The Sharp and Sardonic Wit of Kerr Avon | Blake's 7

RIP Paul Darrow
I couldn't make a Blake's 7 video without compiling some of the sharpest, driest, most sardonic pit downs from Kerr Avon, played by the wonderful late Paul Darrow.

The late, great Paul Darrow, delivering lines like every word is an assassination
No one could ever re-create Avon or Blakes 7. Arguably one of the best sci-fi shows ever made, Avon made every episode worth watching.

Such an amazing character played amazingly. The bane of modern TV you actually need smart writers to write smart characters. Terry Nation would no be writing TV today. A character is smart in modern TV, because others sit around and talk about them. Not because of clever things the characters says or does.

Blakes 7 has a special place in my heart, it is such a good show, and my favourites where Avon and Orac.
THE greatest television character of all time. Paul - we miss you. AVON LIVES!
Brilliant, thank you, so much of my youth. In a way two lost talents centrepiece here, Paul Darrow and Chris Boucher.
That last scene always really hits me right in the guts.

Yes, the last episode was fantastic. To anyone who hasn't watched it, avoid all spoilers and just watch it (after having watch all of the other episodes in their correct order, of course).
One of the best sci-fi characters ever.
45 years later and he _still_ holds your concentration and owns the room with his presence
Paul Darrow, absolute class.
The character writing in what lifted the show from a mundane sci-fi series into excellence. Not having a big budget, the hsow had to have engaging stories and interesting characters. At the time US shows were stuff like Buck Rogers; big on effects, small on stories and characters. The Liberator crew were very far from heroes - they were very flawed people, including Blake. But it's easy to see why Avon became the most popular and best known (alongside Servalan). Superbly realised by Paul Darrow, Avon was interesting because he was highly intelligent, but aloof and sarcastic - and utterly self-serving and untroubled by morality (which he considered illusory and worthy of contempt). It was a genius idea to write Avon as the absolute opposite of the idealistic and naive Blake, and to play off their rivalry. As shown here, Avon was just waiting for Blake's moral crusade to get mor eof his followers killed, they'd then abandon him and Avon could take over. He was just biding his time. Blake's leadership was based off his charisma and inspiring loyalty - Avon's was based on his intelligence and acceptance that he would most likely make the right decisions.

Avon greatest modern character. Clever people will say he is just Odysseus.
Its a testimony to hoe great an actor Paul Darrow was and the brilliant writing that we are still here over 40 years later talking about it.
Paul was so good man. I hung on every sentence as a kid. R.I.P the one and only forever Avon
R.I.P Paul, you legend. And thanks once again Spaced out for a brilliant video.
Avon was the textbook definition of The Magnificent Bastard
Avon was my role model back when I was young. However I never managed the sarcastic voice.

First class writing, and good acting too.
Rest in peace Paul, you were the best
I love Avon's face. He looked so sharp and fierce and calculating and scheming. He looked like a master Shakespearean actor.
"... one day that great big bleeding heart of his will get us all killed!" How right you were Avon.
To me, Blake's 7 is the best science fiction of all time. Like all long running shows, it had some bad episodes, but at it's best it was utterly superb.
*Avon is the man*
Avon is my Spirit Animal 😠🥰
If that Avon was calling I definitely wouldn't have been in, but Paul Darrow would have be welcome. The most fleshed out character in the show and well played.
Paul Darrow and Avon how can you not love him the anti hero hero ! a crying shame they never made a reboot during his time we could have watched Avon all day and no one else could ever match playing that character !

