Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
A girl's best friend
If I didn't have my sewing machine
I'd a come to no good end
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And wheel the wheel by day
So by night I feel so weary that I never get out to play
Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
A friend in need
If I didn't having my sewing machine
A wicked life I'd lead
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And dream about romance
So by night I feel so weary that I never get out to dance
Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
Me pride and joy
If I didn't having me sewing machine
I'd a married James McCoy
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And that's the end of Jim
'Cause by night I get so weary I don't even look good to him

omg she was brilliant like Lucy in this. Such energy and physical humor. Bravo!
I have always loved this song and Betty Hutton. Being a sewing teacher it is one I have told my students about for years. It's great to find it here and I am forwarding it to all my Sewing Buddies!! Thanks!
My aunt used to sing this to me when I was very little. It used to make me laugh. I'd forgot all about it until now when it all came back to me 40 years later. Now get this... In 1974 I started work for Courtholds the clothing makers as a trainee engineer. And In 1990 I started my own Industrial Sewing Machine supply and service business and i'm still at it.
This clip is a GEM! Don't think I ever saw "Perils of Pauline", but have seen this clip numerous times and figure it must have been in a tribute documentary or compilation. Betty was BRILLIANT and so expressive. Frank Faylen also Brilliant as the hard boss. Particularly loved the outdated slang used. Funny, I had forgotten about the term 'talking through your hat', but my Dad often used it. Thanks for posting this great clip.
This is from The Perils of Pauline, not a very famous musical , but some memorable song
I’ve literally never heard of the song or the artist, but I love it so much! Essentially when I just started using a sewing machine
They said you had to see her live, she had the energy and performance skills of a true vaudevillian!
I saw "The Perils of Pauline" with my mother at Fairy Air Dome in St. Louis in 1947. The Fairy Air Dome was folding chairs and a portable movie screen in the back yard of the Fairy Theatre on Easton Avenue. People who lived in the flats around the theater watched the movie for free from their porches. When rain started, we moved inside and the film was being shown at the same spot as it was being shown outside. Hutton was terrific. I was seven years old and still remember this flick.
That's my Model 31-15 that Betty's working at! Or it could be... cool to see a workroom set up from the day... my machine is dated 1927. Still sews a very pretty stitch. I use it exclusively for quilting work.
I forgot all about this song of hers. Thank you so much for posting it up here. What a gal!!!!
This is soooo cool! They don't make 'em like this any more!!!
i so wish they would do a remaster of this!! i bought this when i was little(no idea why) and still love it!!
i have two sewing machines. a brother LS 590 and a singer merritt 3343c. I got my merritt in a thrift stores. it was made back in the 90's and i bought it two weeks after my LS 590. I love them both. I now have to memorize this song and sing it.. lol
My grandfather used to sing this song to tease my mother, but I'd never heard the original. Thanks for posting this.
I have love this song since I was a kid, also loved Betty Hutton.
I ADORE her peepin's litle eyes over the sewing machine at 1:12! It's so perfect!
oh i love this song.. as an owner of the of several vintage sewing machines this is awesome.
I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Wow that was pretty cool! Thank you so much for posting this... I will make sure to embed this into my Quilting Blog. It's a reminder, that sewing is and hasn't been a blessing to all of us and wasn't always a pleasure.

Great song, I have never heard it before, now I will have to sing it every time I'm sewing! And change the words to knitting machine when I use that.
i love this film xx
She sings, she dances, she's the female version of Danny Kaye (read--comic genius), boisterous, kooky, glamours--did it all, Betty did.
I love it! I especially like her outfit. XD
This a fun song and sung with much energy just great!

It was in a HBO special called "The Hollywood Clowns" from 1979. That's where I first saw this clip as well.
Yes, it's my best friend! Funny! Is that why I don't go to clubs? Oh man! I'm always sewing!

yeeeeuh
i'm still trying to find the bad words. there's no swearing, there aren't any suggestions. if u're worried about the "bobbin' and bobbin'" part, that's a part of a sewing machine. so i don't know what u r talking about
This clip was featured in an old HBO Movie retrospective, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it. Anyone have any idea?
I love this! Where can I watch the full movie!?

my grandma LOVES this song. She used t sing it to me when I was a little girl. I like the last part, but i wish it was also in the discription. :( "I have a boss, he looks like a horse. His names ____ _____ ." what was the one i'll kick him where it hurts?
Anyone know what this movie is?

He should have called her into his office and made sexual advances towards her like a real boss.
