The Shame of BBC TV Licensing

Make no mistake -- the BBC will NOT like this video. It is high time that the BBC stood on it's own feet instead of extorting £150 annually from every household in the UK. In this video we discuss some of the reasons why the BBC's TV Licensing must be abolished.
The BBC would have you believe that TV Licence "evasion" is extremely low, and that 97% of us watch TV as it is being broadcast over the airwaves. Of course, this is typical BBC propaganda. The reality is that an unprecedented number of people are refusing to buy a TV Licence - simply because they don't need one. We are moving into an age where people no longer feel the need to watch TV as it is being broadcast. The days when families would all gather around the TV every night are long gone Catch-up TV is fast becoming the norm and the BBC clearly don't like it because a TV License is not required for watching catch-up TV on the internet. The consequence for the BBC is that their TV Licensing business model -- IE: extorting money from UK households -- is unsustainable in the 21st century. The whole thing has already become untenable and it is only a matter of time before the BBC comes crashing down due to the sheer number of people who no longer need a TV Licence.
The BBC is a profit-making corporation masquerading as an essential public service in order to obtain funds from the public purse. Long gone are the days when the BBC was a necessity for providing information, education and entertainment. The BBC seems to think it is still 1954. However the BBC is not as important today as it likes to think it is. There are now a multitude of ways to get information, education and entertainment in the home -- including KZread, Netflix, games consoles, and more TV and radio channels than you can shake a stick at. The BBC has become irrelevant and unnecessary in this day and age. The only way it can possibly continue in the 21st century is to abolish the TV Licence and fund itself through subscription, sales and advertising revenue. The BBC already makes around £2 billion a year from selling content worldwide so they're well used to operating in the commercial arena. Until the BBC finally grows up, it will continue to operate as an extortion racket whilst wasting our money on lavish lifestyles, paedophile entertainers, executive pay-offs, and gagging orders for ex-employees. I am not a fan of any mainstream media, but at least other media companies, like Sky and ITV, have to survive in the real world - they have to raise their own funds in the marketplace, they are accountable when they get things wrong, and in times of recession they have to make cut-backs and downsize. Whereas the BBC survives on money extorted from the public, so it has no accountability whatsoever, plus their corporation is recession-proof because they continue to get the same amount of money regardless of the state of the economy.
In short, the BBC, in its current form, has had its day. The only way they can salvage any public trust or respectability is to grow up and stand on its own feet for once in its life. Maybe then we'll see an end to their arrogance, snobbery and blatant disregard for public opinion. Or maybe not, but at least we won't have to pay for it!
A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this video. :)

You have to PAY to watch over-the-air TV content in the UK? I've only recently found out that is a reality for peoples in UK (and has been been for some time). what a shocking revelation!!! I am a Canadian, whom of which has never been subjected to any kind of FEE to watch any kind of public, over-the-air broadcast television service. I wouldn't DREAM of paying extra monies in the form a fee to watch a state sponsored television programming... That being said ... I have found many BBC programs to be what I would consider as "high quality" but still.... 145 pounds a year?!?!?! That is a disgustingly high cost, no wonder there is so much rhetoric on this topic.

This crap would never fly in Canada. We pay a cable or satellite provider if we wish to have tv or internet. But if we just own the tv to watch dvd's or play games no one can charge you a cent. We can also use an antenna to get programing free on a couple of publicly broadcast channels. If someone ever came to my door to try to collect money they would be unceremoniously booted from the property and charged with trespassing. I can't believe this stuff goes on in the UK... If a company wants to make money they should adopt the same system we have in north america and be done with it. Charge for a service rendered instead of an implied service just for owning a piece of electronic gear.

And what makes me angry people have gone to prison for not paying a licence fee and made to look like a criminal . For a crap TV station might been good back in the day but now its a washed up channel that wouldn't survive if it wasn't for licence fee.

In the 80s They said we had to have a licence because not only did our old analogue T.Vs receive signal but they broadcast a signal too so we needed a broadcasters licence. Digital T.Vs don't work the same and we no longer broadcast through analogue,we receive in digital.Technically we shouldn't pay it according to their OWN Rule.

Why is it that we need a licence for BBC nothing they air is of great interest to me. The licence is a joke, i believe in the entire world there is only one other country that charges this fee. Why is the BBC self regulated, this is also a joke, why are their tv detector vans at all, this is a waste of money. The BBC licence fee should be banned immediately but this is a clear example of how little say the British people have in the way this country is run, if this was put to a referendum it would be voted to be abolished straight away so why is it we are still supposed to pay, the fact that they can ask the police to get involved in this is also a joke when the BBC seem most complicit in the recent pedophile issues. When are the people of this country going to get the backbone and say ENOUGH I WILL NOT PAY AND I WILL HAVE THE LAW CHANGED. Its time to take action against the BBC not just say go away but take affirmative action to change the law. This should be in the European court and explained WHY IT IS WRONG to pay for this licence. UK court only to happy to let this run on and on and on. We need to fight this and fight it NOW.

