THE SHIKOKU INU - JAPANESE WOLF DOG? 四国犬

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The Japanese Wolf was irradiated and most believe is extinct, but perhaps it's left a legacy with one of the most primitive Japanese dog breeds who developed on the island where the wolf remained the longest before being annihilated. Many believe the Shikoku is the most primitive all of the Japanese breeds and has wolf like characteristics through his extremely primitive DNA. Did he descend from the Japanese wolf and how long ago was that? Does this make him a wolfdog? Find out today...

The Shikoku is Japan’s most primitive dog breed descended from the extinct Japanese Wolf. He’s brave but cautious, so much fun and likes to play hard. Other times he’s soft and acts precious like a cat. A totally fascinating breed with great beauty. I love him 😍

Where do you get all your ‘’facts’’ from lady, the shiba is the most primitive dog breed in the world since theyre DNA is the closest to the wolf, it’s on National Geographic’s website. Although there’s not a big difference between a shiba and a Shikoku, showing us your sources of info would be nice

The way the owner plays with her dog clearly has an impact on his behaviour. Throughout the video when we see them playing, and she’s always holding the toy up high and rewarding him when he jumps. That’s probably a large part of why he jumps on strangers, he wants to play and that’s how he plays because she introduced that kind of behaviour. Even if she tried training him not to jump, she’d need to stop having him jump in play time because it’s rewarding that behaviour. He’s clearly a very playful, very sweet dog who wants to have fun with humans and let loose, but sadly roughhousing can lead to serious injuries.

100% agree with you! It’s just that initial greeting where they’re cautious of others and then after that are incredibly warm. I kind of think they’re quite human like in that respect (what human wants to be rushed up to and touched on the head when you first meet them anyway?). I’ve found actually all the people who are scared of dogs or who genuinely aren’t bothered, Kiyo seems to love the best as they give him the space he needs. He’s also so respectful of their space too and really gentle with them which I love as he can adapt to the person. My mum and sister in law are really scared of dogs but love Kiyo as he is really calm and gentle around them without anyone having to tell him to be. But at the same time if someone wants to play rough with him and roll around on the floor like Anneka was doing, well he loves that too.

Once upon a time, many wolves lived in Japan. Of course there were many dogs. In old Japan, dogs were free-range. Therefore, it is said that dogs and wolves were naturally mated. The ancestors of Shikoku dogs are said to have been born by mating the wolf and the dog. Alternatively, it is said that hunters mated wolves and dogs to create excellent hounds.

Here’s an article I found explaining their involvement in relation to the Eurasier as I didn’t do a great job explaining: ‘The German Spitz is a type, not a breed, of spitz-type dogs from Germany. In the modern day, the German Spitz is considered a single breed, there are five varieties based on size and colour: the Wolfspitz or Keeshond, the Giant Spitz or Großspitz, the Medium Spitz or Mittelspitz, the Miniature Spitz or Kleinspitz and the Pomeranian or Zwergspitz. My Greek Harehound has a Shikoku female girlfriend who refuses to play with nearly any other dog except for him. So her boss is extremely happy they can play on the field. She once almost took on a pitbull female that was catching his eye. I found that other primitive dogbreeds like harehounds, greyhounds/whippets and huskies work better together in the field than more traditionally bred housedogs. I’m Japanese. Shikoku is written as 四国, meaning four prefectures. It happens to be an island but the translation meaning is “four worlds”. The first word Shi (四) means four actually and Shikoku includes four prefectures of Ehime, Kochi, Tokushima and Kagawa prefectures in southern Japan. This is not a popular everyday breed and not many people own this breed actually outside of these prefectures in Japan. I just hope westerners don’t get these dogs for fun like so many westerners do especially when people are not willing to walk a few hours a day minimum especially for this breed. And this dog is not meant for people with weak muscles or obese people who can barely walk or run for miles as they pull very hard even if they’re trained (they’re really strong muscular dogs). Also it’s not the type of dog to be kept in a home. But you would need a large property where they can be by themselves as it’s an independent dog. I really dislike westerners get these ancient Japanese dogs like a mascot or decoration of sorts and trap in a home. And I’ve seen too many complain they can’t be trained... They can actually be trained but not by most pet owners. You need to be a very experienced dog owner who have had experience with other Japanese dogs perhaps hunting breeds like Akita but it’s even harder to train than Akita as this dog is determined and very independent. Btw, most Japanese dogs actually are kept in a backyard of a home in suburbs (for Shiba) or for other larger breeds in a farm house backyard in rural country side. I do hope people don’t get these dogs living in the city in an apartment or something. It’s really absurd when some people get Akita living in an apartment (I’ve seen them actually kept in an apartment…). That would be really cruel. These dogs are happy living in outside. No Japanese families keep these ancient dogs inside the home but backyard only with their own dog house and clean bowl of water. At night time they sleep in a dog house and they’re happy to be listening who is passing by and they would fearlessly protect your home as they are very loyal to owners. But they’re meant to be living in outside. Only in winter we provide warm blankets or heater or keep them inside like in garage/shed.

