This is completely untrue, The Shining was filmed entirely in the studio at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England. Kubrick lived in England by the way and never left. Only the helicopter shots were filmed with a second unit. It was a massive set with built in lights. That is how he was able to shoot in continuity over a few years.

I saw your post on Twitter. Thanks. Shooting took about a year, plus another year for editing. You may have seen Gordon Stainforth's comments on Twitter. He was the assistant editor on the film. His word to describe this video was "bollocks," though he was being polite about it. Kubrick dispatched many photographers to get shots of hotel interiors, including lobbies, rooms and the like, but then Roy Walker took those photos and designed a hotel and Gold Room that satisfied Kubrick's needs. Nothing, other than the second unit exteriors, was shot outside of the UK.

WRONG! Outside EXTERIOR shots were of an ACTUAL HOTEL in Mt. Hood, Oregon (with exception to the maze). The REST OF IT, was filmed on a soundstage.
Joe Turkel, the actor who played Lloyd the bartender passed away on June 27th. Best damned bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine. Or Portland, Oregon for that matter.
I don't believe they shot anything away from Elstree Studios in England. Mainly because Kubrick never left England. He sent a second unit to get the shots of the opening titles in Montana and exterior shots of the Timberline Lodge in Oregon. After meeting Joe Turkel (Lloyd the bartender) at an autograph show called the Hollywood Show, I ran into him taking a morning walk on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica! And he invited me to lunch the next day at his favorite deli. Such a great time talking about Kubrick (he'd been in three of his films) and others (The Sand Pebbles). I got to see Buck Privates, the Abbott & Costello comedy, in that theater as part of the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival a few years back. Awesome sound and picture.

It's entirely plausible that the Gold Room bar in the film was modeled after the one at this Los Angeles location, but it is implausible - and a little silly, in fact - to suggest that the two scenes between Nicholson and Joe Turkel, and the scenes with Nicholson, Turkel, and Phillip Stone were filmed wholly or in part outside of the Elstree Studios in England. Documentary proof including footage and photos from the set confirm this. Just because you read undocumented speculation on IMDB does not make it true. There were some exterior pick-up shots and other addl photography used in the film but not for the Gold Room scenes. This is very very silly.

I live an hour away from the Stanley hotel where Steven king got inspiration for the shining, This shining Steven king didn't like how it came out so he did the TV mini series in Colorado at the Stanley hotel
All shot at Ellstree studios in north London. In fact you can now park your car in the spot where they shot this, as half the studio was turned into a supermarket and car park. That carpark is also the square footage of the 3 Indiana Jones films interiors, and some exterior set pieces, and almost all interior star wars moments (original trilogy)

I lived in Hollywood many years not knowing about this! Beautiful interiors! Love old Hollywood so much. The outside looks familiar though. I am so jealous of you 2! I want to see that before I die for sure! It is pretty amazing how much Stanley was able to film something set in the US, with such grand beautiful sets, and yet he never had to step out of his neighborhood in England. I heard he could actually walk to work everyday! The cast members had to do all the traveling!
My favorite scene of the movie. Awesome, the interaction between Jack and Lloyd, the bartender ghost.!!!

Enough people have been posting responses to sufficiently debunk your "findings" in this video, so I won't say much more than I haven't already said in response to those good folks. The only thing I know about any performances in this place was sometime in the 1980s. A group of people put on a play in the armory. It was called "Tamara," and the authors were inspired by Bertolucci's "1900" to write the play and set it in the hall, since it had a "built in" setting that was perfect for their needs. However, I would have thought "The Conformist" would have been a better choice, given its Art Deco art direction. The play was one of those where the characters went from room to room and back. That meant the audience followed them around. I did not see the play, but I had read about its performance elsewhere, including The L.A. Weekly, which seemed to think this play was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It was apparently a hit with the gay community, though I cannot remember how long it ran. The "logo" was a Hirschfield-like drawing of a woman's face, wearing a 1930s style hat, a fur collar, a cigarette in a cigarette holder in her hand, maintaining a "mysterious" appearance. It was on display in front of the hall for a long time. I saw the sign a lot when driving past the place. There is no logic to having Kubrick, Nicholson, Turkell, et al., to fly to L.A., only to grab just two shots. The expense would have been more than the cost to simply redress the existing set at Elstree Studios, if that were even necessary. Kubrick had a video tap attached to his camera. If he had seen a problem in the playback, or when viewing the footage the next day, he would have re-shot everything right there on Stage 5. Where did you get this information? Or, to put it another way, do you know who started this rumor? There have been numerous rumors about Kubrick made over the years, and some have become urban legends. You are, so far, the only person I know of who audaciously made a video about such a rumor and is now passing it off as fact. The comments from people below who believe this is astonishing, and not in a good way.

BUT this place may have inspired the design of the sets by the set designers, similar to the way the inside of the Overlook was based on the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. I remember watching the very scary theatrical trailer in an actual movie theater, mind you, (I had already read the book) the one that shows the elevator doors opening, and my best friend and I both thought "wow! It looks like the Ahwahnee Hotel" which we had just both visited on a youthful drive to Yosemite as teenagers. I was delighted to find out, decades later, that Kubrick's ideas were based on places we already liked and had seen. If you ever get a chance, visit the Ahwahnee in Yosemite National Park. BUT stay at Curry Village, it's much much more fun. AND much cheaper, although after Biden and Gavin Newsom, the prices have probably ascended to over $150/night for a tent, two beds, a dresser, no door locks, and squirrels and bears hanging around....
Those rooms, the theatre, bar and alternate bar area are awesome.
The Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite is the inspiration for the interior of the shining hotel . Looks exactly the same til this day. Definitely should check it out.

Spooky Spooky 🕸☠️🎃
No offense intended, but with all that's been documented over the decades since the film's release, there's no mention by anyone of Kubrick assembling a film crew and flying off with them and Jack Nicholson to Los Angeles. Kubrick left the security of his home and family in England, the huge set he had meticulously built, flies across the world to California - and not a single person noticed or or has ever mentioned it? Sure thing. You bet. It's goofy internet myth/speculation unsupported by any documentation - therefore, it *must* be true! 🧐

well it would of been a second crew as Kubrick didn't ever return to the US after he left after 2001 space oyssey in 1968 which makes this questionable because I dont think he would of allowed second crew to film actors without him being there, things like the helicopter shots in Colorado and overheads of the Timberline Lodge are all second crew stuff but not neccesarily having the actors in them. Wow that looks amazing. Love the film, even though it changed some aspects from the book. I went to the original haunted hotel that inspired King, The Stanley Hotel in Estes park Colorado. I went with my high school theater arts class for a national event. 3 friends and I were put in the same room King was in. We had many strange experiences that we still can not understand or figure out. Hearing kids running in the halls when there were no kids were there, shadows moving around with no body to make them, hearing voices where no one else was, even a table raising and slamming down when no one was sitting at it. It was also winter and we were the only guests there, 15 people in all. I highly suggest y'all go there and see what happens.