There is more that could be in this video. 1. Now that the UK have gone digital, if the putrid BBC really offered value for money they should become a subscription channel. Parliament should force them to do so immediately - not in twenty years - ensuring that a years subscription was no more than the license fee. I cannot forget - years ago - seeing the prime minister stand up in Parliament and actually say "I see no reason why we should change the TV licensing system for the time-being". Grr! 2. Destroying lives. Because my job requires a criminal records check I cannot afford to have any risk the TV-Licensing arm criminalise me in any way shape or form (for a civil matter of non payment of fine for ALLEGED viewing without payment simply for owning equipment invested in). So I have ALWAYS paid. However, morally, it IS criminal that I fund such a diabolical and unrepresentative corpse and I am ashamed of doing so. How mad is that? 3. Obfuscation. The advertisements reminding us to pay our license now tell us that the fee does not just pay for the BBC. Further they tell us we should pay if we receive LIVE streamed content from anywhere AND non-live BBC iplayer content too. So in short if you own a mobile or a computer you WILL WORRY about being hounded and criminalised! Your activities can be monitored, how could you be sure you are always in the clear? 4. Expensive. For people on a low income the fee is HUGE. If you are unlucky enough to find yourself between jobs you would find it exceeded 2 weeks benefits. Imagine the ridiculous situation of applying for a job with a criminal check and having pay your next fortnights survival fund for a luxury - or risk being criminalized! What kind of sick system is that?

Bit difficult to comment on just exactly what the Brits are prepared to put up with. How on earth can a TV station become an intimidating force in a civilized society?? I can only put the incredable fact down to the English sense of class system, that kind of, 'its only right to do as your told' by the upper class, Havent they heard of the ideal that TV stations compeat with each other to get you to watch them?. I dont watch TV at all so this is only an observation folks.

the govenors of the bbc who are suppose to guide them are all ex politicians and there corporate friends ,they actually got a law passed that made it illegal to watch programs as they are shown ie: live tv they send round the heavies and the police and you can go to prison for not paying it , But people are waking up to this crap by the thousands and are refusing to pay it so the government are going to decriminalise it eventually but as far as im concerned they can all get fucked

My suggestions for BBC Reform: 1) Keep BBC One and BBC Two. Move the majority of BBC Three and BBC Four programming to BBC Two (they just show repeats now for most of their schedule anyway). This means you can close BBC Three and Four easily. Since both Three and Four only currently operate from 7pm to around 4am, this would not prove to be a big loss. 2) Put content for younger people, young adults on the BBC iPlayer to supplement the BBC THree programming moving to BBC Two. Also increase online content for all other genres which the BBC covers. Online is where television is going, so make the most of the iPlayer technology. 3) Merge CBBC and Cbeebies into one 24 hour channel with 12 hours each dedicated to each age category. 4) Cut back on the amount of pages and content on the BBC website. It is vast and costs too much. 5) BBC News and BBC Parliament to remain, but reduce the amount of money spent on them. Bring in savings and reduce staff in the news division. 6) Reduction in the number of management posts which are not needed and are costing too much. Reduce all salaries of top management and channel heads. 7) Reduce talent fees. Have a cap on the amount big stars can earn from the BBC. 8) Launch a subscription service for certain BBC content. For example allow free 7 day catch up on the iPlayer. However after seven days, if anyone wants to watch a programme then they have to pay a minimal fee per programme per day. 9) Cut back on the excess amount of staff and resources used in the BBC regions, including BBC local radio which has a huge power over independent local radio. 10) Finally have a wholescale review on cost savings, and job cuts which will slim down the BBC as a whole. Just my suggestions on what could be done to help the BBC survive.

TV is short for television, Which is really short for television receiver, Note the " receiver " part, It`s receives the broadcast signals and converts that into sound and pictures, It gives off no signal in itself, It`s not a transceiver, So the so called " Detector vans " Are a complete con, A bucket of diamonds they were empty, With just a glorified coat hanger stuck on the roof

Whilst the detector vans were a complete con it is nonsense to suggest a TV set doesn't give off signals.

UK = Forced to pay 150 pound a year to watch TV or you are considered a criminal If you dont pay you are harrassed and threatened. Eventually they may come to you house and sieze assets to auction to pay a fine of up to 1000 pounds USA = Forced to pay $300-1200 a MONTH for heath insurance that you may not want or need or you are considered a criminal. If you don't buy your own insurance because you don't want it, don't need it, or more likely can't afford it then you are fined by the federal government through taxes. Which is worse?

I was once issued with a formal caution by a TV licensing officer on the doorstep for a TV that I didn’t own in a house that wasn’t mine (I was staying at a friends house) and for which actually had a licence - I just didn’t know where it was because it wasn’t mine and my friend was out at the shop. It was confirmed in writing and I never had an apology.

As for the BBC advertising!!! They have been using the practice of product placement for years! They started using product placement in their crappy programs around the time the true figures of (people not paying the TV licence (lawfully) were made known to them (but not to us, (the public). And its more then 7,000 lol.

If the BBC was so sure of the quality of their output then why are they so afraid of people having a choice to pay (or not). Simply introduce a set top box + decoder card issued to every fee payer and leave the rest of us alone. I am currently "under investigation", which is hilarious as I don't have a TV aerial, sky dish or cable connection and only have a TV connected to a DVD player and PS4. I figure that all the money they waste on the pointless investigation is money out of the profits of Capita and the BBC :) The letters are designed to scare vulnerable people. Lucky for me I know that I don't need a TV licence :)

Whether you watch TV or not REFUSE to pay a licence. They have no power. They can't get into your house unless you let them in. If you see them outside or hear them on the intercom do not answer the door and double lock the door. I get letters every month and I just bin them. The letters are automated empty threats.