Tragically, Paul wanted to obtain rights to the show & had always wanted to take the show onto another level. He could see that B7 had potential in the States, with a lot of PSB generating new interest. Conventions over there were definitely giving him incentives to try a revival but sadly it never happened. If a reboot ever happened, I would be too concerned that budgets would be channelled into effects & good writing/acting would get pushed to the bottom of the priority list, rather like the Dr Who revival has proven

@@andrewphippsphillips1455 Best left as is, then. Especially given how the show ends, which is really the ultimate finale for us all.
10:12 The best scene in the whole show. Actual leadership.
Avon was THE MAN!
That iconic grin and accent ❤️😎👌
Their capacity alone for insults suggests to me that somewhere down the generations, an Avon married a Blackadder.
Love Avon! The only early thing missing is the exchange in Season 2 I think where Blake & Travis are on a planet dueling and everyone is watching and Avon goes to leave: "I have never understood why it should be necessary to do something irrational to prove that you care, nor why it should be necessary to prove it at all." In the final season there are few missed: Dana: "Do you ever get tired of always being right?" Avon: "No, only of everyone else being wrong." Or in the final episode: "The fire was stupid, leaving Villa on guard was suicidal. What's the matter? Is staying alive too difficult for you? Or Villa: "One of these days we're gonna go down in one of these holes and never come out." Avon: Sooner or later, everyone does that." But my favorite moment of all time is the twist in Moloch when Avon is like "Dammit, what weighs 70 kilos!" and Orac points out: "Villa weighs 73 kilos." The look that comes over him, the realization of what must be done, the acting is stellar!

Paul Darrow was a terrific actor. The combination of spot on enunciation plus his piercing and unblinking stare were in a class of their own. Best character by a country mile.

I very much appreciate this sampling of Avon's dialog. He was given some very creative material and Paul Darrow certainly delivered it with panache. :) You have chosen some wonderful highlights.
That last scene is so good still. End of an era good.
What a great character. The scriptwriters must absolutely have relished writing for him.
Still recall the way I felt watching that final episode. No internet or spoiler-happy media to give away the secret, we were all just sitting there thinking "it's getting a bit close to the end of the episode so how are they going to....oh hell". There's a lot to be said for not knowing what's coming.
I was 11 when this came out and didn't really understand it. But I fancied Avon. But even at that tender age I knew he was not a gentleman!

(ring - ring) "Hello; Avon calling!" as a blaster is pointed at you. My old boss was a lot like him...he could dress you down without insulting you, and you would love him for it.
Some great one liners , Paul Darrow made Avon one of the most memorable characters of British television . It would have been appropriate to change the later series to Avon calling - ironically Blake proved his eventual downfall .
That video made my night. Thank you for putting it together!
Still one of the best show endings ever made.

Avon: "You also talk too much". Tarrant: "Be thankful I'm restricting myself to talk". Avon: "Well now, thats fascinating, you mean you can do something else?" In a battle of wits/war of words between Avon & Tarrant, I think there was always ever going to be one overwhelming favourite/one eventual winner. And that was the resident B7 computer expert.

In the original version of Series 3 Tarrant was conceptualised as a double-agent for the Federation and would've betrayed them in the finale - I feel like a lot of the antagonism between Tarrant & Avon would've come to a head with that original idea concept. It'd have been most satisfying for Avon to clip him it'd have come to pass.

Avon and blake are such a cute couple…
Paul would have been a brilliant James Bond if they were faithful to the character as per the original books. Bets "true" adaptation was the Daily Express daily strip- if you ever get the chance to read it just imagine him as Bond...perfect.
Imagine if Avon and Servalan become a couple like BONNIE AND CLYDE in a on the run series. That would be a great show.

If you can find Fools Trust by Ros Williams in Horizon 13 fanfiction, it has this theme. Spoiler After becoming President, Blake marries Cally. But the others are outlawed as they are, after all, criminals .! Even Jenna: after using her skills to clean up some pirates and restore Earth security, Blake tells her all he can do for her is let her run away and naturally, she is enraged. Servalan, too, is on the run and she replaces Jenna as Liberators pilot...we forget she is a trained pilot, don't we... And moves into Avon's bed. It's a good one
Loved it..should have lasted longer❤
8:14 What I would give to watch a comversation between Garak (Deep Space Nine) and Avon.
I like the episode where Avon is put into an escape capsule with Orac, he crashes on a beach somewhere, he's doing his best at acting, then if you look carefully you can see a bloke walking his dog on a clifftop.

I wish they would have included the clip where someone is shot in another scene. Then they cut back to the ship and someone says the shot character's name and Avon says "Who ???" in a cold manner.
