......power is power after all. But compared to the treatment of the Jews post 1492 and then the barbaric treatment and expulsion of the Muslims from Spain by the Christians, I can suggest the greatest levels of attrocities and bloodshed is firmly on the hands of the Christians and not the Muslims. If you look at Muslim treatment of people of other beliefs in Jeruslem, Cairo, Istanbul, Damascus etc, and look at the treatment of Jews and Muslims by the Christian church, you will see which religion should be reviled the most. Sorry but read the accounts of the 1st and 2nd Crusades and who were the instigators of the attrocities and horrors in the start.......Christians who believe in a man of peace and love as their savior, seem to have a huge amount of blood on their hands versus the muslims or hebrews

Shalom, Salam, Peace. Do Not Lie Against God And Your Soul, The Moors Intermarried And Respected Judaism, Christian And Islam, All Lived In Harmony. The Christian West, Planned To Ruin This, By The Spanish Inquisition. Which Saw The True Face Of Fanatical Catholicism, Jews And Muslims Were Forced To Covert, Tortured Then Exiled. Even The Spanish Language Has Many Arab Words.

More have died under the yoke of religious fanaticism then all desease and wars combined. Which truly is sad considering the Jewish, Christian, Orthodox and Muslim faiths all center around the same God and Yet are all wrong the only path is through right action, a kind heart, generosity and doing no harm. Worship who you like but leave those to their own as none are without sin and therfore none have the right to judge any other.

Neither Spanish Christians nor Spanish Muslims ever treated Spanish Jews particularly well. Jews fled Christian principalies and Muslim principalities. They fled Castile, Protugal, etc. Spanish Visigoths also persecuted Jews. Jews were persecuted in Spanish colonies in America: 1) like Viceroyalty of New Spain, which would become the place I was born in, Mexico, where the press throw anti-Semitic slurs at Mexicio City's mayor (a secular Jew) and 2) the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata, later Argentina, where the single largest terrorist attack against Jews in the history of Latin America, to which the Argentine press reacted by saying that _murieron judíos e inocentes._ Needless to say, Spain and the countries that have come from it, whetever the religion (or lack thereof), whatever the politics, has never been welcoming to Jews: *we nobody in the entire Spanish speaking world have nothing to be proud of with respect to anti-semitism.*

And Brittain committed atrocities on Jews during the medieval period, and 6-million Jews were recently murdered by the northern European country of Germany. I'd say the northern Europeans get the cash prize for cruelty to jews. So your point is?

@@mariavaz1831 "The resurgence of anti-semitism in Europe is not-or should not be-a surprise. *One of the least surprising phenomena in the history of civilization, in fact, is the persistence of anti-Semitism in Europe, which has been the wellspring of Judeophobia for 1,000 years.* The Church itself functioned as the centrifuge of anti-Semitism from the time it rebelled against its mother religion until the middle of the 20th century. As Jonathan Sacks, the former chief rabbi of Great Britain, has observed, *Europe has added to the global lexicon of bigotry such terms as Inquisition, blood libel, auto‑da‑fé, ghetto, pogrom, and Holocaust.* Europe has blamed the Jews for an encyclopedia of sins. *The Church blamed the Jews for killing Jesus; Voltaire blamed the Jews for inventing Christianity. In the febrile minds of anti-Semites, Jews were usurers and well-poisoners and spreaders of disease. Jews were the creators of both communism and capitalism; they were clannish but also cosmopolitan; cowardly and warmongering; self-righteous moralists and defilers of culture.* Ideologues and demagogues of many permutations have understood the Jews to be a singularly malevolent force standing between the world and its perfection." Shalom, Salam, Peace. Nay The Moors [Muslims] Always Treated Christians And Jews Equally, Only Zionists Would Alter History, To Their Perception. Don't Forget The Muslim Countries Took In The Jewish Refugees, Especially When Europe Kept On Killing And Banning Them, Calling Them ''Christ Killers''. The Quran [Last Testament] Does Not Blame The Jews, Rather It States Christ Son Of Mary [Devout Messiah], Was Lifted Back To Heaven, At The Last Supper, To Return In The Latter Days. Instead Someone Else Was Made To Look Like Christ [Probably Judas], Was Crucified In His Place. Quran [Last Testament] Marry A Pious Jews Or Christian. Unfortunately After The Spanish Inquisition, Many Of The Abrahamic Family Kept To Themselves, In Fear Of Repeating History.