Thank you (as the owner of Kiyo) that’s very kind. I wouldn’t normally sit there and do nothing and let Kiyo react like that in the video and we live in the countryside where we don’t often see Frou frou dogs so I cringe when I watch the video but I’m also grateful people can see as his reaction I think is a true representation of how the breed can be (I.e. NOT a lab) so if it informs people to make decisions on whether or not to own the breed I’m 💯 happy.

Thank you (as the owner of kiyo) for pointing that out. He was extremely excited in this video and over threshold .. a teenager with balls in a new environment. We live in the countryside and barely see many people / dogs and we filmed in a place around strangers that was busy. I always have Kiyo on lead and under control if I’m not sure of the environment which causes frustration for him but that’s something I’m working on. Excited as you said yes, but under control. Every day we have to manage off lead dogs running at us or people trying to stroke him which is frustrating but Kiyo is always under control. At the beginning I used to be one of ‘those people’ with their dogs off lead and limited control shouting ‘it’s ok he’s friendly’ but I soon realised it’s irresponsible and rude.

Lovely dog, I am currently binge-watching this series. It is so interesting to learn more details about the different breeds, especially from people who live with them and who understand them best. I was quite surprised about the warning to not approach a Shikoku and just touch him. Who in his right mind would do that with any strange dog, any breed? You have no idea how competent the dog's guardian is, so that sounds like a perfect recipe to get bitten, sooner or later. Obviously you talk to the holder first, and ask if the fellow is friendly and likes to be touched ... no matter if it is a tiny Pomeranian or a huge Cane Corso.

Thank you for uploading the Japanese dog. Japanese dogs are thought to be difficult to keep, but that's because the way of training is different from other dogs. When you have a Japanese dog, you will notice that there are many different kinds of calls. It doesn't seem to have an expression, so it's actually rich. Japanese dogs can't move unless they are convinced. In order to convince you, you need to talk to your dog all the time. Sometimes you also need a strong tone. Please tell me that you shouldn't do what you can't do. Please discuss it instead of blaming it. Always talk to a lot of dogs. I'm sure I'll be the best partner in the world.

Shikoku are VERY different from Shiba Inu. I own both. They generally are not good housemates for Shiba Inu and require a rotate system. Check out North American Shikoku club there’s some good info on both breeds and how they can really be polar opposites.

It's a band breed in the UK unfortunately. It's a lot of dog unfortunately like a lot of breeds wrong people get their hands on them like the pit and sadly cane corsa which seems to be in fashion at the moment. Same happened with the rotty. Dobes neos. American bulldog.

You should look at Calupoh, it's a Mexican breed that supposedly has wolf blood in it and was developed in the 1990s. It's a beautiful black almost shepherd like dog. It's got piercing brown or amber eyes. Really stunning dog. I couldn't find much information over the internet most is in Spanish, which I don't speak. I still thought It would be interesting to check out. My mother is from Oaxaca Mexico, she knew a rich girl in Mexico, that had a calupo named Lobo. My mom said he was huge, black and had gorgeous eyes. She doesn't remember him being very vocal, but very intimidating when you first see one. She said Lobo liked her but would be standoffish with men.

Never get such a dog around children or people with severe medical issues. A crying baby or person having a seizure can trigger their prey drive and they will go for the neck. These dogs are not fully domesticated like other stable breeds are.
